Hopefully you'll have found your way here.

Here's a new race list list, feel free to add to it:

Playtex Moonwalk: 20 May, JoPG, Posey
British 10K: 2nd July, Crunchie, Titchy
RFL Newbury: 2nd July, Twink, Mini Twink, Twink's mum
RFL July: Dingle

Too late for me tonight but I'll post some 5k & 10k training ideas here soon.

I have also been lurking here in awe (great turn of phrase, moondog!) and am feeling inspired. Have been on-off runner for around 5 years. Had ds 14 wks ago and ran (3-4 miles, 3x per week) until I was around 4mths pg. Went out when ds was 5wks and flobbed around for 15 mins or so, intending to build up gradually but have been plagued by various bodily defects e.g. broken toe, chest infection, since then so runs have been sporadic. Twink, your three goals are a great idea, so am going to book myself for some 10Ks in summer and get my bum in gear!! THanks everyone!

JoPG · 28/05/2006 17:44

Had a great day today. DS1 (age 4) and I took part in a 3k fun run in Danson Park. He was excellent and is very proud of his first medal. He also ran all the way and finished in 20 minutes, which I thought was pretty good for a 4 year old. DH then took part in the 10k. It was a great course and easy to see the runners at a number of points, so everyone had a fab morning.
I must go out for a bit of a longer one tomorrow though, hopefully the rain will hold off.

busywizzy · 29/05/2006 08:51

Jo, that's a great result for such a little boy - I bet you were really proud.

I'll be taking a break from here for a week or two as I've done some serious damage to my knee. Could hardly walk on Saturday so I'm seeing a physio this week. It feels a bit better today as I've been resting it as much as I can (what a bore our Bank Holiday has been) so I'll have to wait and see what she says.

My RFL is in four weeks so hopefully I'll be back running again soon as amazingly, I'm quite missing it Shock

Good time Twink about the three goals. At the moment mine are -

  1. Walk the RFL
  2. Jog some of the RFL
  3. Jog all of it and I don't care about the time Grin
busywizzy · 29/05/2006 08:52

I meant good advice Twink Smile

Pidge · 29/05/2006 21:31

Busy - sorry about your knee - hope you are on the mend soon. Don't rush into running too quickly - rest is the best thing, followed by some GENTLE pottering along!

Jopg - am soooooooooooooo impressed. My dd is nearly 4 and although she's an enthusiastic dasher about, there's no way she'd run more than 100m without stopping to admire the pavement / flowers / clouds / etc. And 20mins is some going. Well done him.

I managed 9.5 miles yesterday which is my longest ever run. I was a bit worried because my knees were a bit stiff and sore afterwards, but today I feel great.

quanglewangle · 29/05/2006 23:43

Well, Busy, hope the knee starts to cooperate with you again soon.
I have scuppered my training for at least a week. I fell while carrying a heavy plant pot - my foot was caught in a hole so was twisted badly and it is now one huge swollen bruise. I don't exaggerate.

It isn't broken but I can't bend it or even walk properly.

So, oh wise ones, how can I maintain my fitness this week until I can run again. I have just joined a gym so what machines would you recommend? Do you think swimming is any good? I could do 5Km before this and don't want to end up back at square one again.

Pidge · 30/05/2006 13:19

quanglewangle - in my experience when I've had a break from running, you don't lose all that fitness very fast - sometimes I've had 3 weeks with no running at all, and although the first outing can be a bit hard work, I've been able to ramp back up to my previous level pretty quickly.

Swimming is GREAT exercise, and non-weight bearing, so perfect for a dodgy ankle. Maybe cycling would be ok a bit later on - once your ankle can take weight well, but before you really want to do high-impact stuff. Don't know about gym stuff - not being a gym girl myself. But could you ask a member of staff for some ideas?

leogaela · 30/05/2006 16:52

Oh, this is a busy thread :), great to know so many of us are keen to be fit and healthy!

Quanglewangle - I have a Polar heartrate monitor which I am very happy with. The strange readings may be because the watch is picking up interference from somewhere - overhead powercable, railtracks. Even if you don't still have the receipt maybe the company that makes the watch have a website that may help you work out if it really isn't working or if its something else.

Titchy - I LOVE running in the rain! I did 1hr10mins yesterday in heavy rain. It makes me feel so good - a little bit mad like I am doing something that (almost) noone else would do, and really out there on my own. And there is somethign so refreshing about running in the damp air, feeling wet and cold and coming home into a nice warm shower, mmmmm! I do wear a baseball cap so it doesn't all dribble in my eyes though - I hate that! :)!

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 30/05/2006 17:20

I like the rain too - as long as it's not windy with it!

Not done my long run this weekend as I'm off up Snowdon on Thursday. Hoping for a clear day so I can be rewarded with a bit of a view Smile

quanglewangle · 30/05/2006 18:06

Thanks pidge, that's very reassuring. I went to the gym today and found I could do everything except the treadmill and anything that involved bending my foot. It is my foot not my ankle that I've wrecked. Not very strenuous but better than nothing. It shouldn't take too long for the bruising and and swelling to go down, but it is quite dramatic - it covers the whole of my foot.

leogaela, the Polar heart rate monitor seems to be widely used. I'll try changing the battery in mine to see if that makes any difference. Don't think the watch is working at all at the moment for heart rate. Maybe it loses it's marbles for a low signal and now it is too weak to be picked up at all, though the machines in the gym pick it up.

Well I must go and put my foot up now and be waited on hand and foot. Well, I can live in hope.....

titchy · 31/05/2006 13:46

Leogaela you're mad!!!!! a bit of light drizzle is lovely but positively peeing it down is something else! It doesn't help that my long sleeved top doesn't wick away moisture (and seems a bit solli buying along sleeved top this time of year!) so I end up looking as if someone had thrown a bucket or two of water over me - and several punds heavier.

However after two or three weeks of very little activity I committed myself to a 10k route - my longest route, normally I do 2 shorter circuits,, which was quite brave. and I ran the lot in 1 hour 5 mins so not too bad. Would like to knock 2 or 3 mins off that for the British 10k though.

still haven;t managed to do another 10 mile run yet, though will try an 8 miler this weekend, and a short fast tomorrow - might do some short intervals as Twink suggests (yuck!).

JoPG - very impressed with your 4 year old! Will we see him in an RfL next year?????

Can't believe only 4 weeks till next race!

busywizzy · 31/05/2006 18:53

Oh dear. Physio thinks I may (worst case scenario) have damaged the cartlidge in my knee and has told me to see my GP to get a referral to an orthopaedic surgeon for an MRI scan Sad She said hopefully the damage isn't too bad to need an operation just yet Shock Shock Shock OMG, I thought I'd just got old joints.

No running for me for a while Sad

Leo, agree with Titchy that you're bonkers. I don't mind running in a bit of drizzle as I find it very cooling, but heavy rain - no way!!!

Pidge · 31/05/2006 21:30

Oh Busy - such bad news Sad. Hope it's not as bad as you fear and they can get you sorted out soon. Meanwhile - just take it easy.

Last night I was out with my club and we did a woodland run. Quite entertaining - skipping the muddy puddles, and galloping over tree trunks in the fading light. And it didn't feel like running in London at all.

paddingtonbear1 · 01/06/2006 11:08

busy I sympathise :(
I think I may also have damaged my left knee - am going to see the GP next week. I've not done any running to speak of since the FLM, but the knee is still worse again this week!
crossed fingers for us both...

crunchie · 04/06/2006 20:06

Well I finally got out again today. I was feeling really bad I hadn't run all week!! I did 52 minutes (so about 6 miles ish) and felt great for most of it - lots of hills so great practice. I have 4 weeks until my race so I need to get comfortable with this distance. 30 mins is no problem so a few longers runs over teh next few weeks and I'll be set :)

quanglewangle · 04/06/2006 23:31

Foot still sore. Walking still hurts so definitley can't run for a while.
At this rate I'll be walking the 5Km. No one will believe that I could do 7Km (on the treadmill). It just doesn't fit in with my image.

Dannie · 06/06/2006 22:28

Help! You guys have been really helpful with small questions in the past, but I've got a real problem: my motivation's gone! I probably put it down somewhere and DS2 hid it Grin
I did a major fundraising half marathon in March and I put a lot into that, which may be why I feel a bit flat, but I don't want to waste all that training and I don't know how to get myself out again. I can't believe that I trekked for miles in the dark and sleet and now I can't drag myself round the block in the sunshine.

crunchie · 07/06/2006 13:08

Dannie I know what you mean, sometimes it is really hard. But the only thing that motivates me is another race. After that I lose the will as I am not trying to do anything. Are there any 10km coming up near you? I have found this is a good distance, you need to train, but isn't a killer. I am doing the 'Great British Run' in London on 2nd July, but I need to find another one for Sept/Oct time to keep me going!!

chapsmum · 07/06/2006 13:13

sorry I have been way for ages. but was at \link{http://www.aceraces.co.uk/wildernessarc/index.html\this} last week. highly reccommened some adventure racing for all of you fell runners out there!!
I am so motivated, have been out road running nearly every night since I got back and that is sooooo not like me!

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 07/06/2006 13:14

Crunchie - there are usually some Cancer Research 10k's in the early Autumn - the venues are stately homes around the country so the views are always nice. I'm doing either Tatton Park or Weston Park. You can register your interest on the website and they'll e-mail you the details when they're finalised.

Dannie - my motivation at the moment is to keep the dreaded middle-age spread at bay and nothing more. The site of me in my underwear is enough to get anyone running away at speed Shock

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 07/06/2006 13:18

Were you competing chaps or dishing out the Vaseline?

I climbed Snowdon last week - up and down in less than 4 1/2 hours. The down was really hard on my knees.

chapsmum · 07/06/2006 13:24

metanium actually!
did some paddling some cycling and some rescuing!
have competed in a three day one but am so not fit enough for 5 days.
May do a 2 day one in sept.

crunchie · 07/06/2006 13:24

Sagger, I just want something local :) I am contacting my local running team to find out what they do as they seem to have loads of 5 and 6 milke and 10kn off orad and road races, sometimes ended up in pubs!! I like the sound of that!

chapsmum · 07/06/2006 13:24

did you use poles?

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 07/06/2006 13:41

No - I left them in the car - along with the sunblock. My nose was sooooo red!

I'd never been up before and dh led me to believe it was little more than a steady uphill walk. Well the tourist path might be but that wasn't the one he took me up! He also dragged me along a 10 mile yomp the next day which didn't help. I can't imagine doing anything over 3 days never mind 5!
