Hopefully you'll have found your way here.

Here's a new race list list, feel free to add to it:

Playtex Moonwalk: 20 May, JoPG, Posey
British 10K: 2nd July, Crunchie, Titchy
RFL Newbury: 2nd July, Twink, Mini Twink, Twink's mum

Too late for me tonight but I'll post some 5k & 10k training ideas here soon.

Busy, are you going to add yours to the list?

Does anyone have access to the training plans on the runner's world website?

crunchie · 10/05/2006 10:44

Pidge, doubt it measures woods in teh country!!

I did a measured run this morning, checked it in the car for 3 miles, but Once out there I realsied it wasn't quite. But I ran it in 10:09 pace so I was happy - although I felt like I was dying at the end.

I have realised this is quite a fast pace already, so extending the length of the runs is most important, this weekend I must do a 40 minute run. I am finding that around 20 mins in I struggle for at least 5 minutes!!

Pidge · 10/05/2006 13:00

crunchie - hmmm maybe not! Although they do measure the tracks within our local park, which is handy.

Leo - I don't have members access to runners world. Some of their training plans are open to the public anyway. I found a half-mara one that looked reasonable for around the 2hour target time.

Am looking at some of the summer 10ks to aim for. Will add my most likely target to your list.

JoPG · 10/05/2006 16:01

Windsor Half marathon sounds interesting Pidge. I might even join you on that one.

Pidge · 10/05/2006 16:29

OOh yes, go for it JoPG. A colleage at work did it two years ago and said it was fun. My only concern is that it's reputedly hilly. Now I'm not sure what 'hilly' really means. I come from mid-Wales and there are some serious hills there. But frankly when I'm running even little slopes can be a killer.

Anyway - it looks like fun, and I'm hoping to persuade dp and the kids to come along and have a picnic whilst I run.

mummydear · 10/05/2006 19:29

Haven't got my act together yet about races for the next few months but Windsor Half marathon has been on my mind , may partake in that one !!

Was down for a RFL in July but my Dad has arranged a family get togther so might miss out on the run unless I can change the venue.

lapsedrunner · 10/05/2006 19:35

I used to live in Windsor and have run the Half Marathon, it's not "hilly" in the Welsh sense but is undulating. The worst bit is actually the first mile which is all gently uphill Grin(it starts on the "Long Walk").

Pidge · 10/05/2006 20:50

lapsedrunner - that is very good to hear! I'd heard the same thing about the start. Still, at least it discourages you from haring off at top speed, which is always a temptation. It will be my first half marathon, so am quite excited, even if it is 4 months away.

busywizzy · 11/05/2006 13:25

Have been inspired by all you runners recently and once I have done RFL in June, I'm going to try and build to 10K - how many miles is that?

Pidge · 11/05/2006 13:27

BW - it's 6.2 miles. I found it a brilliant distance - long enough to make you feel you'd really done something and hence very proud of yourself, but short enough that I didn't have to fit in any special training, I was just doing 2 runs per week before mine.

busywizzy · 11/05/2006 13:35

Thanks Pidge. Surprisingly, that doesn't sound unachievable to me any longer. I'm going to build to 5 miles first after my RFL as that's twice round my village and I can dalmost do once now. Once doing that comfortably, I'm going to aim for 10K (sounds more impressive than 6.2 miles Wink ) Just need to work out my route so I'm not running a centimetre more Grin

Pidge · 11/05/2006 13:36

If you think that 6.2 miles is half a half marathon, or a quarter of a marathon suddenly that begins to sound impressive to me!

busywizzy · 12/05/2006 13:55

Oh Pidge, I like that - half a half marathon Grin That's really inspired me.

Dingle · 12/05/2006 14:03

Due to train again tonight, must get a plan sorted!!Blush

crunchie · 12/05/2006 15:19

Hopefully I will managed 40 - 45 minutes this weekend. I am finding my weekday runs getting easier, although simply becasue I am recovering easier.

busywizzy · 13/05/2006 19:59

I did my Race for Life training this afternoon with the other mums from DD's school who I'll be running the race with. Our instructor had us practising sprint finishes (like that's going to happen after 5K) and after an hour of running as fast as I could (so not very fast really) every bit of me aches. Off to have a nice hot bubble bath and hopefully, I'll be feeling up to actually doing a run tomorrow.

My fun run (2.5 miles) is next Sunday and I want to get in at least two more runs before then and I'm away for most of the week. Going to a really fancy spa hotel so I'll be packing my trainers to take advantage of the running machines in the gym.

Pidge · 14/05/2006 21:06

Busy - very jealous of the fancy spa hotel - could really do with one of those!

Decided tonight to make my Sunday 'long' run a 'short' one, so 45 minutes of running, but I did include a hill to make it a bit more arduous. Anyway, my legs were so stiff, virtually all the way round. The rest of me was fine, I wasn't puffing or panting, my heart wasn't beating fast, just my legs felt like they were made of wood. Don't know why that happens sometimes. But I made it round at least.

crunchie · 14/05/2006 21:36

I managed 42 mins on Saturday - but I was puffing and panting and snorting and gasping etc etc. FWIW there are a good few hills in my local woods, I'ts not called Hillhouse wood for nothing!! Actually there are no flat bits at all, you are either going up or going down, only the first 3/4 mile and last 3/4 mile are what I would class as flat THANK GOD!!

I now need to find a run that is about 8 minutes longer, so next weekend. I guess round the woods 2.5 times and out at the bottom of the village, which means a NICE LONG HILL at the end of 40 minutes of running :)

No wonder last time I did a 10K run I found it remarkably easy, there were no B*y hils :)

busywizzy · 15/05/2006 09:21

Pidge, well done on tackling a hill and Crunchie, well done on achieving 42 minutes. I feel a bit pathetic being proud of running 2.5 miles but I've only just started is how I'm looking at it Grin

Didn't run yesterday as my legs were aching still from the day before (more the cycling than running I think). They're still sore today but I'm determined to run this evening.

Went out and bought some proper running clothes though so I'm not wearing a skanky pair of tracksuit bottoms on Sunday in my fun-run.

Pidge · 15/05/2006 11:47

Busywizzy - when I (re-)started running in September I was only managing 10 minutes to start with. So 2.5 miles is plenty.

Good work on the running clothes - I was pathetically organised, and ran my first 10k boiling hot in my far too cosy, and very scruffy tracky bottoms. Went out that very afternoon and invested in some whizzo running shorts, not to mention a new pair of running shoes.

Only exercise I'll have today is chasing dd1 + 2 round the local softplay!

busywizzy · 15/05/2006 20:37

Some advice ladies please. I went running tonight but about 10 minutes in, I got a really bad stitch in my left ribs. I tried running through it but it was quite painful so in the end I stopped and walked for a bit. The pain started as soon as I started jogging again so I walked some more and third time lucky, it had gone.

What was likely to have caused this and what is the best way to deal with it - any suggestions.

I was disappointed that my run hadn't gone so well but when I got home, I had completed the run in 25 minutes, my usual time so I was quite pleased. Maybe I started too quickly?

titchy · 16/05/2006 10:55

Hi Busy...

I don't think anyone is 100% sure what causes stitches. I think they're the diaghram stretching. They seem to be related to breathing whatever, so it sounds like you started too quickly, or without warming up enough. Or maybe you ate something just before you went out?

I don;t generally get stitches these days, but if I do I take it very slowly until the stitch has gone, then build back up very gradually. Any sign of a stitch and I don't up the pace. You could also try breathing twice as fast (a bit like the panting stage in childbirth!!!).

Crunchie is that an uphill at the end or a downhill? I did my usual route in reverse last night and found ie a lot easier - the road bit was downhill slightly while the woods bit was uphill - which of course I don't like but it's much nice being in the woods than on the road so that made up for it a bit! I managed 5.5 miles in 10.75 minute pace so a slight improvement - was doing 11 min miles on a 5+ mile run. am aiming to get this down to 10 min miles over the next few weeks before the British 10k. I tried 10 mins of intervals over a very short run (2 miles) which was OK, but tried the same in the middle of a 4.5 mile run and it took it out of me so much I ended up plugging in 2 walking breaks. So not best pleased. Do I keep going with this intervals lark or just stick to plan A which was 1 fast run a week, gradually increasing the distance?

JoPG · 16/05/2006 22:12

Busy - I find that if I drink too much before i run then I get a stitch, if running in the evening I make sure I have not had a drink for at least an hour before.

leogaela · 17/05/2006 13:38

Jo - did you run the whole marathon without eating or drinking Shock.

Busy, I think maybe you started off too fast or went too fast at one point. Try holding something really tight in your hand or stop and breath really deeply blowing air out as hard as you can. if they don't work for me the only other solution is to walk it off.
