For SoftStuff, tyedye and anyone else who wants to join.

The rules are that you HAVE to sign in every night to let us know TRUTHFULLY how much you have drunk. You need to let us know your triggers too. So if you resisted for 12 hours but then cracked and had a beer - what finally snapped?

We'll be here to give you encouragement, support, advice and opinions.

OP posts:

sorry for hijack!

SoftStuff · 12/05/2006 14:31

Thanks loads for your supportive messages.

Well i've managed another night without a drink, probably a complete record for me! I really don't feel good though. I have a killer head and just feel 'odd' hard to describe! I've been quite low too.

Carla, The psych i'm waiting to see was in relation to the ptsd so I have no idea. Not sure i'm going to see him after this morning. The cpn was ok but doesn't believe in diagnosis's just the symptoms wrt the cause. He says my 'depression/ptsd' is only circumstancial. I.e. I need to deal with the sh*t that made me feel this way. We spoke about the drinking in quite a lot of detail and said it's actually really common some months after a traumatic event. So is, apparently, the things I got up to on my wild weekend.

He suggested going for walks to clear my mind, I understand where he's coming from but that's hardly realistic for me!

I'm afraid I will be having a drink tonight but I wont be alone, a friend's coming over. I hope no one sees this as me falling off the wagon etc but after my week and having remained alcohol free I bloody need it.

SoftStuff · 12/05/2006 14:32

butty - i've been craving (& eating Blush) chocolate too.

dinosaure · 12/05/2006 14:33

SoftStuff you've done brilliantly, staying off alcohol all week. Enjoy yourself this evening.

I've managed two nights off this week (after God knows how many nights of drinking every night). Try again from Sunday onwards...

SoftStuff · 12/05/2006 14:42

Thanks Dinosair & well done! Smile It really is hard to break the habit, isn't it?

themoon66 · 12/05/2006 14:49

Softstuff - ive been meaning to say - i've had terrible headaches too. I wake up between 4 and 5am every morning and first thing i think is 'god, i must have been hammered last night with this head'. Then I remember i havent drunk at all. Get up, take paracetamol and go back to sleep. Feel 'strange' in myself though... sort of woolly. Skin is looking better though. Looked closely in magnifying mirror last night and I swear my nose to mouth lines and my frown lines are not as deep.

Am thinking I will have a couple of glasses of cava tonight. But as someone already said .... will probably be pissed by the first one.

Oh - another plus - i've lost 4lbs Shock

blueteddy · 12/05/2006 14:53

Softstuff, you have done really well to stay off drink all week! You have done far better than me, who has only managed 2 out of 4 nights so far this week!
Enjoy yourself tonight - you deserve it!Smile

SoftStuff · 12/05/2006 14:54

That's it, it's just like having a hangover!! Several times I keep thinking oh I shouldn't drink so much, then I also remember that actually I haven't! I have taken nurofen galore this week. Hopefully by having a drink tonight it'll cut down the withdrawal. I am going to try to refrain from drink for a week again until the following weekend. I'm still gobsmacked how much taking it away has affected me. Not good eh?

dinosaure · 12/05/2006 14:55

4 lbs, themoon66? Fantastic! That really is an inspiration to me to try harder next week, feel very lardy at the moment...Sad

SoftStuff · 12/05/2006 14:55

bt - 2 out of 4 is half way there! Smile It's still an achievement.

SoftStuff · 12/05/2006 14:56

The amount of chocolate I have confused there's no way i'm getting on the scales!!!!

blueteddy · 12/05/2006 14:57

I guess! I am going to try not to have a drink tonight, but am visiting my sister tomorrow, so will have one or two (bottles!) there.

kokeshi · 12/05/2006 14:58

Well done SoftStuff, you've made real progress and I don't think anyone's in a position to question you! It seems like you are making real in-roads to the roots of your drinking, and that in itself may change your pattern and reasons for drinking.

Actually, it is very common to crave sugar after drinking too much. There has been recent research into the link between hypoglycaemia (low blod sugar) and people developing drink problems. I was advised in the early day to have someting like a boiled sweet if I had a craving (not too good for your teeth, but diverts the initial craving until it subsides)

It is so important to eat properly as well, again hunger can trigger cravings. There are lots of useful and handy hints to get you through the day if you're trying to cut down!

Well done moony, butty, and dinosaure too! Noddyholder, great to hear that your DP has a positive experience of living sober! Especially in the early days, it was crucial for me to hear that it wasn't the end of my life when I stopped drinking.

Tyedye, hope you're OK. And all the others who've been on the thread...let us know how you are xxxx

kokeshi · 12/05/2006 15:06

moony, the Ikea Leeds opening times are 9am-8pm [smile}

noddyholder · 12/05/2006 15:09

I think it might be better to have a really nice massage or facial as a treat for doing so well rather than rewarding yourself with alcohol which has made you so miserable in the past.

dandycandyjellybean · 12/05/2006 20:27

hello.............. [big scared emoticon]........can I join in? I'm a total piss head and have been for about 15 years. Managed to stay off the booze reasonably well whilst pg, but have gone back to the bottle big stylie since ds was born. Not too good as I have just started taking ad's too. I used to down half a bottle of vodka and the same of verouth most nights (way way pre-baby) but these days manage to eek myself out on a bottle of whiskey a week and several bottles of wine. I can only admit this to you guys, coz I'm fairly sure you won't judge me, although I have to admit I've been hanging around this thread for ages and havent' had the courage to post......Blush..........

dandycandyjellybean · 12/05/2006 20:39

anyone.........................? beginning to get a bit afraid I've done the wrong thing........Sad

blueteddy · 12/05/2006 20:47

Nobody will judge you, cubby. You sound like you want to cut down your drinking, just like the rest of us.
Have you had a drink tonight?

dandycandyjellybean · 12/05/2006 20:48

yes but only wine, which is good for me.

dandycandyjellybean · 12/05/2006 20:49

can't face the idea of giving up completly, but if I could stick to wine, and not too much of that, I would be happy.

expatinscotland · 12/05/2006 20:52

cubby
what sorts of things have you tried to try to cut back - switching to a different type of alcohol from your 'usual', not keeping it in the house, etc.?

dandycandyjellybean · 12/05/2006 20:57

you name it i've done it over the years in an attempt to cut down....but nothing (except pg) has ever worked....I was anorexic as a teenager, and bulimic in my twenties (addicted to over the counter chest meds) (amphetamines), so I guess perhaps I have an addictive personality.

blueteddy · 12/05/2006 21:00

If you could stick to just a couple of glasses of wine a night, that's fine.
Have you tried buying alcohol that you are not as keen on, to slow you down?
I tried that with red wine (used to only drink white), but got rather a taste for it. However, I do tend to drink less of it & I definitely drink it slower.

expatinscotland · 12/05/2006 21:04

i hear ya, cubby. i used to be dependent on drink and cigarettes to survive. even now, i still get horrible cravings for both.

still have to have plenty of coffee and tea, though (except whilst pregnant).

good on you for recognising that you need to cut back.

dandycandyjellybean · 12/05/2006 21:37

am currently on red wine (cheap and nasty at that to slow me down) which I find hard to drink fast/in quantity. so as you say, i don't drink as much......
