Dry January - a month off the booze - anyone want to join me?

Doshusallie · 01/01/2013 14:54

I am determined to do this - I drink most days, it's become a habit, just a glass or two, more at weekends, but really want to give myself an extended break.

The worst time of day for me is between 6-8 pm, before we eat. So am going to try and eat earlier and it would be great if I could come on here and get some support about that time of day!

does anybody want to have a dry January with me?

And yes I do have a hangover today Grin

I feel like I'm cheating as I gave up breast feeding just before Christmas, so I'm used to not drinking. DH on the other hand is finding it tough, especially as he is having tiring days at work.

I've had the WORST nights sleep in ages for the last two nights Grin! But I know that's a side effect that'll wear off quickly.

The danger for me is going to be the weekend. Saturday night without my mates Sav Blanc or Hendricks?!

I signed up for Cancer Research Dryathlon but have since found out am pregnant so cannot drink anyway!

Still doing it though as only a select few know of the pregnancy, it's proving a convenient get out when asked why not drinking nudge nudge wink wink Grin

Congrats fooffighter!!!

Have managed so far this evening as have been ferrying dcs around in the car. Would kill for a glass of something now though. Getting me through is the knowledge I won't have that puffy eyed, sluggish, headachy start to my mornings. Not a hangover per se and dissipated by 10ish but good not to have it at all and feel fresher.

Will go and stand at fridge and see what grabs me, probably diet ginger ale. LOVE the idea of a dry glass!!!!!

Hello all! Can I join in please?

Had my last drink on New Year's Eve (well, technically the wee hours of New Year's Day). I've not found it too much of a struggle so far, which is odd as I usually have a beer every night once the kids are in bed. It's normally my 'off duty' sign, which is a habit I want to break.

Am sure Friday night will be tough.

Congrats, FoofFighter!

Dh has just pointed out the half drunk bottle of champagne from nye. This was a present for our wedding in June, but we kept it until I could drink, as I was 7 months pregnant at the time. DH won't drink it, as he is raising money for charity. Can I drink it, just to get rid of it? If it was any old plonk, I wouldn't mind, but its special. I'll be good for the rest of the month, promise!

Day 3 done but it was tough today. Was saved by going out for a walk with a friend. Can't wait for the sleepless nights to stop though.

Thank you!! I've decided to have it at the weekend, but at least I can have it without feeling guilty!

Day three and still here. Tomorrow and Saturday nights will be tougher especially as DH will probably crack open a beer!

We can do this - weekend looming. Think how fresh and vibrant we are going to feel with no booze all weekend, and how virtuous!!!!! Day 4 bring it on.

Day 3 completed.. Tropical squash just isn't cuttting it though. Will have to get something a bit more glamorous.

Have hidden all the bottles we got for Christmas in the garage (out of sight, out of mind).

Day 3 done and I feel so much better for not drinking.

Haven't really thought about it either.

Still here too but not finding it too hard as still feeling sick of it since the festive time.

Stocked up on some j2o orange & passionfruit, lovely poured over lots of ice or in a pint glass topped up with lemonade for a fizzy alternative.

Wondering will I still feel the same tomorrow when DH and I go out for a meal. At the moment I'm not bothered but sat in the restaurant I may feel differently. Think I might drive to avoid temptation.

... Looking at the time, it's actually later today... Awake with DD

I'm in too - have had a dry January every year since 2000. So far, so good.

Still sleeping like a baby though... ie, tossing and turning and taking an age to get off. Grrrr! When does the serenity kick in?! Grin

Checking in for day 4! Bring it on. Ditto the sleep and my mind racing, I am doing a lot of thinking about stuff I have been trying not to think about for months......

Have a good day all x

Morning all, checking in. Dh also not drinking, on low carb diet and is also trying to quit smoking - so he is not sleeping at all really, and you can imagine what sort of mood he is in!!!

testduck. I am going to drive tonight too.

Ciao peeps.
Comfortably through last night. Got a bit twitchy around 9 (dinner time!), I think DH could sense it as he said "if you want a glass of wine, have one, don't worry about it". Luckily, none cold, otherwise I might have crumpled there and then!!

First night of much much better sleep. Not perfect, a bit restless early on, but then slept straight through until 7 and it felt really good.

I will have wine tonight, not much, but some - am at PIL's and I am not on a complete abstinence kick, just a bit "cut it right down" kick.

Loving the completely clear head in the mornings!!!! Joy, joy, joy.

Everyone is doing brilliantly - well done

I bought beetroot juice, soda water, orange juice and posh tonic water yesterday for less than the price of one bottle of wine. I'm looking forward to a nice icy cold tonic with lime tonight and going for a nice brisk walk in the sun at 10am tomorrow, with a clear head. I'm also planning to cook a nice dinner tomorrow night and to make a crumble for afters. So yay, all good so far Grin
