Dry January - a month off the booze - anyone want to join me?

Doshusallie · 01/01/2013 14:54

I am determined to do this - I drink most days, it's become a habit, just a glass or two, more at weekends, but really want to give myself an extended break.

The worst time of day for me is between 6-8 pm, before we eat. So am going to try and eat earlier and it would be great if I could come on here and get some support about that time of day!

does anybody want to have a dry January with me?

And yes I do have a hangover today Grin

I'm in. Try and do this every Jan despite dh undermining me at every turn.

I might need special dispensation for 12th Jan though as it's my little brother's 30th birthday party Grin

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 02/01/2013 20:02

oh gosh I would love to but I really need to work out how as I have got a bit too fond of the booze recently and despite probably poisoning myself over the hols and feeling really rough today I still had to argue with myself not to open the bottle of prosecco chilling in the fridge. One day down so will try hard, probably will aim for none during the week to start with and cutting back at weekends and see if I can manage this.

Doshusallie · 02/01/2013 20:03

Have eaten tea and glugged two pints of fizzy water and no booze. Baby steps people, baby steps.....

That sound nasty sugar glad you are ok. I believe you, even though your story sounds a bit fishy Grin

stepaway I hope you don't mind me saying this, but it was the thought that I COULDN'T do this that has reinforced my belief that I really SHOULD do it.

Yes, Dosh thats why I am seriously thinking of doing it but I don't want to start with an unreachable goal, baby steps to prove I can do it and add to it rather than failing at the first hurdle and feeling really shit. t never drinks during the week so I can take strength from him. If I can do that then cutting back at weekends will be easier, then its just another step to cutting it back to special occaisons. I need to lose weight too so will combine the two efforts.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 02/01/2013 20:12

t? should say DH

ItLooksLikeRainDear · 02/01/2013 20:14

A nice cup of lady grey tonight was much more enjoyable than a glass of wine Brew

Doshusallie · 02/01/2013 20:14

Sounds very sensible, and agree with starting with achievable goals. Easy for me to sound pious on day 2, I will be climbing the walls by 6pm Friday.....

We do this every year too. We have a planned cheat on our anniversary but other than that we usually complete it. I find the last few days tough and dh finds the first weekend tough. Mostly we have lost weight but not last year - bloody age catching up with us.

mkvcdk · 02/01/2013 20:34

I am also doing a dry Jan and am relieved to have some company and support! First day was easy, second day harder I must admit!

ifancyashandy · 02/01/2013 20:47

Day 1 here also. Drank more than Oli Read on NYE (well, technically NYD, as we stopped at 5am. And then had a bottle of bubbly between 5 of us yesterday lunchtime. Followed by a Bloody Mary). Not hungover today. But very jaded. Definitely want to lose my Christmas Wine Waist...

BettySuarez · 02/01/2013 20:48

Me and DH in too. It's good to have some company Smile

Yesterday was easy but today a bit tougher. All the more reason to stick with it though

DewDr0p · 02/01/2013 20:50

Anyone got any good ideas of nice soft drinks to have in the evenings? I don't have a very sweet tooth and struggle to find alternatives to wine Shock

EggRules · 02/01/2013 20:54

Can I join please?

I have bought some soft drinks Lilt zero and pineapple cordial to have with soda water.

Badgersnatch · 02/01/2013 20:59

I'll join if I can have my 40th birthday off

rubberglove · 02/01/2013 21:01

Can I join?

I only drink at weekends normally, but probably too much. Two bottles of wine over the weekend.

This xmas I have drank every night of the holidays and I feel very jaded and bloated today.

A dry month would be so good for me

determinedma · 02/01/2013 21:35

Lime and soda or lime and tonic is not too sweet and very refreshing

Doshusallie · 02/01/2013 21:37

You may badger

Diet ginger beer dewdrop?

MulledwineGless · 02/01/2013 21:42

Waves to Dosh- did my penance in November but cutting down for Jan after the excesses of the festive season.

The first week is the hardest mainly because it is a habit. You don't really NEED it

Good luck all

Bearcat · 02/01/2013 21:54

Yes DH and I are doing this again.
Friday nights are my worst nights for going without. Think I can manage the other nights.
Last year when we did it some friends came round to watch our local rugby team on TV with us and for a take away curry.
DH bought me a bottle of non-alcohol pear cider which was very nice well chilled.

tuffinmop · 02/01/2013 22:07

Day 2 done and dusted Grin yey! Just got to finish the chocs off and I can be really virtuous.

dewdrop I like fizzy water (value is fine) with elderflower cordial, mmmmmm.

This is great to get some support, I feel like I struggle with alcohol a bit, I feel down and guilty when I over do it, and its become something I do to chill out, need to find a new way to chill. Power walk tomorrow.
Dosh I think we sound like similar drinkers, by Friday I will be climbing the walls too I bet! I shall come on here for a stern talking to.

Doshusallie · 02/01/2013 22:09

Unfortunately I have to sit in a pub all Friday evening with my boozy family. I will drive to remove temptation.

OP posts:
Ruprekt · 02/01/2013 22:11

I am in too! As is DH. It has become too much of a habit instead of a treat.

Day 2 - done!

MegBusset · 02/01/2013 22:13

I'm in too. I don't normally drink very much (a glass of wine every other night) but over December it crept up to two glasses of wine most nights and then at Christmas there was loads of Malibu & pineapple and some very nice Aldi prosecco. Added to the extra food and I have got a few pounds I'd like to shake, I find that if I drink I'm much more likely to attack the chocolate before bedtime.

Have a weekend away with DH at the end of the month so am aiming for the 25th.
