OP posts:
topsyturner · 15/10/2012 09:20

Keep the shirtbread coming please , I feel it may be a very long day !

smee · 15/10/2012 10:39

Any shirtbread left?? Fab, thinking of you until you're back with us. xx

Two sick DC's, Topsy? What's up? Is it catching?

Baskets, I've noted that book down too, so ta for that. Smile

Sofagate on-going here. I got British Heart Foundation to come and fetch our old battered sofa. They sell them and buy ECG's or something (my sofa could save a life!) They came first thing and were v.sweet, but the worst removals men ever. DH stropping about as he'd taken DS to school and came home to see they'd grazed the banisters, knocked a bit paint off the walls and taken a teeny chunk out of the front door. Clearly not good, but DH seems to think it's the end of the world as we know it. Not helped by me saying 'well we needed to decorate anyway.' Grin

MaryAnnSingleton · 15/10/2012 10:46

uh oh smee ! Am glad old sofa is saving lives though.
I know have an urge for shirtbread - am going to lunch with friend later (to same cafe as I'm meeting ned at) and there are sumptuous cakes there- my very favourite is the orange polenta cake...yum.
Must start work on the joke book- have just finished a tricky commission which required much thinking and research, but it seems to have turned out ok,thank goodness.

smee · 15/10/2012 10:50

Well done on finishing commission, MAS. Cake to kickstart the next one sounds good. I can never get my head round polenta in cake. Must try harder if it's delis. Smile

MaryAnnSingleton · 15/10/2012 10:53

oh it's yum, a slight crunchy texture which goes v well with the syrupy bit...

Birdland · 15/10/2012 10:59

Hi all-I had a bit of a dramatic day yesterday. I spent most of it in hospital with tachycardia, high temp and allergic reaction to PICC line dressing -should really have been sunning myself at Southbank.

Thankfully it was all a bit of a storm in a teacup and no doubt these things happen on chemo.

I was told my calcium levels were on the low side (probably after giving up dairy 2 months ago). Did any of you take any supplements during chemo? There seems to be a lot of conflicting info about whether you should.

Thanks

smee · 15/10/2012 11:02

Birdland, that sounds scary. Pesky picc lines do seem to cause a lot of problems. Did you give up dairy after diagnosis? I think you have to be very cautious about supplements on chemo. I didn't take any, but maybe some of the others did. Am sure someone wise will be along soon. Smile

Birdland · 15/10/2012 11:16

Thanks Smee, I read all the Jane Plant stuff and although not totally convinced I decided to give up dairy and meat. It wasn't difficult for me as I've never been a cheese/meat fan.

However I think that my appetite has decreased so much since I started chemo that I'm probably not getting enough vits and minerals.

Yesterday was scary although I think my tachycardia was caused by sheer anxiety as it came right down when I got home! I really hate hospitals but again I was so amazed at the care and kindness of the staff.

I'll discuss supplements with my onc-the on call oncologist told me yesterday that they may prescribe a vit D/calcium supplement

MaryAnnSingleton · 15/10/2012 11:57

yikes birdland - hope all is well now.

OP posts:
Birdland · 15/10/2012 12:02

Hi mas-yes I'm fine now thanks. I think it was the dastardly PICC line so I now have antibiotics. Hope your treatment is going ok

smee · 15/10/2012 12:38

Birdland I read that Jane Plant book too, but am embarrassed to say I love cheese too much so didn't follow her advice. I don't eat meat anyway, so that bit was easy! I stopped drinking alcohol mid week and decided just to eat as sensibly as I could and reduce the amount of dairy. Who knows if that was wise or not. I should think a Vit D supplement's a good idea. Did you know you have to watch iron levels on chemo? I was eating as many iron rich foods as I could and I still ended up anaemic, so watch out for that one.

Gigondas · 15/10/2012 12:46

Oh dear birdland that sounds horrid and i completely agree about hospitals making you worse . Whilst on chemo , I took 20mf zinc, 150mg magnesium (at night as helps sleep), propolis, Manuka honey , aloe Vera juice and something called e3 live that boosts immune. I also ate lots of dairy and protein on advice of nutrionist.

Hands topsy a bag and some rubber gloves. Sick bugs are the pits. Mini gig and dh had a nasty cold which think i have now got as feeling bit bleurgh.

smee Grin at end of world as we know it about sofa- but at least they took it.

George Michael on Saturday was excellent but I have managed to over do it (climbing five sets of stairs probably not a great idea) so leg now really stiff where had radiotherapy.

fabhope all goes well today.

Waves at mas baskets kurri ned gracie amber sandripples jchoc and anyone else around a

KurriKurri · 15/10/2012 14:34

afternoon all,

Birdland - what a horrid experience, tachycardia can be quite frightening, I hope you are OK now. I have read some of the Jane Plant stuff, - I am veggie, so dairy played quite a high role in my diet, but I have been cutting down and now have more nuts and pulses. I do have several friends who have had cancer who have given up dairy.

Fab - I hope you are now sitting up I hospital having a cup of tea and toast, and feeling much more relaxed Smile Thanks for the shirtbread Grin

Smee- well done for having your old sofa pimped into a ECG machine, - it will no doubt be much more comfortable than the old style not-an-old-sofa machines Grin Grin

Whoops about removal men knocking bannisters and wall, - I find that since I've been ill, I really can't get worked up about those sort of things, whereas my DH like yours, would be foaming at the mouth!

topsy - yuk to sickness bug, hope it goes soon and you manage to avoid it.

MAS - well done on finishing commission, and good luck with the joke book, am Shock Italian cafe did not know what coffee and walnut cake is - well done your mum for educating them for your birthdayGrin

Gig - sounds like you had a great time at George Michael concert, - sorry about the leg though, - you'll have to take it easy. Hope you manage to avoid the little Gigs cold.

I went to yoga this morning, so I'm just off to have a bath, for my onc appointment at 4 - don't want to be stinky when he prods my chest!

MaryAnnSingleton · 15/10/2012 15:03

am just adding some portuguese custard tarts to the trolley- they are amazing, and kind friend brought me a box of rose & violet creams and a big bag of mini toblerones !

Topsy - sorry your DCs are poorly.

MAS - DS1 told me a brilliant joke and I think it is my all time favourite joke.

MaryAnnSingleton · 15/10/2012 15:28

kk hope onc. visit goes well xxxx

OP posts:
smee · 15/10/2012 15:38

Yay for Fab! Glad you're back safely. I always get a headache on GA too. Never sure if it's the drugs or the anxiety and nil-by-mouth. Rest up xx

Gig, how was gorgeous George? Did you dance? Smile

JustFabulous · 15/10/2012 15:40

I will share the joke. I haven't posted it yet as I am waiting for DS1 to get home so he can tell it to me again and I can get it exactly right as I can't remember it perfectly.

The nurses were lovely. I was bumped up from 3 to 2 as a lady had drunk too much and had to wait.

I have to go back in 6 weeks for the results. Long wait Sad.
