Morning all,

Thinking of you pink today. Hope your appointment goes well and your treatment plan is sorted.

Glad you have finally got your shingles sorted kurri.

MaryAnnSingleton · 10/09/2012 11:20

I chose to ignore bush (prim)
kk meant to say well done for impressive weightloss and bah about shingles again- hope new stuff sorts it.

Gigondas · 10/09/2012 11:27

Another one holding your hand today pink. Will also have spare hands for gracie and mas for me (and they can hold mine in return).

Have just eaten a double decker which had to be up there with tablet and Kendal Mint cake on sickly front.

I need to take my knitting in really as not progressing as fast as I would like (was meant to be ready for mini gigs birth Blush).

yoo hoo, everyone Smile I've been lurking away and meaning to pop in, anyway hope everyone is doing well. Going back for a good catch up in a moBlush

After the mastectomy and node clearence a year ago (its a whole year!!!!) and getting an osteoporosis diagnosis, they've now decided I have thyrotoxicosis, over-active thyroid and until this is sorted no re-construction for me. Too dangerous they said. I'm on Carbimazole and if that doesn't work they want to try radio-active injections Shock

If they don't work I'll need surgery to remove all or part of my thyroid. If surgery is too dangerous though I'm not sure how that will workConfused

On top of all this my left arm (breast removal side) has started to feel like the skin is too tight, it's quite painful. Could this be lyphadema, even after a year? If it is what do they do about it?

Any advice gratefully receivedSmile

graciesmall09 · 10/09/2012 11:55

Hi earthmother we haven't 'met' before. I haven't had lymphodema but my bcn told me it can happen at any time even years down the line. I think they can give you a sleeve to compress the arm. Could you phone your bcn and see if you can be seen. Sorry to hear about your thyroid problems a lady I worked with had part of her thyroid removed and the op was very successful.

Sometimesiwonder · 10/09/2012 11:57

Hi Earth

Ooh, sounds grim Sad

I thing lymphoedema sounds the most likely explanation, TBH. Erm.... I seem to remember the nurses telling me that wine makes it worse so you could try cutting that out for a bit, if you are drinking even a little bit. This is really the disease that keeps on giving, isn't it? Sad

It can come on many years after treatment. You'll need to see the BCN. I'm not sure what they do, but believe it involves special exercises. Sorry.

smee · 10/09/2012 12:00

Waving to Earthmother, how lovely to see you back. Smile Gracie's right it could easily be lymphoedema. BCN is a good call - they usually send you to a special clinic. I get it v.mildly and it comes and goes. I just ignore it, but am lucky as it's so low level. Bugger about the thyroid problems. Kurri's the thyroid expert, so I'd bet she'll have some thoughts on that..

EarthMotherImNot · 10/09/2012 12:09

No wine you say pfffft. I have an appointment with the surgeon and BCN on the 24th September, thats 2 weeks away. Will it keep until then do you think? I hate the place with a passion, every time I go they find something else bloody wrong with me. If I can wait until then I'd have a breathing space.

I never used to be such a snivelling coward Blush

During my very first meeting with the surgeon he prodded my neck and said "do you know you have thyroid problems" I didn't, I have no symptoms and wouldn't have known a thing about it had he not pointed out it was slightly uneven.
I've been looking in the book my BCN gave me at the beginning and it mentiond clinics. There are about 4-5 of them, weirdly they are all based in hospicesConfused

NedSchneebly · 10/09/2012 12:18

I am now very poor - have just parted with £300+ for 3 new pairs of glasses Shock Apparently my prescription has changed enough to need new ones. Have gone a bit more bold than usual very sensible, nothing style. Will try to find ones I chose and do a linky.

Any news from pink? Thinking of you lots love, if you're lurking x x

sometimes I shall officially be running screaming from the building if anyone comes near me with XL fat measuring implements. . .

kurri boo for rotten shingles. Hope new super strong drugs work their magic and get rid of them once and for all.

Bush is indeed a funny word. . . Smile

Sometimesiwonder · 10/09/2012 12:28

Ned Grin

Well, you know, you DO deserve the funky specs.

Earth - it probably can wait until 24th, but I'd phone and mention it. Sorry about the hospices thing, that is indeed unfortunate, and hard to cope with. In the meantime, gentle exercises of the type the hospital gave you after surgery may help to encourage that pesky lymph to flow a bit freer. x

EarthMotherImNot · 10/09/2012 12:43

Thank you, exercises can't hurt I guess .Smile

Sometimesiwonder · 10/09/2012 12:51

Well, to be fair they might hurt Wink

But they might also make you feel a bit virtuous, which could be a novel sensation, if nothing else Smile

MaryAnnSingleton · 10/09/2012 12:57

waves to earth -bah about poss. lymphoedema snd thyroid probs..am sure kk will have advice.
ned you most certainly deserve fab new specs -and bold sounds good to me- am so pleased I got mine.
Am hoping optician won't realise that my specs didn'tcome from them, but are from the Specsavers ....

NedSchneebly · 10/09/2012 13:19

Mine are from the specsavers too MAS got two pink/purple/blue - ish pairs with thicker bolder "arms" iyswim, and dark red pair as sunglasses. Am considering a public unveiling of my new head of hair to coincide with new glasses. . . I've been covering it still when I go out, but its becoming a little bit more controllable, so not long before I might feel OK to be seen in public with no covering!

smee · 10/09/2012 13:20

Earth, do you swim?? I find the stretch of backstroke really helps mine. Definitely improves it and makes me feel mighty virtuous at the same time. Grin

Hospice thing happens round here too. The Young Women's Cancer group takes place at the hospice. And they wonder why hardly anyone attends... Hmm

KurriKurri · 10/09/2012 13:21

Hi EarthMother - lovely to see you Smile

Sorry to hear about your thyroid problems though - but hopefully they will get them sorted out quickly, - it's good you have no symptoms, as they can be something of a pain! - I've got Graves disease, - so not exactly the same as your problem but also causes over active thyroid, I was on carbimazole and then I opted for radioactive iodine treatment - in my case it was a drink I had to take at the hospital - just the one dose - then I had to keep my ddistance from the rest of the family for about a week IIRC. Not sure what happens with the injections in regard to precautions around others though.

Anyway the upshot was it seems to have sorted the over active thyroid, - but went a bit to far the other way and made it underactive - so now I'm on levothyroxine which I take everyday, - no side effects to this drug luckily. It's pretty common to be left with underactive after the treatment, but that's easier to treat than overactive.

The main problem I found was that its a bit of a balancing act sorting out dosages and measuring effects of treatment - you have to keep waiting 2 months to see if something is working and if its not, then you can feel quite unwell during that period. But the fact that you don't have symptoms is a definite plus I think, hopefully they will get yours under control, and you won't feel unwell.

I'm OK now, and have a blood test every few months to check on the dosage, - if there's anything at all you think I can help with, just ask - happy to answer any questions if I can Smile

Sorry about the lymphodoema - that is a pain Sad - hope you can get that sorted out soon.

Ned - specs sound snazzy - pics please Smile

NedSchneebly · 10/09/2012 18:10

These and and these are my new specs, and these are my sunglasses Hope they'll look OK!

NedSchneebly · 10/09/2012 18:17

Look for the more red-ish option in each case!

KurriKurri · 10/09/2012 18:18

ooh I likey Ned - very nice specs, and will really suit you. Smile

smee · 10/09/2012 18:28

Fab specs, Ned. Definitely worth the money. Grin

No news from Pink yet. Hope she's okay.

MaryAnnSingleton · 10/09/2012 19:42
