It is sad kurri .

I did Grin at your brown owl tale (dunno why as signing big gig to rainbows next year) as mine was definite someone who would have failed a crb check. My dad who rarely got animated about stuff as a kid tore her off a strip (and I think complained to the guiding association who made the woman retrain) when they brought me back from a trip with pneumonia that I should have been sent to
Hospital.

sr I am another London girl but can see how it is daunting. I am sure that they do a lot to help students settle. And from my knowledge of engineers/science types , you find that you have one set of students and what was known in a very non pc way as the Cantonese club Blush when I was at uni.

Oh and I know exactly what you mean about where goldsmiths is mas and I am
A s london girl who grew up not far away.

SR if it helps my nephew and niece both went to london unis (kings and UCL) and had a fabulous tim, their Halls were fab and they met lovely kids who they ened up with all 3 years. I think it takes courage (and i went from very small town to London as a student and LOVED it) and an ability to master the tube map

Baskets45 · 20/08/2012 18:46

Hello everyone. Phew, just caught up after weekend away at 'wedding of the year' which was lovely though very tiring. (nephew1 is now a married man and his little bro gave a very good best man speech, bits of which still have me laughing). We have ds1's birthday tomorrow - apart from him, i am only 'responsible' adult type here tomorrow so will have to do baking and cooking etc solo, and find some spare energy from somewhere. Very tired after weekend, but it was worth it. But I had nausea free weekend, Yay and travel and accomm was good. And loopy sons were great (apart froma few incidents which were quite funny really, in hindsight). Think MINOR security incident at airport (it'sa whole other thread) involving sons of basket, and a very very long long Latin mass.

So sorry to see some of you having bad times. Poor gracie with your sore 'bits' - anal fissures are horrid and very common, but not something many people talk about. How is the arm and temp? good, i hope. Mas, sadly depression can be part of PD. Is there a PD nurse specialist in your area she could talk to, with/without your dad? It's a fact that not taking her med regulary won't help her condition. I think it's very hard for OH of a PD person - my mum had PD and it was very difficult for my dad. ILGC - sorry you've hada rough time - in the circumstnces not a surprise though. What you've had to deal with in a very short space of time is HUGE - one of those life events is big, several is almost incomprehensible. Sorry, grammar gone to pot (you know wot I mean, teach!!!)

But good that Amber and Topsy had good hols (Connemara is definitely on my list of places to see ...). Also brillian tnews of sandripples' boy's results and place at Imperial - my BIL went there too, a long, long time ago. I do 'get' your concerns about boy going to big city - it's exciting and daunting at same time esp for his mum who won't be there :-). Is smee away to Oz then? Wow.

Love and best wishes to all. Hope I've not missed anyone, anything - I've rad it all, just memory hasn't been miraculously improved, sadly.

KurriKurri · 20/08/2012 18:47

I think the fact that your DS is doing science is a bonus SR, - when DH did biochem at Edinburgh - it was very much a group of people spending a fair amount of time together - as they have loads of practicals and most of the time is timetabled. So they do tend to get to know each other pretty well Smile

Baskets45 · 20/08/2012 19:14

Yes, i agree with kurri. That was my always my experience of science students back then, and no reason to think it's changed. Will the boy be in halls for 1st year? That gives him a safer environment to settle in to start with too.

sandripples · 20/08/2012 19:29

Thank-you for all your comments about London espcailly hearing about people who've studied there and enjoyed it - yes its true they will have a lot of time-tabled time in Chem Eng. so that must help, and yes he will be in Halls - we're just waiting to hear which one. He's also planning to join various societies so he's planning all the right things. I went to Edinburgh and recall that there were various clusters of people you could find friends from - the course, the accommodation, and clubs etc.
I did live in London for 10 years myself (lived in SW London and worked in the centre) and enjoyed it a lot, although I was working by then so had enough money to do things - not sure that students can afford to do much, but then at least some of them will be in the same boat (I suspect the Cantonese/Middle East contingent may be rather wealthy!)

BTW I was laughing about you non-sailors as I belong to that club too - my DH is passionate about sailing but sadly I am not! I have tried now and again, but to no avail.

topsyturner · 20/08/2012 20:47

SR it must be so hard to think about him being away from you .
My nephew is applying for med schools for next year , and I am getting antsy about him looking at unis away from home !
God help me when it's actually my own kids !

I wish I was next in line for the DVDs kk , but believe it or not , I don't own a DVD player !
Deprived I tell ya Grin

On the tv vein , has anyone been watching The Borgias on Sky Atlantic ?
It's about as historically accurate as BBCs The Tudors I suspect , but just as entertaining male totty wise Grin Blush

Who has appointments this week ?
Gigs do you start number 4 tomorrow ?
Where's Gracie ?
You feeling too crap to post my love ?

Took the kids shopping for school shoes this evening .
Clarks had nothing in stick in their sizes .
But handily enough they have offered to order in shoes in their size free of charge .
Can't believe the hols have flown so past so quickly . DD goes back on the 27th and DS the following week !

Enough rambling .

Ilovegeorgeclooney · 20/08/2012 22:06

Hello all and thank you very much for all your words of kindness, especially Topsy who is very wise! SR DS is going to St George's in Tooting, sob, I hoped he would join his sister at Southampton but he doesn't want her checking up on him! And she would, she is the typical bossy big sister! Whilst I know he will be fine I am much more worried than I was about DD1. Firstly she was closer and secondly she is very sensible, sadly DS can still be as mad as a bag of frogs!!! But he is very excited and I am very proud, as would DH have been. When I think that this time next year I will be looking at an empty nest..............where do those gorgeous babies go?

MaryAnnSingleton · 20/08/2012 22:17

Baskets45 · 20/08/2012 23:23

Woo hoo! There is a thread on here today about remembering being born. I have wasted far too many hours of my life on MN today, have no idea where this thread is though. Good night all. My baby1 is 22 tomorrow and I have to be busy-ish.

KurriKurri · 20/08/2012 23:24

I expect you were busy checking out whether any of the doctors were orange topsy Grin

Can you watch DVD's on your computer maybe?

Waving to Baskets and to ILGC - the DD of a friend (well sort of friend/acquaintance) of ours is doing medicine at St George's - she really loves it apparently. Am sure your DS will do really well.

Ilovegeorgeclooney · 21/08/2012 00:00

Yes but he is my baby!!! What is he doing being old enough to leave home?

smee · 21/08/2012 02:38
