Champagneandnappies-I am with you all the way. I love love love my wine and my champagne and hold my hands up to drinking far too much. My BF stopped for the whole of January and rather than joining him I just sulked coz I had lost my drinking buddy!

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 01/03/2006 16:14

ill have a drink at christmas/new year and on my birthday - thats about it - with 2 little ones I cant be doing with hangovers etc - plus im the only driver, so if i needed to get the girls to the docs/a&e in the middle of the night, i would need to be sober.

puddle · 01/03/2006 16:14

I gave up after Xmas for 7 weeks. Now am limiting myself to 2 glasses 2-3 times a week. I found it easier to completely stop and not have it in the house - now I feel I have broken the habit and don't crave a glass of wine at 7.30 every day. And yes, you feel loads better, more energy and I am in a better mood generally (alcohol is a depressant).

chamapgne - a bottle of wine is, what, 5 units? that means you are totalling 35 units a week - way above the recommended 14.

crunchie · 01/03/2006 16:15

CandN I don't think most people on MN have gottheir acttogether, you have got the daytime lot here. Wait till the evening crowd arrive :)

The only thing that worked for me is going on a diet :)

noddyholder · 01/03/2006 16:18

OMG c and n that is too much! How do you function seriously I love wine but would get nothing done if I drank that much!

puddle · 01/03/2006 16:20

We also buy nicer bottles and drink more slowly! Helped me that DP went on the wagon with me for the first 4 weeks.

ChampagneandNappies · 01/03/2006 16:23

Hi Spook - thanks! Sometimes in life I feel the only way to get through DH's business dinners is by being half plastered - terrible wife aren't I!!!!? (Changing the subject now Spooks was a bloody good drama!)

Crunchie - oh crikey, you can tell I'm new to this can't you - I didn't even know that there were 2 lots of you - the daytimers and the nightimers.....I wonder whre I shall feel at home?

I gave up alcohol for the whole of January too and for the preceding 5 months didn't drink most weekdays as I was stayign with teetotal ex mil. But I am perfectly capable of drinking a bottle of wine to myself too and easily did on the nights when I went out during that 5 months. Tinygang, that's scary, that liver stuff, eek. I do worry about my liver sometimes. I'm not drinking atm though, on a health drive (see 10yrs younger thread) and I know I'll feel better for it in a couple of days (hi Puddle!)

bundle · 01/03/2006 16:27

btw, remember there are ten units in a bottle of wine, girls, not six as commonly thought..

CountessDracula · 01/03/2006 16:28

candn - you are drinking in the region of 80 units a week which is way too much given that the safe limit is 21 for a woman.
Probably best to try and cut down, maybe start by one night a week off?

puddle · 01/03/2006 16:28

10 bundle - really? Then C and N is consuming 70 week.
(hi www - I have joined your 10 years younger thread)

WideWebWitch · 01/03/2006 16:28

I find making sure I absolutely don't let myself have a glass of wine before children are in bed helps too. It's about the habit Puddle, I agree. Once you've got out of the habit of just drinking in the evenings it's a lot easier. I think I ought to go back to drinking spritzers really, it's a lot easier to limit drinking that way plus you don't ever get dehydrated. I think sometimes I just knock it back out of thirst iyswim and drink far more than Imean to or would if I had a glass of water nearby.

ChampagneandNappies · 01/03/2006 16:28

Ok - so how many units ARE you 'allowed'????

OP posts:
CountessDracula · 01/03/2006 16:29

yes www I do that too

I also try and have one glass of water between each glass of wine

bundle · 01/03/2006 16:29

yes, those glasses we drink it out of have been getting bigger...but according to british liver trust there are 10 units in a bottle of wine

CountessDracula · 01/03/2006 16:29

21

puddle · 01/03/2006 16:30

14 a week.
2-3 a day
Over 6 units at a time is classed a binge drinking.

CountessDracula · 01/03/2006 16:30

what alcohol by volume (eg 13 % ) is the wine you drink c&n?

puddle · 01/03/2006 16:30

21 for men , 14 for women

CountessDracula · 01/03/2006 16:31

puddle it was changed a couple of years ago to 21

WideWebWitch · 01/03/2006 16:31

So a bottle of wine = a binge? Even if it's over a whole night? Eeek! Oh well, am virtuous atm!

CountessDracula · 01/03/2006 16:33

21 with a caveat that should only be 2-3 in one session

puddle · 01/03/2006 16:33

Not on the NHS website CD

SenoraPostrophe · 01/03/2006 16:34

it was changed to 21. I didn't know that.

I miss wine. it all tastes like vinegar at the mo. ale doesn't though, strangely.

tribpot · 01/03/2006 16:34

I've decided to cut down on my drinking cos I'm also drinking every night. Yes, my life is very stressful but I need to find other ways of dealing with that (drugs, perhaps? Just kidding).

I've just started this online course, \link{http://www.downyourdrink.org.uk/home.php\Down Your Drink} which some of you might find useful to look at. The best bit is that there is an online drinking diary which forces you to look at just how many units you are getting through and really focuses the mind. Well worth a look!
