.....just wondering, y'know sometimes with a workoholic DH and 3 kids, you're driven to it!!

It's nearly all 14% these days, too...10.5 units x 5 bottles (in a good week Shock) is a bit scary. They were talking about livers on that R4 medical phone-in prog last week I think, will look for a link for you and me and the rest of the drinkers in a minute, C&N

I just had a look at the Allen Carr book, tribpot, and I've stuck it in my amazon basket, but I'm assuming you have to really want to give up before anything will work, like smoking (I've been on threads like this before Grin)

CountessDracula · 01/03/2006 17:24

A pint of Stella is nearly 3 units

Flip · 01/03/2006 17:24

Hi JanH! Smile

tribpot · 01/03/2006 17:25

How about even if every bottle you drank was your cheeky little Lidl Rioja at £2.75, at 5 bottles a week that's £715 a year. God knows how much I spend, but when you start adding it all up it really gets quite scary.

JanH · 01/03/2006 17:25

\link{http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/science/checkup_20060216.shtml\Here it is - Checkup} (was two weeks ago, see, losing my marbles as well as my waistline)

You can listen again or read a transcript. (Or not!)

JanH · 01/03/2006 17:28

Hello, Flip! Smile How's things? (Hope you are just passing through this thread unlike little-old-wine-drinker-us?)

tribpot, £715 is a v conservative estimate - it's closer to £1100 which is really stupid and embarrassing.

spidermama · 01/03/2006 17:30

I probably have about half a bottle of wine most days which actually, now I see it written down, I'm pretty shocked at as I used to be t total. No wonder I've put on so much weight.

Anyway, needs must so I'm off to find the corkscrew. Wink

Flip · 01/03/2006 17:30

I was told you were here! Wink Could have guessed for myself really. I should be here but have no intention of cutting down or giving up. Life's to short.

ChampagneandNappies · 01/03/2006 17:30

Ladies I thank you! However tis that time of the evening when I have to rescue my children from the garden (I live in wamer climes) and start the evening round of feeding, bathing and giving milk. Also as my Nanny calls it, to start my Mummy's milk - sorry girls but it will take me a while to get out of the habit! It's been a jolly good day considering this is only my second day on MN. Hoping to catch up with you all again . Enjoy your evening - and JanH keep the Nurofen handy for tomorrow.

One last thing - live abroad away from the tax man then you don;t have to worry about the cost of wine - which is generally cheaper anyway - sorry!

OP posts:
Hulababy · 01/03/2006 17:43

We have a bottle of wine between us about 4 times a week. Other times we might have a glass of lager/beer, dry sherry, port, Baileys, etc.

tribpot · 01/03/2006 17:44

C&N, as I understand it, they do have tax men abroad as well Grin But the tax man doesn't go after booze in quite the same way. Ah for the days of Chile, where you could get a fabulous bottle of red for £1.50.

ChampagneandNappies · 01/03/2006 17:48

Tribpot - not here they don't! Anyway have a good one x

lapsedrunner · 01/03/2006 19:19

C&N I too live away from the tax man...the wine here is v. cheap and so hard to resist! I'm totally in tune with what you are saying Blush.

WideWebWitch · 01/03/2006 20:18

God, I'm worrying about this liver thing now. How would you know if it was only functioning at 20% and you were about to drop dead? Or wouldn't you, is that the point he was making? This thread is making me want to carry on being virtuous!

blueteddy · 01/03/2006 20:25

Too much!! I normally have a couple of big gblasses of wine a night & drink far more at weekends!
I have had2 drink free nights this week & am very proud of myself! However it has all gone to pot tonight!!
Will cut down one day, when life gets a bit less stressful!

BudaBabe · 01/03/2006 20:45

Have been drinking far too much. Usually a glass or two (or more!) of white wine while cooking and then a bottle of red between DH and I with dinner and then if DH had a whiskey and wine was empty I would open another ( may just have one glass from this).

But haven't had a drink since Sunday! Partly due to feeling far too seedy/hungover on Sat, Sun and Mon morning and partly due to WWW's Looking Younger thread. Thanks WWW!

Already feel less bloated.

Cooked a nice meal tonight and DH was hovering in kitchen and I could easily have had a glass of wine but knew it would be slippery slope. So stuck to water. DH hasn't stopped completely but just has one now when he gets home.

Have been concious for ages that it is not doing me any good to drink so much. Like others here I don't seem to have an "off" switch when it comes to wine. Am also very overweight - and as I am prob consuming upwards of 600 cals a night in alcohol that is not surprising. Also complexion a but ruddy and wanted to improve that or at least halt it.

Stopping can be done. But cutting down is prob more realistic for most of us.

ivechangedmyname · 01/03/2006 20:47

I drink a bottle of wine three times a week.

JanH · 01/03/2006 20:48

Why change your name for that admission, icmn? Should it be more? Wink

WideWebWitch · 01/03/2006 20:50

Well, that's not too much icmnft, if you meant THREE bottles every day of the week, well, that would be more of a worry. Glad the other thread helped budababe.

Callmemadam · 01/03/2006 21:25

Ch&N, Bighug has expressed my own experience, word for word! I really recommend the spicy tomato juice route - its savoury and has a kick, so gets over that sweet cordial thing, and its more filling and pleasurable than water. I get supermarket cartons and add tabasco and Worcester sauce - no vodka allowed. It really does work, but I have so far only managed to do 2 nights on the trot without a glass, but I am aiming to not drink Sun - Thurs; maybe we could have a support thread going, interspersed with horror liver stories for motivation Grin

ivechangedmyname · 01/03/2006 21:30

Jan H didn't change my name for this but for the name changing game on other thread.

RedRoses · 01/03/2006 21:42

I go through phases. At present I am drinkg very little. And only at weekends. I stopped drinking in January after NY and now I have got into the habit. Apart form getting very very drunk at a dnnner party with the deputy head, about a month ago, this has put me off drinking too much as I was a wee bit sloshed!

FrannyandZooey · 01/03/2006 21:51

C + N, I'm not trying to scaremonger but if you really are drinking to that level every night (and this goes for anyone else on the thread who drinks about the same) you should not try to stop cold turkey as it could be very physically dangerous, can cause convulsions and even in severe cases, death. I believe you would be advised to undergo a medically managed withdrawal programme if you got professional help for this. If you want to stop drinking / cut down, do it gradually, and get whatever help you can with it.

Sorry to be so heavy but people don't seem to realise that alcohol withdrawal can be fatal if not medically managed.

ChampagneandNappies · 03/03/2006 09:39

To begin with......just like to say that in the evening I started this thread (God help me) - I tucked in to what was going to be my bottle. I had a yummy glass and then went out for dinner. 3 small glasses later - that was it. Why??? Because I could see all of these messages floating around and good ol' Trev saying "oh no don't do that"!! As for yesterday I had the whole day thinking I don't want to do die of liveer failure, or anything else for that matter! I have 3 small kids, 3.5, 2.5 and 6 months. So last night I had tomato juice douesd with Worcester Sauce and Celery Salt, and 2 litres of water. The result? Did I sleep for having to get up every half hour for the bathoom!!!!!! Must admit feel better today. However now reading K&Z about withdrawals I might have to partake this evening. MN is pretty good I feel, glad I found it. Thanks to all for advice etc. I have 6 weeks to lose 7lbs, so maybe this will be my motivation for that. Gosh that one was longer than it supposed to be - sorry. Computer crashed yesterday so withdrawal symptoms from that!!
