This is thread 3 of a long-running series of posts from ladies suffering from pelvic prolapses to support each other through the process of diagnosis, repair and recovery.

Here are the previous threads:
Thread 1
Thread 2

Info from BBC Health

What is a pelvic prolapse?

As the muscles, ligaments and supporting tissues in the pelvis become weaker, they are less able to hold in the organs of the pelvis such as the womb (uterus) or bladder.

Gravity pulls these organs down and, in the more severe cases, may appear through the entrance to the vagina.

A variety of problems can occur, depending on where the weakness lies and which organs are able to descend, but in every case there is some degree of prolapse of the vaginal wall, which begins to invert (rather like a sock turning inside out).
Prolapse of the womb or uterus is the most common prolapse, affecting as many as one in eight older women to some degree
Prolapse of the bladder, known as a cystocele, is less common.
Prolapse of the urethra (the tube that carries urine out of the bladder) is known as a urethrocele.
Prolapse of the intestines is quite rare, and known as an enterocele or rectocele.

Symptoms

Symptoms depend on which tissues descend, and how severe the prolapse is.

They may include:
A sense of heaviness or pressure in the pelvis.
The appearance of a bulge of tissue in the genital area, which can be quite alarming, and is often red and sore.
Urinary problems, such as having to urinate more frequently, feeling the need urgently, being incontinent (losing control of the bladder) or, conversely, being unable to pass urine when you need to.
Pain in the pelvis or lower back.
Sexual problems, including pain and decreased libido.
Constipation.
Vaginal discharge or bleeding.

Treatment and recovery

Once a prolapse has developed, surgery to fix the affected organs is usually the only way to cure it effectively.

However, another option is to use a device known as a vaginal ring pessary. This is rather like a contraceptive diaphragm or cervical cap. It's made of silicone or latex, and placed in the vagina to push back the prolapsed organs and hold them in place. Many women happily manage their prolapse this way.

Sure - you are on the home stretch now, don't falter! Treat the recovery the same as last time, then faster will be a bonus. Two nighties, or one nightie and then pjs once you're up and about. I totally understand why you feel how you do - you've been through enough. I know you have more confidence in this surgeon, so trust them. Come and have another 'worry' if you want though - I'm not going anywhere! Calm, calm, calm. (And lots of deep breaths.) xxx

Roseanna - wishing you all the best and I will be thinking of you. Smile

fengirl1 · 18/06/2012 21:48

Oh and Sure - anything that you can think of to keep you amused! If you have someone to carry your bag it doesn't matter if you take too much does it? Grin

PrancingBuffalo · 18/06/2012 22:20

3 hope your symptoms come to nothing, or not much, and certainly not an infection. I've had loads of prunes and apricots, and have stopped lactulose today, but may have a wee nightcap of it tonight.

Surewoman, I always tell myself that these things are going to be truly hideous, have v low expectations, etc, and anything better than that is a bonus. Does that sound weird...? I took a couple of books but couldn't concentrate on them, even though they were quite trashy. Treat yourself to all the rubbishy mags instead. Things I was glad I took included mobile phone, bottled water, a bottle of cordial, a few straws to make drinking easier, dried apricots, iPod, old comfy knickers, nice gentle shower gel, socks, lip balm, moisturiser, dressing gown and v cheap slippers that I put in the bin when I left.

One thing that has been brill since I got home - feme pad gel pack things that I got after DS was born - they are cold packs that you put in your pants. The relief is amaaaazing!!!!

Thanks for your message Pip. Despite the headache, I am still really pleased I had the spinal, and would recommend investigating it for anyone undergoing this type of surgery.

Good luck Roseanna. And Nimblewoman - I'm only a few days post op, and it's early days, and I hope I don't regret saying this, but so far I am really pleased with the results already.

Finally, an update on the headaches - I ended up back at the hospital today, as I suspected, I have a post spinal fluid leak - which is quite rare. I have to lie flat as much as possible, take max dosage of painkillers and have loads of caffeine. If it's not better tomorrow, I have to go back (only as an outpatient I hope!) for iv fluids and caffeine and a blood patch. It's got a lot better, so fingers crossed that it's sealing by itself, and I'm not back there again tomorrow!

fengirl1 · 18/06/2012 22:24

I know I've missed out a few replies to some of the ladies on here - sorry. Been back to the hosp with dd1 again today and expect to be back mon, tues and possibly thurs (if exh doesn't pull his socks up - too busy with moving plans and no offers so far). Sad

3isthemagicnumber · 18/06/2012 23:03

Oh prancing -not good but at least you know now and hopefully things can improve.
Fen-best wishes for you and your dd , hoping things are on the up for you.
Sure-as everybody else has said -nightie, shower gel, wipes, books, mags, iPod,chewing gum/sweets (I had a really weird taste ) etc, and loads and loads of good wishes and fingers crossedness

Piplysmelie · 19/06/2012 20:25

Hello all

Hope all went well today Roseanna.

Tee I had a bleed as well but it was on my discharge letter what annoyed me though is it did not say why I had the bleed. I was told some blood vessels around the wound site were bleeding but not why they were bleeding. I am really thinking about looking into it further tbh. So I would definitely insist on your notes being updated

Well in my third week post op and made it to my daughters sports day today rested in the morning but it was a stuggle as I had to walk up the drive around the school to,the field at the back and then up and down all afternoon. Gosh I was walking a bit funny toward the end! Still a bit achy now to be honest. I am getting a bit frustrated at the slowness of my recovery I knew it would take a while but living the reality is a bit different.

Sure I did find nighties to be better in hospital as I wasn't feeling great and it is easier to do battle with a nightie then pj's when you want the toilet, etc. I took two and that was fine as I wore a hospital gown for the first two days as I was back and forth to theatre.

Nimble I would say although the recovery is slow I am still glad I had the op. (not the same as you anterior and posterior repair) I really did not realise what i was putting up with until after the op. I look back now and think I should have had it sooner. Hopefully you will feel the same.

3 hope you are feeling better. I did not really get out of bed the first week so relax and get plenty of rest.

Best wishes to all

Pip

3isthemagicnumber · 19/06/2012 21:56

Thinking of you as well Roseanne
Pip-well done on making the sports day, i should imagine there was no way you were going to miss that and i bet your dd loved you being here -just take it easy tomorrow to make up for it.
.It is so frustratingly slow isn't it.Reading that you have done that with a struggle on week 3 ,has made me think maybe I am expecting too much not even one week after my op.Walked around at home a lot today and even wentout (in the car)to sit outside local cafe today and am really hurting tonight so think I have got to accept I can't do it yet-even if I think I am taking it easy(know I did some funny bends and twists to get things today too ) Just hope I'm not damaging myself .Arse :-)

Piplysmelie · 20/06/2012 14:00

3 I am sure your not doing any damage. I know what you mean though if i bend down I know about it. You do need to take it easy though. I make myself as I have no intention of going through this again and you should take time to rest too.

What did your consultant say to do when you got home. Well from reading this thread I knew not to do much for the first two weeks which was good really as the registrar who discharged me thought it would be fine for me to pick up my 4 year old dd Confused .However when he left the nurse did say that the consultant does not recommend that!

Fen hope things are going better for you now and you dd is getting the care she needs from the hospital.

Best wishes

Pip

roseanna1 · 20/06/2012 17:40

Hi ladies, well that's me had the posterior repair yesterday morning as planned and just got home (2 days earlier than expected).

Pain has not been as bad as I expected, but does seem a bit variable, so sometimes I have zero pain and other times its really.quite painful. Had morphine and local anaesthetic at the operation itself (had a ga) but after that just co codamol then paracetamol.today.

Biggest issue was my oxygen stats kept.dropping yesterday but all sorted now.

So home now, exhausted and a little.sore but mostly very relieved it wasn't as bad as I imagined.

Take care all.. xx

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 20/06/2012 19:16

Good to hear from you Roseanna, glad things went ok.

I phoned up my hospital today to see how long the waiting list is and was told September is about the earliest I can expect the op. Which is actually fine, I would far rather not be laid up during the school holidays.

Piplysmelie · 20/06/2012 22:27

Roseanne So glad all went well, take care of yourself and rest.

fengirl1 · 21/06/2012 10:30

Morning all! Roseanna, it's great that you're feeling quite good but I would advise you to keep your level of painkillers topped up for a while as otherwise you can get caught out and then have a bout of being very sore. Slowly does it still though!
Just wondering if this is usual.... This morning I thought I had a very weird blood clot emerge. I then realised it is a large knot with eight threads and a loop - it looks like a mutant spider! I was a bit surprised as I was told I had one stitch left and have had several little bits come out since. Strange!

Piplysmelie · 21/06/2012 11:21

Fen sorry can not help as not at that stage yet but I am sure one of the other ladies will be along in a bit to help you.

Can anyone help me, constipated again Angry some one on this thread was putting something on their cereal in the morning to help with this could you remind me what it was, how much, how often. Any other ideas to stop this would be great.

Pip

3isthemagicnumber · 21/06/2012 11:47

Morning all
Wow Roseanne-can't believe your home already,-glad all went well, hope you had a comfortable night.
Fen -oooh not sure about stray fanjo dwelling spiders, keep an eye for bleeding I guess otherwise presume that was the 'one' albeit a monstrous one.
Pip-prune juice, along with the lactulose, fruit etc seemed to be the thing that finally moved me yesterday.

happy2beme · 21/06/2012 11:57

Hi Pip
Both linseed and flaxseed help with constipation 1-2 desertspoons is recommended. I dont take as not a great cereal person although first couple of weeks post op did take some. Movicol is defo better than lactulose and less windy IYKWIM xx In the hospital and Gp prefer movical, our pharmacist on ward said lactulose out of vogue as it was harsher on the bowel. Mix the movicol with orange juice with bits as if is more effective . I sufferred worst constipation in the world, but played around with combo of movicol and have settled on 2 in morning half pint of water/orange juice and I go everyday in morning now. If I have been working nightshift it mucks me up a bit so take a little extra to combat this. Does take a few weeks post op to get the situation sorted but as I posted before abdominal surgery will affect your motions anyway as your bowel has been disturbed and moved around this affects the peristalsis(waves of muscle contraction within bowel) which your bowel needs to function properly. Hope some other ladies will be able to add more soon xx

StiffyByng · 21/06/2012 12:26

Hi everyone. May I join you? I've been diagnosed today with a moderate to severe rectocele which will be surgically fixed once I've 'completed my family'. (I'd like at least one more child.)

What has most upset me, and I'm sorry if you've discussed this before and I'm going over old ground, is being told that my vagina is in a post-menopausal state. I've been prescribed oestrogen cream and told to stop breastfeeding my 13 month old straightaway. This has devastated me as we both love it. Did anyone else experience this? I was made to feel a bit stupid at not knowing the effect breastfeeding could have and not using the oestrogen cream.

fengirl1 · 21/06/2012 12:32

Pip - in addition to what others have said, glycerine suppositories are good for bringing relief if you're very uncomfortable. They're usually on the shelf with all the stomach and pile stuff so you can just grab and go. They're not a long term solution can help to get things moving! Grin
I do hope I'm not breeding a new species of insect - it was bad enough finding out one of the bugs I had is usually found in cow's udders. Blush

Piplysmelie · 21/06/2012 14:02

Sorry stiffy I can't help with but welcome anyway.

Thanks everyone for all the advice on ths constipation problem.

God it is so not my day I know I probably shouldn't but had another look with the mirror and realise that I seem to have a bit of a skin tag inside my fanjo by the entrance which started to bleed after I poked it.Blush. Fumming about it as I am certain this will need to be snipped before normal service resumes in that area if you know what I mean.Wink

Also phoned the hospital as I don't have an appointment to see consultant until September! Anyone else had to wait that long. I told the secretary that the registar said I would have one at six weeks. She said she would have a look into it and ask him. I really want to see him as I want to ask about the skin tag and the thought of waiting until September just freaked me out.

Piplysmelie · 21/06/2012 14:14

Ok probably really should not of poked it really hurting now.

Piplysmelie · 21/06/2012 14:24

Fen just think that should be all your stitches now you are so lucky to be stich free. You should definitely be celebrating have some Thanks and a glass of Wine.

fengirl1 · 21/06/2012 15:50

Pip - not so sure I'm lucky really - haven't said anything before and I've been waiting to see if it was just swelling as a gp said..... I have lots of 'bobbly bits' protruding at the back and am sure I can still see a cystocele Sad. I haven't been able to deal with asking yet but will when I go back for my check-up. V disappointed to say the least if I'm right as it still looks far from anything like normal. My checkup is around the eight week mark but should have been six. Hope your 'inner workings' are sorting themselves out.

roseanna1 · 21/06/2012 17:04

Hi all,

Crashed out for about 12hrs last night - think I needed the rest! Felt pretty good this morning other than bm which was the first 'real' pain I've had. Feel very woolly headed and not quite myself though even after resting most of the day and snoozing this afternoon. Did everyone feel like that during the first couple of days or is it just me being a weirdo lol

fengirl1 · 21/06/2012 17:11

Roseanna - I felt a bit 'out of it' for about two weeks!

roseanna1 · 21/06/2012 17:33

Thanks fen....guess I'm maybe being a little optimistic :O

You all ready for tomorrow Sure? Will be thinking.about you xx

Pip - I bought Dulcolax ahead of going in but forgot to take it! Consultant said if you can stay away from cocodamol and keep to paracetamol and ibuprofen that helps with the constipation part, although not sure if you're still on pain meds?

fengirl1 · 21/06/2012 19:02

All the best for tomorrow Sure. Let's hope the third time's the charm! Smile
