This is thread 3 of a long-running series of posts from ladies suffering from pelvic prolapses to support each other through the process of diagnosis, repair and recovery.

Here are the previous threads:

Info from BBC Health

What is a pelvic prolapse?

As the muscles, ligaments and supporting tissues in the pelvis become weaker, they are less able to hold in the organs of the pelvis such as the womb (uterus) or bladder.

Gravity pulls these organs down and, in the more severe cases, may appear through the entrance to the vagina.

A variety of problems can occur, depending on where the weakness lies and which organs are able to descend, but in every case there is some degree of prolapse of the vaginal wall, which begins to invert (rather like a sock turning inside out).
Prolapse of the womb or uterus is the most common prolapse, affecting as many as one in eight older women to some degree
Prolapse of the bladder, known as a cystocele, is less common.
Prolapse of the urethra (the tube that carries urine out of the bladder) is known as a urethrocele.
Prolapse of the intestines is quite rare, and known as an enterocele or rectocele.

Symptoms

Symptoms depend on which tissues descend, and how severe the prolapse is.

They may include:
A sense of heaviness or pressure in the pelvis.
The appearance of a bulge of tissue in the genital area, which can be quite alarming, and is often red and sore.
Urinary problems, such as having to urinate more frequently, feeling the need urgently, being incontinent (losing control of the bladder) or, conversely, being unable to pass urine when you need to.
Pain in the pelvis or lower back.
Sexual problems, including pain and decreased libido.
Constipation.
Vaginal discharge or bleeding.

Treatment and recovery

Once a prolapse has developed, surgery to fix the affected organs is usually the only way to cure it effectively.

However, another option is to use a device known as a vaginal ring pessary. This is rather like a contraceptive diaphragm or cervical cap. It's made of silicone or latex, and placed in the vagina to push back the prolapsed organs and hold them in place. Many women happily manage their prolapse this way.

Hi...newbie here! I have had mixed incontinence issues which I'd managed to hide from everyone for years, but in the last few months I've noticed two bulging areas in the fanjo (!) area and the incontinence was much worse and I feel like I need a poo all the time. My gp said there was slackness in the vaginal wall but never actually said whether it was a prolapse. She packed me off to the physio who said (with no internal exam but just watching me do Pfe) that I have a very weak of. She gave me an estim machine yesterday, but desn't seem too optimistic that it will help. Not sure what next, but wanted to say thanks to all the ladies for posting their stories - it finally gave me the courage to speak about this and the determination to do something about it! My children are 19 and 17, but at only 39 myself its good to know there are options and I don't need to live like this :)

Huggy The side effects from anti-biotics can be pretty bad but I don't know about the pain in your limbs. What does the leaflet say about side effects? Sounds like he was a crappy doctor. I was just picturing you standing there like that... not good.

Jackie That sounds like you've been through more horrors :( When are you seeing the consultant now?

roseanna Definitely give the PFE a go but I have to say that it is likely that they won't "cure" the prolapse. BTW Prolapse was on Embarrassing Bodies live this week (should be on 4OD). They showed what a prolapse looks like so might be worth having a look at that and seeing what you look like with a mirror esp when you bear down or cough. Keep posting on here.

Hello to all new ladies!

Huggy and Jackie - I hope you both get sorted out soon. Can I join you in the fed up club? Got rid of my uti and my stomach's behaving less like a concrete mixer now (still can't report on whether my bm's are 'normal' now as I've yet to have one of those)..... BUT I'm fairly sure I have a vaginal infection - a dr came out today (couldn't even get a taxi to emergency docs) and said I probably have but he couldn't take a swab so just left me a script 'if it gets worse' which I will have to go through the dramas of getting a taxi to fill. Extra fed up as I put the phone back on its cradle and have hurt my back too. For crying out loud!!! Sad

fengirl1 · 19/05/2012 20:09

..... Should say normal bm as all I've had are constipation followed by movicol explosions..... Hmmmf.

roseanna1 · 19/05/2012 22:52

Thanks Ben10....watched it online and had a look with the mirror. Not as bad as hers I don't think but definitely something there. I think from the descriptions I've read that its probably a cystocele and rectocele. Feels more just at the entrance rather than coming all the way through.
Physio wants me to try for a couple of weeks with the estim and then email her to let her know if I think its working. Got to be worth a try I reckon!

Fengirl...hope you feel better soon...sounds like you're having a tough time xx

Littlefish · 19/05/2012 22:59

Ben10 - I can't find the episode. Is there any chance you could post a link to it?

surewoman · 20/05/2012 00:26

Hi Jackie - I'm so sorry that you are still having all these problems because of the TVT. Really scared now as I am booked in to have posterior (again), anterior and TVT on 22nd June. Did you ever find out what the problem was with your TVT? ??? Very apprehensive about all this, especially as I have done nothing other than operations/recovery since November. Don't want to have to go through all the agony all over again when I am only just feeling back to normal energy-wise now...... Argh. I will have to swop names with IfOnly as all I can say is "If only I had not had the consultant I had in the first place who f**d things up and made me worse than before...Angry.
How long after having the TVT inserted did it start to go wrong? and do you know why?Did you have other procedures done at the same time, I can't remember sorry. XXXX big hugs to you (((()))).

Fen - hang in there, it will get better one day and at least that will be it for you and you won't have to go through it all again in 6 months time. I was the most miserable I have ever been after the initial op as I was used to being so independent that it came as a real jolt not to be able to just get up and do things. I really feel for you, so hugs to you too ((((())))) x My Mother is delighted because she thinks that this time the boys and I will be staying with her (aaargh) and I will not be allowed to drive for 4 weeks, help, and will be a prisoner!!! I shall be on MN 24 hours a day.

Welcome new people and love to all x

HuggyPomBear · 20/05/2012 07:57

Will post more later And name check, but the ABs side effects leaflet says inform doc immediately if persistent sore throat occurs. Also it says muscle fatigue which I have big time. V painful. I couldn't even squeeze the toothpaste tube last night. I halved my dose and it's not helped. Am going to not take any more and see if I can get an alternative tomorrow or Tuesday.

Ben10NeverAgain · 20/05/2012 08:13

Definitely sounds a good idea to stop immediately Huggy. I'd call up for an emergency app in the morning.

Littlefish www.channel4.com/programmes/embarrassing-bodies-live-from-the-clinic/4od

Fen Is there anyone who would be able to collect the prescription for you? Some local chemists will do collection and delivery of prescriptions. I'd want to be starting those ABs if I were you.

Sure (((hugs)))

Ben10 - I decided to take the plunge (despite anything other than the penicillin giving me colitis). These are metronidazole which I think is what Jackie is taking (and should definitely stop if she hasn't yet [sharp look]). I hope they don't have me on the loo all day and night!!!

Ben10NeverAgain · 20/05/2012 14:37

I was on them for my infection Fen as well as eurythomicin. I followed the instructions to the letter. They made me feel pretty ropy but they did the job.

Sorry just need to put this somewhere - my mum has just had a fall. Dad not at home so she was alone. Ambulance taking her to hosp. Suspected broken hip. I still can't drive and dad not a coper with house things. No other family in the country and mum not well anyway - copd and arthritis (she's 70 and dad 74). What on earth am I supposed to do? Worried sick. SadSadSadSadSad (I'm over an hours drive away anyway.)

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 21/05/2012 11:43

Oh no Fengirl what an awful thing to happen. Have they got any friends or neighbours who might be able to help your Dad out? Will he be able to get to the hospital? I've no real experience of this sort of thing but didn't want to ignore your post.

fengirl1 · 21/05/2012 11:47

Hopefully people will help out but they're quite 'private'. Dad has to go home to swap trick for car and then go in to hosp. Horrible to hear the pain in my mums voice - she dragged herself inside and called me to ask what to do.... Have to sit and wait for news now and feel so useless.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 21/05/2012 11:52

At least she was able to get to the phone, must have been a terrible shock for you all and the waiting is dreadful. Have you got anyone in real life you can call for a chat to take your mind off things? I hope it turns out to be not too serious.

fengirl1 · 21/05/2012 12:17

She's just arrived at hosp. They said to call back in an hour. Thanks for the support.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 21/05/2012 12:18

That's ok. Do let us know how she gets on.

dudrop2362 · 21/05/2012 12:56

so sorry about you're mum fengirl, now she is in hospital they will make sure there is someone to look after her when she can go home. I would think,if you could talk to them and explain that you are recovering yourself. Also there is Age UK, i understand about them being very private my mum was the same also very proud and indipendant, but social service's ect are usualy very good with them too.

fallingandlaughing · 21/05/2012 14:12

Hello all.

Just looking for a bit of info/advice/whatever before I go to my GP tomorrow.

Just a quick rundown first. I had DD 10 months ago. Early induction for medical reasons at 38 weeks. 11 hours sat on my bum not moving from water breaking to delivery. 2 hours of pushing with no progress before she was delivered by forceps (rather cackhandedly, 2 attempts and she had significant facial tissue damage). No tears or stitches for me apart from for the episiotomy. I had coccygeal pain for a while but this is pretty much better.

Routine physio check the day after giving birth was fine. Wasn't physically examined at 6 week check or anytime after being discharged from midwives 3 weeks after giving birth

So.. my vagina feels different, sort of bulgy. I feel like the back wall in particular is kind of falling in. If I push on it it feels very firm. My anus also looks a bit of a nick, hard to describe but a bit bulbous. Occasionally my vagina seems kind of achey.

Sex feels OK aprt from some occasional dryness I have put down to breastfeeding.

i went to GP a couple of months back and saw locum who said all looked fine, she didn't really look inside though IYKWIM.

I am not convinced everything is OK and I am going to see usual GP tomorrow.

Thanks to anyone who has read this far. Does it sounds like anything or just normal after childbirth? What to expect of my GP? Thanks.

fengirl1 · 21/05/2012 19:30

Falling - if you're still bfing they may say that your tissues can still be a bit 'lax'. What happens next depends on your area - some women are referred to physio first while others go straight to a gynae. There are no specific questions I can advise you on as it depends on the findings. You don't have to go straight into surgery even if you do have a prolapse, some women use a pessary ring to keep things where they should be. All of this also depends on whether you are having any problems with bowel/bladder. Hth.

Ben10NeverAgain · 21/05/2012 20:01

Sorry to hear about your mum Fen. How's she getting on and how are you doing?

OP posts:
WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 21/05/2012 20:48

Hello Falling - you sound like me after the birth of my second DC. I did see my GP after a year or so and was referred to Gynae who said they wouldn't operate but gave me exercises to do, which I stuck at for a bit and then gradually got out of the habit of. Fast forward 6 years and mine got suddenly a lot worse about a month ago, I am seeing the gynae again in a couple of weeks.

Anyway, I would (with hindsight) have kept going much more diligently with the exercises and stayed off the DCs trampoline Blush. If I was you I would ask to be referred, so that at the very least you can be shown how to do the exercises properly and learn about other things that put a strain on your undercarriage. A lot of the things are the same as those for bad backs, such as avoiding heavy lifting, I know it's hard to avoid heavy lifting completely, especially if you have a young child, but if you can learn to bend and lift correctly and engage your pelvic floor muscles/core muscles at the same time you may well be able to stave off further problems.

fengirl1 · 21/05/2012 22:09

Hi Ben. I'm ok -ish! Tum seems ok (fingers crossed) so far.... Have been more sore last few days which is ok daytime but I'm waking up every night (last 10 days) 4-5 hrs after I go to bed with it too which is annoying to say the least. I'm sure a good night's sleep would make a difference! My mum is waiting for an op tomorrow - she has copd which will make a general difficult and fused vertebrae which may make a spinal impossible. Just waiting it out to hear how she is and trying not to fall apart. Also have a meeting this week about dd2's transfer to secondary - she is vis impaired. It's no understatement to say I've had better moments.... Thanks for asking. How are you doing now?

surewoman · 22/05/2012 00:15

Big hugs Fen xxx My Mum has copd too and can't have ga so spinal is the only option for her if ever she should need an op. My Father had a hip replacement with spinal and said it was a piece of cake, no pain at all, so hope all goes well for your mother. How long will she be in hospital? Maybe your Dad has friends near the hospital that he could stay with for a bit? xxx

fengirl1 · 22/05/2012 16:46

Sure - 1 to 2 weeks apparently! Dad's fairly near and luckily my Aunty (his sil) knows now so I think that will help. She refused a spinal (because I did according to her) but op went ok anyway thankfully. My bro took my car for a run while he was here ( now back overseas) and a pheasant flew up and smashed the wing mirror so have to get that replaced at some point too. V sore today but didn't sleep well last night for worrying so that's probation why. How are you feeling now? P.S. No probs with bm's as my body goes into 'evacuation mode' when I'm worried! Grin
