Help Dental emergency...Is this normal?

I had 2 root fillings on Thursday afternoon, with lots of valium and support from mum & DH ('cos I hate the dentist so much I had hypnotherapy to even enable me to go)

Yesterday was uncomfortable but with 4 hourly paracetamol & codeine I was OK

Today however I am in such pain - the painkillers are wearing off after about 2 hours and I have to spend 2 hrs in absolute agony - I really am hurting

Is this normal? Do I need stronger painkillers?

What else should/can I do?

Sounds pretty normal - sorry. Root canal fillings are nasty ... you should start to feel a bit better soon though, if it's no better by Monday get back to the dentist.

You can take ibuprofen while you're taking paracetamol and codeine; if you alternate them it might help.

I think they are Paradol(?) I had them for a bad back

It could be that some of the nerve has been left in there.
Were you given a follow-up appointment? If not then ring and make an appointment, he should really see you the same day and take an x-ray to check that there is no nerve left.

Ibuprofen usually upsets my tummy - but I might be OK as I'm taking the codeine

I would take some ibuprofen if you can - I ended up in A&E in agony following a wisdom tooth extraction about a year ago. I am usually advised against taking anti inflammatories because of a stomach problem, but the doctor on duty said it would be ok as a v short term measure and gave me diclofenac (v strong anti f) as well as a shot of pethidine in my bum - It really really helped and my tummy was ok. Definitely go back to dentist Monday if it hasn't subsided.

The week beore Christmas I had 2 abcesses and the dentist gave me a course of AB...but he also gave me a second course in case the abcesses flared up whilst I was on holiday over Christmas

I still have these how much harm would I do to take them (sort of "without permission")

I normally feel lousy after major dental work but it is worst a few days later - had a very minor filling this week but the injection site sill felt bruised several days later. Chances are toxins will have been released into your bloodstream during the treatment and it will take a while to clear these plus it is probably very bruised. Remember had root canal treatment dyring my a levels and wisdom teeth out around ds' 1st bday , not good timing. It is horrible because you expect to feel better by now and then you feel awful again.

Have you tried oil of cloves? Sometimes I put a paracetamol tablet directly on the tooth and let it dissolve around it. Tastes horrible, though.

What about acupressure? - don't know if you're that way inclined.

I'd do acupressure or reflexology - but I'm a bit limited at 11 ona saturday

I take it you have only had the first appointment? If so, it is not unusual to experience pain in between visits. It happens basically because all the nerve sometimes isn't removed in the 1st session & the remaining nerve gets irritated. I had this when I had a RC. Take the AB's, if you haven't already. Can you take nurofen? If so you should be OK to take these at 4 hr intervals & the paracetamol at 4 hr intervals so you are taking every 2 hours.

Clove oil is good as it will soothe the irritation. I would see a dentist as soon as possible, the tooth may need to be opened & the remaining nerve removed.
