Help Dental emergency...Is this normal?

katymac · 21/01/2006 20:14

I had 2 root fillings on Thursday afternoon, with lots of valium and support from mum & DH ('cos I hate the dentist so much I had hypnotherapy to even enable me to go)

Yesterday was uncomfortable but with 4 hourly paracetamol & codeine I was OK

Today however I am in such pain - the painkillers are wearing off after about 2 hours and I have to spend 2 hrs in absolute agony - I really am hurting

Is this normal? Do I need stronger painkillers?

What else should/can I do?

For toothache, the acupressure point is halfway between the nose and the lips. You need strong pressure with the forefinger nail in a ten seconds rhythm. I've used this for about 30 seconds overall.

Health Warning - don't do it if you're pregnant, have serious heart or circulatory diseases or are very tired.

Bear in mind this is from a book and I'm not a practitioner.

This has worked for me in the past, along with painkillers. Don't know if it's just a distraction though, that just helps get you through.

Avalon - I was all set to do this....touched my lip - then peeled myself off the ceiling - it's my front tooth that has been filled

I am going with the ibufrofen (honest)

Katy, you started on the antib's yet? Chances are your dentist has an out of hours service, give your practice number a call & it should have a phone number on it.

Take the AB's, chances are your dentist would advise this anyway.

Avalon · 21/01/2006 23:50

Oops!

katymac · 22/01/2006 00:05

OK

I got the ibuprofen (& hopefully the codeine and the ibuprofen will cancel each other out)

If it's still bad in the am - I will take the AB's and phone the dentist on Monday am (cos there is no way I'm brave enough to see an alternative dentist)

So thank you all for you support

I'm sorry I'm such a wuss

Katy, AB's can take 24, possible 48 hours to work, I would say take them now & get them going. Some of tomorrow may well be spent in a more comfortable state!

katymac · 22/01/2006 00:13

2 things are stopping me

  1. This could be just post filling pain (not an infection)

  2. the dentist may need to "see" the infection on the xray - so he can decide which filling to replace (they are next to each other) - if I take the AB's he may have to redo both as he doesn't know which one worked (IYSWIM)

So I'd rather hang on - esp as I can now alternate paracetamol & Ibuprofen every 2 hrs
(except I'm only apparently allowed 6 ibuprofen in any 24hrs)

Katymac - you're not a wuss! I think toothache's worse than labour.

Hope things improve for you soon.

melissasmummy · 22/01/2006 00:19

The post filling pain may well be the cause. It's understandable if you would rather hang on,

BUT

The dentist will know which tooth it is whether you take AB's or not, even by monday, it will still be visable.

Hope you are feeling more comfortable soon.

katymac · 22/01/2006 00:22

I'm loads more comfy now - I'm really suseptable to drugs....that's why I don't drink

Katy, glad you are feeling better. RC is not at all nice. I have seen many cases in my time. Hope it doesn't keep you awake!

katymac · 22/01/2006 08:40

Sorry fell asleep - I feel much better this morning

OP posts:
katymac · 22/01/2006 21:27

OK - this is so unfair

I have been OK all day and I've just had a little nap

I have woken up with the most awful pain again - just like last night
Bu&&er - I hate teeth

Did you sleep on that side or any possibilty you are grinding or putting pressure on the new surfaces ?

katymac · 22/01/2006 21:32

maybe - I wondered if it's just worse 'cos I'm tired

OP posts:
LIZS · 22/01/2006 21:52

Could be . Is your jaw bruised too ?

katymac · 22/01/2006 21:53

It's the bit by my nose - it is quite swollen

OP posts:
LIZS · 22/01/2006 21:57

Sounds horrid . I do know that sinus pain can cause deep seated toothache so if you have swelling up there perhaps it might be felt in the teeth too. Definitely ring the dentist tomorrow if only for reassurance and advice as to how to treat it.

katymac · 22/01/2006 22:03

Thanks Lizs - I will ring tomorrow

Does sound like an infection. The sinuses don't sit over the front teeth so it is unlikely to be them.

How are you today?

Much less sore - I think I might be OK

Sorry to be such a wuss
