aw thanks all- have been over to see my dad and gave him a hug- I feel better for having done that anyway- I think he should speak at the funeral as it'll be good for him and I know his friend would have wanted that.

So sorry to hear about your dad's friend, mas. It sounds like they were very close.

Ned, I'm a TA in a year 1 class in primary and, although I had good intentions of working through my chemo, I really wasn't able to. Luckily for me my consultant gave me a medical cert right from the beginning and my Head said to just go in when I felt well. But in your case, you couldn't really do that as your class needs the stability of knowing who is going to teach them. So I would recommend getting your doctor/consultant to sign you off for the duration of chemo and, if you do feel well, just spend the time recovering. Unfortunately I didn't get through chemo very well. The first three sessions of my chemo (3 weeks apart) resulted in my getting neutropenic and being hospitalised for a week with an IV antibiotic drip in isolation. This was due to a raise in temp which meant I was fighting an infection but they never did find out exactly what the infection might have been (although I did develop diverticulitis and they think it might have been that). Then the last three sessions of another chemo combination left me feeling very nauseous for a week each time despite trying different meds. Radiotherapy on the other hand was a bit of a doddle and I worked through it although my skin burned a few days after treatment finished and I had a couple of days off to let the skin 'air' - i.e. walk around half-nekkid. My local authority paid me for 6 months on full pay and then it would have meant going on half-pay.

Off to make a light lunch, be back later .....

smee · 08/01/2012 13:42

Ah MAS, that's sad. All I can think of is take a bottle round, open it up and drink a toast. Maybe then he can talk and remember. Sad

smee · 08/01/2012 13:44

Topsy, I hope your head's not too ouch to enjoy Granny's lunch. Am sure cat napping in the new car will make it feel better. Smile

NedSchneebly · 08/01/2012 13:52

Sorry to hear about your dads friend Mas hope he will be able to remember the happy times he and P shared. . .

Thanks Figgy that's what I thought really. I am keen to get myself signed off for the duration, so that I don't have the pressure of going in cos I've said I will, then feeling like crap. My DH thinks I should get signed off in stages, depending on how i feel as we go along. I just don't think that's very fair on the school, and on my kids, who aree preparing for SATs in May. At least if I get signed off from the outset, I don't have to worry about going in at all, and they can appoint a supply teacher to be consistent for them. Going to meet with my boss tomorrow, so will see what she thinks. SATs results were dire last year, so there's extra pressure to deliver this year.

Thanks to evyone for the thoughtful messages and support- it makes me feel less lonely and isolated.

topsyturner · 08/01/2012 14:25

Its a VW Scirrocco dig . Very sporty looking hatchback .
Bit of a change from the estate car we previously had .
Think DH has dropped about 20 years in age since he picked it up Grin

Ned I think its a wise decision for both you and your class to get signed off for the duration . Even if your treatment progresses smoothly , you will be more tired than usual , and you need the time to be kind to yourself .

Lunch done , yum .
Head still a tiny bit throbby (sob)
Off for a nap drive now .

MaryAnnSingleton · 08/01/2012 14:39

ned yes, agree with the others -seems best all round.

NedSchneebly · 08/01/2012 18:38

I'm with you Topsy - definitely a viewing highlight of my week! Hope your head feeling better. . . Perhaps the sight of the lovely mr cumberbatch will help your recovery Smile

topsyturner · 08/01/2012 19:16

Maybe if he gently rubbed my aching body head Ned ...

NedSchneebly · 08/01/2012 19:44

That's quite a thought. . . Smile

Hope you had a good snooze in the car anyway!

jchocchip · 08/01/2012 20:38

Hello all, hope you all have a good week coming up.
Ned I am secondary, an AHT, and was signed off for the duration ( 7 months in total). My GP gave me 6-weekly notes as much so he could check on my progress. My school were fantastic and I got full pay for the whole time. I had a meeting with Occupational Health before I returned to work and the first term back worked 3 days a week but got full pay. As a result I have not had a day off sick since I returned, a year ago. I was told that teaching is not a suitable job to work through chemo, too many germy children! Good luck

topsyturner · 09/01/2012 07:32

Morning All

Very bad night last night . Slept very badly . Didn't get off to sleep till after 4am . Skin is so sore , I just couldn't get comfortable in an position .

Countdown is on though . Number 4 today , keeping my eyes on the goal of getting through to the last one on Thursday .

Sorry , feeling pretty pathetic this morning .
Hope everyone is ok today .
Anyone with appointments this week ?

DigOfTheStump · 09/01/2012 07:59

Dear Topsy, that's sounds painful and you are being ver brave.

My appointment is 10.30 tomorrow, when hopefully I will be told I had nothing to worry Bout and I will no longer be a Tamoxifen girl.

ElusiveCamel · 09/01/2012 08:34

Topsy :( That sounds really horrible, poor you! Thursday not too long now.

Ned Good luck with your discussion with your boss. Am sure it is all going to be fine with work.

My move is nearly all done, but lots still to sort in the flat I am staying in and some more loose ends at the house. I am so absolutely shattered, but want it all sorted before Friday. Weirdly, I am starting to look forward to the op so I can get some rest! Day full of long meetings today - will have to try hard not to sleep through them :)

marmitesandwiches · 09/01/2012 08:51

Topsy poor you! That sounds v sore. Nearly there now. Sending hugs.

Ned hope you manage to get your work situation sorted out. Am sure it will be a relief when you do.

Dig has been lovely having you here but hope we'll be waving goodbye to you tomorrow ifswim!

All well here. Sitting in bed watching tv news + being served breakfast. Slept really well last night thanks to a sleeping tablet and starting to feel a bit of a fraud! Think I'll prob be going home tomorrow am - new boob and all! Haven't actually been introduced to it yet as under many layers of bandage. Get biopsy results from op on Wed - which is the bit I'm dreading. Hoping there can't be any more bad news! Have been put off medical results for life!

amberlight · 09/01/2012 09:58

Topsy, did you get any aloe vera? I'd contact the team and let them know how much discomfort you're in - they have some good alternative creams and stuff for such situations.
Marmite, know what you mean about medical results. I'm blanking out any possibility of extra scans and results this year, though I know there'll be plenty Confused

MaryAnnSingleton · 09/01/2012 10:48

oh poor sore topsy - hope the soreness eases soon,it isn't nice.
dig whatever your results -and I hope they are all clear-you are very welcome to stick around with us SmileI am having stitches out tomorrow, but that's not really an appointment.

MaryAnnSingleton · 09/01/2012 10:48

oh and lots of luck ned with work discussion and camel with getting sorted

OP posts:
smee · 09/01/2012 11:02

Oh Topsy. Definitely talk to them about dressings, etc. My lot had all sorts which helped. Won't be long before it's healed though. I know it's wretched, but it really does go quickly. xx

Camel, well done on the move. You must be exhausted though. Maybe it's good in a way as you're keeping busy.

Ned, sounds like decision made. Hope the school are generous and understanding when you tell them. If not, we'll send the girls round and reveal our scars. That'll sort 'em. Grin

Dig, I so hope you won't need us after tomorrow, but as MAS says either way you don't have to go. Smile

Marmite, when's the great unveiling then? It's quite a moment when they take off the bandages. Just so you know, I'd bet the scar/ stitches will be quite livid. Mine took a good few months before they faded down, so don't think you'll be stuck with them like that forever.

MAS, how's your dad? Has he decided whether to speak at the funeral or not? And did your friend have her offer accepted?

Just drifted through a long coffee with a newly pregnant friend. An August baby to look forward to. Smile

topsyturner · 09/01/2012 11:21

Got some lovely cooling gel pads from the hospital today .
Sheer bliss when applied !

MaryAnnSingleton · 09/01/2012 11:31

oh well done topsy -that should help.
smee don't know whether offer has been accepted, but I'm thinking one of the 2 houses she's seeing this week might be better.
I'm sure dad will speak- P would have wanted him to and it will help dad too. Am not sure what I should wear to the funeral - haven't been to one for a while...
