Coming up to my first smoke-free year. I was one of those who couldn't imagine ever not smoking.

It's the best thing I've ever done (I'm fitter, healthier, richer, smell nicer!) and YOU can do it too. AND your children will be happier! Good luck to you all Smile

working9while5 · 02/01/2012 00:37

Three years for me this year too! Woop woop! Be careful with those microtabs. I got very addicted to them ;)

maristella · 02/01/2012 02:36

Don't give in! I am quitting in the morning (hence my late night...)
I quit a few years ago and found that my mind was much more active as a non smoker, so finding a way to unwind will help you

iscream · 02/01/2012 02:53

Good luck! You can do it!
Your doctor can give you a medication to help with the anxiety (jitters, foul mood, sleeplessness).
One day at a time, in a few weeks the withdrawal will not be as bad as it is now.
I quit after 22 years smoking.
Think of your children at your bedside as you are dying of lung disease, and weeping at your funeral. That will re enforce your will to quit. It did me!

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/01/2012 03:17

I quit 10 years ago. My top tip is take up a sport. I took up Kickboxing and went from wheezing, coughing shitness to awesome Buffy style fighter in three years. I could do 40 press ups after a year. Just after I gave up smoking I could do half a press up, just down to the floor!

Good luck everyone, you'll be great!

boschy · 02/01/2012 07:51

me too, I'm joining now! stopped at 01.30 on 1.1.12, so I've done an amazing 30 hours so far.
what gets me is how BORING things seem without knowing I can go and have a fag break....

rogersmellyonthetelly · 02/01/2012 09:15

I went cold turkey from 30 a day in October, you can do it!

fatlazymummy · 02/01/2012 10:07

I quit nearly 7 years ago. I found it tough for the 1st 4 months, after that it was brilliant! I was a heavy smoker too.
Good luck to everyone. Hang in there, it is so worth it.

relaxingathome · 02/01/2012 10:17

I am planning on joining you :)
I so far have cut out all my habitual cigs, morning last thing at night and am down to 2 or 3 a day at random times. but not when the phone rings, after dinner or any of my usual ones.
I am hoping that taking the habit ones out will help with the withdrawal when I finally quit on friday.
I didn't want it to be at new year and am waiting til the dc have gone back to school.
Still I have cut back from 20 a day to 20 since boxing day- will be there soon.
I am planning on willpower alone, is this insane?

elliepac · 02/01/2012 10:20

Can i join please? Currently a 20 a day but am giving up tomorrow when I return to work. Also planning on going cold turkey.

Snapespeare · 02/01/2012 11:17

I'm in! smoked my last one last night, refuse to buy any more. cold turkey here. :)

MilitaryWag · 02/01/2012 11:19

NRT patch on....last cig three hours ago AND IM STRUGGLING!!!!!

Dawndonna · 02/01/2012 12:36

I'm going to the pharmacy tomorrow to discuss it. Was going to give up on Wednesday, but on discussing it with dh, we think a full week with dcs at school would be better, so next Monday it is.
I've smoked for over 30 years and I'm terrified. Last time I spent twelve weeks in tears and put on a stone and a half.

WorraLiberty · 02/01/2012 12:40

Good luck everyone!

I can't recommend the E-Cig enough

Especially if you treat it like a normal cigarette and 'smoke' it outside/wherever you would normally smoke...instead of sitting and puffing on it whilst watching TV as that could give you too much nicotine intake.

Ambi · 02/01/2012 12:44

I have, out of necessity. Pg was unplanned, it's not stopped me wanting one so badly. Because I wasn't ready to quit, I quit cos I had to not cos I wanted to has made me want it so much more.

Bewilderedmum · 02/01/2012 12:54

Another one here! Had my last fag last night, and am on the gum. I find myself wandering over to the backdoor, and keening quietly, wondering why I feel out of sorts.

Today, I'm changing as much of my routine as I can to cut down the number of associations - going to take the kids swimming in a minute. Also, I have a strong association between the kitchen, and the back-door, and wanting a fag - so am planning really easy quick meals for me and kids for the next couple of days...

We can do it! :o

busybusybust · 02/01/2012 13:00

I stopped 4 weeks ago (40 years of smoking!) also with Champix. I have no intention of ever smoking again.

busybusybust · 02/01/2012 13:02

I should add that I've had many failed attempts to give up over the years.
