Don't ask me about biscuits...never made any in my life, but I admire the skill in others Xmas Grin

Sparkle, have a Brew. Merry Christmas to you too! Xmas Smile

Finally finished work for Christmas. Good.

marmitesandwiches · 23/12/2011 16:05

Hi again,

Good to see everyone winding down for Christmas... other than DCs who are of course still winding up - at least, they are in our household. If excitement levels increase much more, DS1 may spontaneously combust!

Anyway, I have a not-very-festive question some of you may be able to help me with: How debilitated am I likely to be after my op? DH works freelance and was originally meant to be away from 3 Jan for 3 weeks. He's trying to get someone else to replace him on the job (as it can't be postponed) and the client is very understanding, but I think it would be good if he could go for part of the time at least. My mum could probably stay and help out a bit. I've had two c-sections and recovered v quickly each time. Is this similar? Worse?? Hard to answer probably but be good to have an idea. I realsie there is also an emotional side to this - so it may also depend on the prognosis they give once they've had a good root around Xmas Hmm.

Finally got round to leafing through the Radio Times - looks like a few good films around (Laurence of Arabia, I love!) so planning some quality sofa time over the next few days Xmas Grin.

xx

amberlight · 23/12/2011 16:34

Marmite, I think that's one of the how-long-is-a-piece-of-string questions, alas. Some people bounce back in a few days, and others take a fair bit of time. If you've done well after c-sections, you might find the same this time too, yes. But I'd take any and all offers of help that you can.

topsytinselturner · 23/12/2011 16:57

Do you know how long they are expecting you to be in hospital after the op ? I was in for 5 days , but I know that's a fair bit longer than some of the other ladies .
You will probably have a drain in your armpit and one in your mastectomy scar . My consultant had mine removed after 5 days , but again this seems to differ from region to region .
I felt surprisingly ok after I got out of hospital . When you have a mastectomy and node removal they tend to cut the nerves , so the pain isn't too much . And once my drains were out I had very little pain .
You will be tired , that is mainly down to the GA .
If your mum (or anyone else) offers to help or look after the kids , then let them . My DH went to work when I got out of hospital an my DC were at school during the day . I used to walk up to the school (2 mins away) and pick them up .

But honestly , it is so different for everyone . Don't feel like you have to be superwoman . Let people help .

OneInEight · 23/12/2011 17:09

Hi marmite, I think it is fairly similar to a c-section. The pain is probably less and it does not affect your ability to walk around in the way a c-section does but you may come out of hospital with a drain and there may be swelling / fluid retention which feels uncomfortable. I had my Mum to help me for the first week following the op but was back to doing the school run the second. Mind you I collapsed on the sofa and watched tv all the time they were at school even during the second week so it takes a while for the energy levels to get back to normal.

Happy today as the consultant I saw today was much more optimistic about getting on with real-life during the chemo. My first dose will be 9th Jan.

Packing up for Christmas - my sister is doing the honours and all I have to do is provide the mince pies. Sounds good to me.

MaryAnnSingleton · 23/12/2011 17:36

marmite I can't comment on recovery times as my operation was a lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy. Not had a c section either.
I have just baked my spiced biscuits - made the dough last week and froze it-ditto with cranberry and chocolate cookies -will bake them on 27th for BIL who is coming to collect mil and will stay over.
Will see if I can find recipe online........

cranberry & chocolate snow cookies they are easy peasy, but require lots of cranberries so you might have to brave the shops

OP posts:
topsytinselturner · 23/12/2011 18:13

So a jar of cranberry sauce won't cut it ... ? Grin

Grin at your new profiles. Topsy, I just knew you looked like that. Grin

Marmite, I've had two mastectomies - one for Cancer with nodes cleared, then one elective as a preventative measure. Both times it was honestly the General Anaesthetic which proved the most debilitating. The nodal clearance is weird as they end up damaging nerves, so your arm feels weird and tight, but the actual mastectomy is surprisingly not too painful. I'd say give it a week or two and you'll feel none too bad, but don't underestimate the emotional side.

Those cookies look mighty good, but I still haven't made the Christmas Cake. G'ah, b'ah and grr. Am off to pour a glass of red and set to it now. DH is laying odds it will still be cooking on Christmas Day. Xmas Grin

jchocchip · 23/12/2011 22:38

Phew finally got home. Done a bit of food shopping on the way but will still have to go out tomorrow morning to finish. Nighty night. will catch up tomorrow.

KurriKurri · 23/12/2011 22:46

Hi all, - just had a session wrapping presents. We haven't bought much this year - funds have been a bit tight, so I've had fun fancying them up a bit with curled paper and bows.

I must also say thank you so much to whoever nominated me for a secret santa (I assume it was someone from this thread Smile) - I had a beautifully wrapped gift in the post a couple of days ago - so exciting, it really made my day, so much love to the little thread-angel who put my name forward.

Marmite - I'd say assuming no complications (like infection or lymphodoema) you will start feeling reasonably healed after about two - three weeks. I've had abdominal ops. and IME they take much longer to get over than my mastectomy did. I don't drive, so I can't help on when it's comfortable to get behind the wheel again.
As others have said - be aware that you may feel emotionally exhausted as well as physically after your op. - But you may also feel a sense of relief, - everyone is different Smile

Smee - I iced my cake today, but I think the icing was a bit sloppy (as proved by DD shouting 'mum the icing is escaping from the cake' Grin) I had to sort of mix in a bit of icing sugar with a knife on top of the cake to thicken it - as you can imagine it looks pretty professional ! - oh well no one likes the icing and marzipan anyway do they?

OneInEight - I'm glad the consultant was more reassuring for you this morning Smile

MAS - biscuits sound yummy, DS's partner made me a hamper which she brought over today, and she'd baked some gorgeous orange spiced biscuit - they are really nice, - I'll get the recipe from her and share it with you all if I can.

Oh and grrrr - I had a photo of my Dad copied and enlarged to put in a frame for DS for Christmas, - and I've just found the frame I got is too small, - I'll have to get another one tomorrow.

KurriKurri · 23/12/2011 22:46

night night jane Smile

MaryAnnSingleton · 23/12/2011 23:24

What a nice present for ds kk - hope you find a frame to fit.
Am off to bed in a sec- dh has just rung from his mum's to say goodnight.

Ilovegeorgeclooney · 23/12/2011 23:35

Hello all, Marmite I had a mastectomy and nodes, had the op at 4pm on Mon and was home by 11.30 am Tues. Mind you that was a lot more about wards being closed because of infection than my condition. In general I would say you would need someone about for 3 weeks, it took me that long to be able to drive any distance.
I want to wish all a Happy Christmas and a positive New Year. On a personal basis this has been a really shitty year but one of the few upsides has been the support all you lovely people have generously given. Thinking of you all........btw just discovered the loveliest drink prosecco and Cointreau! Let that be my pressie to you all!

MaryAnnSingleton · 24/12/2011 08:45

ILGC raising a glass to you and your family, especially dd for a healthy and happy Christmas and recovery in 2012 ! (am actually drinking coffee and eating toast but wine later !)

off later to spruce up the bathroom in parental house- their cleaner has been off ill this week- always tricky as mum says she's cleaned it but (and this sounds awful) not to how I would do it- I want everything to be nice for MIL and I suppose it's my way of keeping things in control..my parents think I'm too hygienic of course, but... I really can't help it. Will do it before they notice so no one is offended. Gah !

topsytinselturner · 24/12/2011 09:49

Morning All

Sent DH out to the supermarket at 7am with a list of last minute things forgotten . Think he is now at his mothers house .
Making cookies with DD later , then making a banoffee to take to Grannys tomorrow .
Can anyone take my kids for an hour so I can wrap the last pressies ???

MAS my DH always says things like "I have cleaned the bathroom" and it fills me with dread , as I know I will have to go in there after him and clean the stuff he has missed !

Wishing everyone a peaceful Christmas and a healthy New Year x

MaryAnnSingleton · 24/12/2011 09:58

indeed topsy -my mum can't see the things I notice Xmas Grin
Good luck to dh in supermarket and have fun with baking and banoffee making

KurriKurri · 24/12/2011 15:57

Hello all, - I hope everyone is having a good Christmas eve, and not feeling too pressured. I understand the cleaning thing MAS - I get slightly obsessed about things like that.

Today I have been to visit a good friend and had a coffee and mince pie at her house, she lost her mum earlier this year, so we'll both be struggling a bit this Christmas.

I have also made a Chestnut Wellington for lunch tomorrow and started to make a trifle.

Have managed to get a new frame for DS's photo, - phew!

topsy - my DH did that 'cleaning' thing in the kitchen yesterday, I said 'don't forget you said you'd run the mop over the kitchen floor' - he said 'I've done it' Hmm Grin

Smee - I hope the cake is done. Grin

ILGC, I know you have had a very hard year and I hope 2012 brings easier times for you Smile

Summatontoast · 24/12/2011 16:37

Wishing everyone a very Happy Christmas. We have relatives due any minute and are walking down to our local for a festive beer later. Hope you all have a wonderful Christmas break x

smee · 24/12/2011 17:48

Cake isn't done. Xmas Shock Will be done tonight. D'you think if I repeat it like a mantra it will happen?! And as for the cleaning... Xmas Hmm

Minor rant alert: my DH went to the market today specifically to get some things for when his sister comes round on Boxing Day. I just asked him where they are and he forgot to get them. Apparently though we discussed it yesterday it's all my fault for not reminding him today. 'tis the season and all that, so I decided only to have a minor strop.. !

Wishing all a fantastic time though. So much stress for one small day. I will raise a toast to all of us later. Here's to next year being happy and healthy and to all those on treatment, may it blast dark cells away. Happy Christmas everyone. xxj
