faux daft virtual keyboard!

Driftwood999 · 28/10/2011 20:37

In reply to, why is this thread called tamoxifen? I was initially unaware of Tamoxifen, and my first post was in aibu? I wanted to know if I could have my biopsy results given over the phone! Another query I posted in general health, I was kindly directed here though did get answers in both cases. Took me a while to be able to pronounce Tamoxifen, and at first I thought it might be a conspiracy to promote this drug. I'm sure I know better now. Hoping, hoping.

Iamseeingstars · 28/10/2011 21:35

I think I read recently that MaryAnnSingleton started the thread about five years ago and she must have been on Tamoxifin.

I agree about transport problems. I have an hours drive each way, or train/bus would be about 2+ hours, but quite often after I have had transfusions I dont feel safe to drive but quite often dont have an option. I am finding that people who offer to help dont really want to drive me to hospital and then have the waiting around especially when sometimes it might be an hour or it might be all day.

Hugs to you all

topsyturner · 28/10/2011 21:52

I have a good and regular bus service from where I live (approx 15 minute walk from my house to the bus stop though) . Is this do-able for the 5 days per week rads sessions I will be having ?
I suppose what I am really asking is does rads take it out of you the way the chemo sessions do ?

Don't want (or think DHs bosses , as good as they have been , will appreciate it) DH taking every morning off for how ever long my rads will be for .

How long is it normally for ?
3 weeks or so ?

Starting to get shakey as I hadn't bought anything today . But as the faux fur coat is going back I went ahead and ordered a bright red woolen coat from Tesco - 25% off ladies !

See I'm not all about Kurt Geiger , can do supermarkets too !

Got a roaring turf fire going here . DH is watching some crap on tv about helicopter gunships . See what happens when I leave him in charge of the remote ? Grin

What does the weekend hold for you all ?
Tomorrow morning I have to wait in for the nurses . DH has an opticians appointment in the afternoon . And in the evening we have another Halloween party to go to .
Sunday lunch at Grannys as per usual .
And at some point I want to squeeze a visit to Ikea in . Want kitchen storage jars for cereal etc .

topsyturner · 28/10/2011 21:56

I think the name Tamoxifen 1 to 15 is a great catch all name for our thread . I know very few of us are on or likely to be on Tamoxifen . But I think it's catchy Grin

And I wouldn't want to think that ladies who have other types of cancer than breast thought they couldn't come on here and speak about their problems .

Although I am worried about how quickly we are zipping through the numbers ! Can't wait for "Tamoxifen the Trillionth" Grin

janechocchip · 28/10/2011 22:00

Topsy I've not done chemo so can't really compare but as I understand it tiredness is more likely towards the end of treatment. Had my second dose today involving shopping for a couple of hours first and I'm still awake..... :)

janechocchip · 28/10/2011 22:04

and I only found the thread 'cos I googled tamoxifen whilst newly prescribed and angst-ridden ...

topsyturner · 28/10/2011 22:05

Excellent jane . Sounds like I should be able to keep up the shopping habit [grin ] Or at least till I run out of money !

Figgyroll · 28/10/2011 22:10

I got incredibly tired during the middle week of my three weeks radiotherapy and, by the third week, was practically on my last legs and dragging myself to work in the mornings. But I tried to pace myself, made sure I had a power nap when I got home at 12.30 and before my rads session, which helped immensely. I think you'll be okay going on the bus Topsy - just make sure you don't nod off and miss your stop. Grin Tbh, the radiotherapy team were such a lovely bunch of friendly people, once I got to the hospital, I looked forward to seeing them.

Iamseeingstars, if your friends have offered to take you, could you make some sort of rota and, if you have 5 friends, then they only need to take you once a week. I'm sure they won't mind and it will save you so much time. You can only ask.

Well done Jane on getting through your second session and including a shopping trip too. I swear retail therapy should be available on prescription Grin

janechocchip · 28/10/2011 22:35

Of course I'm not at work at the moment and as my rads are at 6pm, I can have a lie-in in the mornings and I'm sure that will help! I know I am going to be exhausted when I go back to work full time after my rads finish...

It is going to be really expensive because I don't normally shop in Leeds and I already have a list of things I need to buy there!

MaryAnnSingleton · 28/10/2011 23:07

This thread has been going for 2 years, just over- my anxieties about whether I should take tamoxifen were the reason and it's just continued from there !

OP posts:
MaryAnnSingleton · 28/10/2011 23:11

Btw- I illustrated a book during my radiotherapy-it was helpful to be working, though the travelling and waiting took a big chunk out of the day (the car would come usually at 10 or 11 and it was a 50 minute drive, unless we had to pick up other people which meant a bit longer) I was very low emotionally after rads finished-I think everything stopping was quite a shock -this is quite common though. My skin was quite badly burned but dressings really helped and it healed quite quickly.

Hello all, Just got back, I'll catch up tomorrow. A quick glance tells me to shout hooray for 14k - I am so very pleased for you, what a relief Smile

Welcome to oneineight and cat, so sorry you are going through all this, but hope we can offer a bit of support and hand holding.

Ledkr - we have met elsewhere on the board and know you to be a wise and sensible woman Smile - you are very welcome here of course, I'm afraid I don't know anything about your particular query, - I know one woman who has had to stop her hrt since her DX, and another who had her breast +ovaries removed because of family history, but she was past menopausal age and I don't think hrt came into it for her. (sorry, that's no help at all)

I had a nice time in Liverpool, will def. go back for a proper visit another time.
Dad OK as far as I know - mum didn't phone, so I'll ring in the morning for an update.

Special hello to ILGC, and much love to your wonderful DD, and to Earth - lovely to see you.

Santa's elves have visited me too, how incredibly kind and thoughtful, I am very touched Smile

Love to all - will read through properly tomorrow. xx

topsy...i found that on chemo not only was i tired but my body was tired everything was so much effort but then i had alot of trouble with my bloods. on rads i got tired but the kind of tired where when you sit down your eyes go and you feel sleepy but your body doesnt ache and need a rest if that makes sense so its much easier to cope with but i did need a couple of hours sleep after lunch then i was ok for when the kids came home from school. but saying that i only finished rads on tuesday and i didnt get my afternoon kip today as i went shopping instead by the time i got home i felt sick and had a cracking headache so that extra sleep i think helps you big time. had an hour on the settee this evening woke up feeling fine.listen to smee and dont miss your stop i found my self nodding off on the bus and being jolted awake more than once.

MaryAnnSingleton · 29/10/2011 08:44

cat don't worry- not offended at all- I think we discussed whether to keep the tamoxifen title on thread 2 or 3 but then decided that tamoxifen was less cancery, but we can always change it if everyone thinks it might be better to. I do look every so often in general health to see if anyone needs directing to us !
waves to kk !

Morning all. Cat doesn't know about weekends either so another early start. Not quite early enough to see any meteors, but did cycle down the canal path to see the sunrise at one of my usual places. Did't go very far as I hadn't had any breakfast... Not planning much today, may meet up with my cousin later and go to see Aunty.

Time for a Brew anyone?

OneInEight · 29/10/2011 09:05

Good-morning Jane. Like you I am on an early start and onto my second cup of coffee already.

Re: Title of thread. I like the fact it does not scream 'cancer' at you, I guess not everybody will know what tamoxifen is although I did.

Surprisingly, am much calmer this week than last. I expect the tension will build up again as Wednesday comes closer.

topsyturner · 29/10/2011 09:32

We tend to wander round the other threads too , and if we spot any people with any problems we invite them over . So hopefully those who don't know what Tamoxifen is don't get missed . That's how I cam to this thread , a few of the ladies saw my initial post in general health and sent me a link . Thank God they did , it is my place to come to where I can offload all the crazy stuff my DH would freak out about if I said to him !

Welcome home kk , hope Liverpool is still standing after your visit Grin
And hope you Dad has had a good couple of days .

I could have slept longer this morning , but DH decided to text me to make sure I am up for when my district nurse gets here . She's not due till about 11am ! Grrrr !

Oh well , at least I am up to watch for the parcel man incase I get any more shoes in the post Grin

janechocchip · 29/10/2011 09:38

By the time I got my biopsy results, they were a relief. Surgeon was really encouraging and I had confidence in him. My Mil had bc nearly 10 years ago and is ok. She had a biopsy at the same time as me on the other side and her results were benign the day before I got my results. It was helpful having someone to talk to who had gone / was going through it.

janechocchip · 29/10/2011 09:41

MorningTopsy. You wouldn't want to miss any parcel men! :)

topsyturner · 29/10/2011 09:43

I swear the ParcelForce man thinks I have a crush on him Grin
Haven't the heart to tell him it's the shoes I am in lust with , not him ...

amberlight · 29/10/2011 09:49

Yes please for the Brew!

Driftwood999 · 29/10/2011 09:58

Topsy, I share exactly that thought too, that here is my place to come to where I can offload all the crazy stuff my DH would freak out about if I said to him !

KurriKurri · 29/10/2011 11:11

A quick good morning, I promise I will catch up properly when I have more time. Things a bit up in the air today -

my dad has had a stroke, can't walk or speak, is being liquid fed. He also has a chest infection, so really just waiting to hear news from day to day.
Poor mum sounds very lost, she's talking about when he comes home, I am not so certain when that will be Sad She doesn't want me down at the moment, but I can get down in a few hours.

I'm worried she will forget to eat properly - she's at the hospital all the time, she feeds dad for them, and they don't seem to be providing her with meals Angry I'm off to find some way of sending her some food, - either a supermarket shop, or some where that does ready meals she can keep in the freezer and just heat up for herself. She said she just drops into bed when she gets home from the hospital.

Sad

Love to all, esp. people waiting for results, for surgery/treatment and to our new ladies - everyone is giving you admirable advice, - I would usually be more forthcoming but rather disorganized currently, but I send you loads of good thoughts Smile
