Hello all
I am resurrecting an old tradition of boosting general health by committing to doing at least 10 mins of exercise and aiming for 10 portions of Fruit and veg a day.
The old threads always had genius titles - a particular favourite being aaah Leek out, le leek, c'est chic"

Heres hoping

I am waiting for a bit of me to fall off Guad Grin I may open a book as to which bit of me fails first.

I had two apples next to me just now, ate one and dd2 snaffled t'other. Somewhat remarkably for a child brewed mainly on haribo and bacon butties she is a natural vegger.

So are we ignoring the water bit? I rather suspect diet coke won't count. Shame really.

FourThousandHoles · 08/10/2011 08:44

This is bad

I hadn't posted much for a while and not at all just recently

I now find myself ignoring my children whilst I peruse active convos

Damn you Olivia, damn you veggers, damn you mn

FrannyandZooey · 08/10/2011 08:50

4000 holes great name
hello guad!

this is all very weird
not sure if we want to be doing this or not really, surely we all left / stopped posting for a reason?

OLIVIA WHAT HAVE YOU DONE

Guadalupe · 08/10/2011 09:04

I hardly ever post now. I only really read education threads.

Lets not worry about whys and wherefores. It's great to 'see' everyone. Go with it, man. Grin And it's Autumn [best time of year] there are vegetables everywhere. We can have a harvest festival in the hall. Do we still have a trestle table?

Guadalupe · 08/10/2011 09:12

I can't come back to manic posting but could definitely do with a burst of health and a good catch up.

I have to take dd to drama but I am going to visit the fruit market and attempt to eat healthily all day. Well, except we are going out for dinner and I think friend is cooking calamari.

I will report on fruit bounty and walking later. And water, god I am bad at water.

Babieseverywhere · 08/10/2011 10:13

I excel at water drinking, really if there was an Olympic category for water drinking I would win every time. I always carry a book and bottle of water and a spare tyre at all times !

Week Four ! You can do it, report back on how the 5 mins runs are ?

bocoid · 08/10/2011 10:57

Ah it's a vegger reunion!

Who were you blueberties? Everyone is familiar but different.

I started the couch to 5k, it was going really well as i'm rubbish at running so was amazed i could do it, but i just stopped - partly because there's nowhere good to run around my village - i kept going across fields and twisting my ankles on soggy bits. I must try again.

Babieseverywhere · 08/10/2011 11:07
  1. Raw carrot
  2. Apple
  3. Dried mixed fruits

Not bad for me at 11am :)

FrannyandZooey · 08/10/2011 11:26

C25k is marvellous, are you doing the Robcast? I think Rob is awesome although he does start abandoning you around wk 7 as I recall, I used to think "where are my motivational statements Rob? Do you not CARE any more?"

Anyway before wonky shin and now wonky pelvis interfered, I regularly ran 5 miles and could work up to 8 at a push, which I was extremely pleased with. Meant I was buzzing with endorphins for large stretches of the week, and you can eat more or less wtf you want if you've just run 8 miles :o I thoroughly recommend it.

TheThunderboltKid · 08/10/2011 11:28

Ooh it's names I remember Grin (although I am name changing all over the place at the moment in a hiding away type way so no one will know who I am). Used to be ITD many moons ago.

Have fallen off the F&V pile but have started cycling regularly which although not as good as running is still better than driving the car :)

TheThunderboltKid · 08/10/2011 11:32

Ooh and have now read backwards and see that Franny is expecting DC3. That is nice news :)

I post rather too much on MN I fear. But I do some other things as well.

Babieseverywhere · 08/10/2011 11:33

I am using the Run Double app on my smart phone. It allows you to listen to your own music selection whilst it interjects with spoken phrases 'Walk' 'Run' so I get no motivational statements but I do get much better music :)

bocoid · 08/10/2011 12:17

Yes I was doing Rob, I did like his kind of monotone encouragement, but the music was really boring - that phone ap would be good if I knew how to do that kind of thing. I have an ipod, and a phone, but I don't know how to combine them. That reminds me of flight of the conchords where they tape a phone to a camera.

TheThunderboltKid · 08/10/2011 12:27

I did Rob as well. Although haven't run for ages Blush. Would need to start at week 1 again wouldn't I?

Babieseverywhere · 08/10/2011 13:04

lol were you doubting that BE had eaten a whole portion of cucumber, a whole portion of tomatoes, and a whole portion of red onion, avi?

(me too :o)

FrannyandZooey · 08/10/2011 16:11

this is the best explanation of portion sizes IME
www.nhs.uk/Livewell/5ADAY/Documents/Downloads/5ADAY_portion_guide.pdf
if you are serious about vegging it is best to download and save to desktop

FrannyandZooey · 08/10/2011 16:13

so you see to eat 3 portions of watercress, spinach, and rocket salad, you would need to eat about 3 cereal bowls of it
I'm not saying you DIDN'T
I'm just saying I will stand downwind if you DID Wink

RustyBear · 08/10/2011 16:54

I started collecting the thread titles a while back - I missed some of the really good ones, but this list has some nice ones....

Should old potatoes be forgot and lemons brought to mind? Should old potatoes be forgot and days of clementines?

I spy with my 10/10 eye, a snifter of currants in a fat mince pie

5 onion rings, 4 cauliflowers, 3 french beans, 2 turnip tops and a parsnip in a pear tree

Peas to remember the 5th of November, sunflower seeds and shallots. I see no reason why cauliflower unseasoned should ever be forgot

FrannyandZooey · 08/10/2011 17:37

Babies Everywhere, it's a good start though! (I will not question as to whether you really ate a whole portion of raw carrot, i have GREAT FAITH that you did)

however of course it is hard
well a bit hard
we wouldn't have spent a good 3 years of our lives posting about it and our failure to do it if it was EASY

FrannyandZooey · 08/10/2011 17:38

Rusty Bear some of those are making my eyes water

I claim credit for the Smiths ones

Babieseverywhere · 08/10/2011 18:07

Yes, portion of carrot is "Carrots: fresh slices 3 heaped tablespoons "

I ate 2 medium sized raw carrots as a morning snack, so easy over 3 heaped tablespoons.

I ate a full portion of cucumber (2 inch portion) and 1/2 protion of baby tomatoes i.e. 4 and then I got bored looking up portion sizes and classes the whole plate salad as 1 portion ;)

On a serious note, I have downloaded the document you linked to and look forward to adding more fruit and veg to my daily food but I doubt I ever get to 10 real portions.
