Hello everyone, just popping in as I haven't been in for a while. Sorry about that - real life's been a bit hectic, but I personally am fine.

Hello to new people on here and sorry you've had to join us. I found this group fantastic when diagnosed in December 2009. Had lumpectomy, nodes removed, chemo and rads and have been back at work for almost a year now (extraordinary!) Good luck - especially if you're just reeling with the news and how to tell people - that's a hard phase. I have 2 Dcs - one was 15 and the other 19 at my dx. If you have any questions of me please ask although everyone on here can help and I'm not often on here now. But you could pm me as I have learned how to do that!! (At last) I also think the NHS treatment for BC is gold star (even if you have to chivvy occasionally)

My DS has got his uni applications in now - exciting and scary as I feel so close to him and dread the empty nest.

DD is still in her job and has managed a week now - yay! Seems ok so far. They're sending her to Germany next week.

A friend is having tests for ovarian cancer at the mo so I'm supporting her, pus as a few of you know I lost another friend about a month ago which really knocked me back I must say. Its taken me a while to come to terms with it even though I did not know her terribly well. The only nice thing was that the funeral was very supportive with a lot of friends/local contacts from the community round the local primary schoolwhere my DCs went.

But enough of that - I'm well and hope you are doing well too.

Who needed mince recipes - what about South African Bobotie for a change? Think it involves mince...

I so enjoyed TGBBO! Good Housekeeping had 20 favourite baking recipes in as well so I'm feeling tempted to create something this w/e. Plum crumble cake..........yum.
xx

This must be the fastest moving thread on Mumsnet :)I just cant keep up with you all.It is good to see so many here but sad that so many newbies have to join in.I do find that the spectre of 'Pink October' leers at me from the corner telling me I should be 'tickled pink' etc but its good to have somewhere like this where one can just 'be'.
Yes MAS you did see me on the bcc gallery-I'll look for you next time I'm there :)

MaryAnnSingleton · 04/10/2011 22:16

waves to sandripples ! good luck to ds with university applications and hope all goes well for your friend.
Bags of freebies do sound lovely - I missed out on that Smile

Hi everyone. Keep looking in, but so much going on.

Im recovering, feeling much better now. Still no news on a donor, thought one had been found but all gone quiet. Bloods playing havoc, doctors now investigating all sorts of new issues. it really makes me wish I had watched my diet/food intake a lot better when you know that someone is now analysing you and identifying what your body is short of or overloaded with. Life goes on. feeling very positive.
Hugs to everyone

janemacer · 05/10/2011 07:11

good morning! Why does a mention of diet and food intake make me think of chocolate? Just weighed myself and have put on a pound again [sighs]. Oh well, it is going to be one of those days. Does any one else like Lindt with sea salt? I'm sure I had some somewhere... Time for breakfast!

MaryAnnSingleton · 05/10/2011 09:08

off to the dentist to quick hello ! waves to iamseeingstars and janemacer (any Lindt choc is yum) And a very HAPPYBIRTHDAY to topsy

OP posts:
cakesandale · 05/10/2011 09:44

I can't believe we have got to chocolate already today, when I am trying to be good! Oh dear, I can feel it is going to be a bad day diet-wise.

Hi to SR - good to see you, hope your friend is OK.

Janemacer - forget weight gain until after rads finish. Honestly, there's time enough to sort then. For now, it is good to give yourself a few treats, it keeps you sane and human.

Sparkles - hope your back is OK and ds's hip has eased.

MAS - hope the dentists is cheap and painless.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO TOPSY!

SparkleRainbow · 05/10/2011 09:46

A birthday!!! Happy Birthday Topsy!

I loved GBBO last night, I wouldn't have liked to have picked between Holly and Jo, but I would have loved to have eaten everything they all made.

Ds much better today, but I am shattered for some reason, so am going to sit on settee with dd2 and kittens and waste the day away.

smee · 05/10/2011 10:46

What a day for a birthday, Topsy. Chemo and cake? Not the most desirable mix. HAPPY DAY from me too. I hope your lot are spoiling you xx

Waving to SR, nice to see you. Where does your DS want to go for Uni? Is it far from home, or not so bad? And is DD living back with you now? I can't remember.

Pranma, I think it's your mammo tomorrow? Will have all limbs crossed for you. Do your unit tend to tell you straight away, or will you have to wait two weeks for results?

Sparkle, hope DS woke in no pain and is at school, so you can attend to those kittens. Smile

janem, why did you have to mention Lindt?? Not sure about the salt, but will try it.

Figgy, am wishing you a speedy rads again today. You're doing ever so well to keep so busy. Smile

MAS, hope dentist is okay. You'll need treats when you return. I have flapjacks waiting if anyone wants one. Smile

I am saving GBBO for recuperation, as it's my op tomorrow. Eeek..

cakesandale · 05/10/2011 11:02

I thought it was your op this week, Smee, I was going to ask. Eeek indeed! I hope you are feeling positive and OK about it, if it helps your mind to be easier it will be so worth it. I will light the usual tomorrow morning. How long will you be in?

Sorry - was it Smee or Sparkles who asked me about dd and Sarah Jane? You are right, she does love it, although that is always tempered with a sniffly ' I can't believe she is dead' sob these days (dd is a drama queen, she likes a bit of an emote). I have to watch it with her though, in case anything scary comes on, but that's fine with me, I quite like it myself Wink

Sparkles, have a lovely day tickling dd2 and kittens. Spare a thought for me as I do yet more typing.....

We have all had a letter from school informing us that the policy on holidays in school time has changed and they can not, now, be authorised. If anyone takes kids out it will be deemed an unauthorised absence. It is quite a stern letter to send to a load of parents who haven't done anything wrong yet. And it's poor timing for us because we are taking dd out of school on the last day of half term so we can go on holiday to a cottage which is a Friday to Friday let. I can't imagine that dd's education will go entirely to pot if she misses 'wear your own clothes and bring your own toys and do sweet FA all day ' day, so I can sense an argument looming Sad I understand their dilemma, of course, but I am not missing a day of my holiday either.

MaryAnnSingleton · 05/10/2011 11:14

grrr about the unauthorised absence thing Sad cakes...
lots of good thoughts to smee for tomorrow and for pranma -will be thinking of you both !
Smog is home and am going over shortly to see him and study the video they have sent him home with...
Tooth was painless but I am numb Grin and desperate for some coffee and a snackerel - the bill wasn't too awful either- £96 for treatment and the check up.

OP posts:
smee · 05/10/2011 11:21

Was me who asked about Sarah Jane, Cakes - I like it too. DS didn't really register the fact she's dead, but he does get scared sometimes. I won't let him watch Dr Who yet, even though he'd love to. He Surgeon said I could well just be in overnight, so fingers crossed I'll be back on Friday.

Couldn't you just take her out and say she's sick for that last day - would avoid all arguments. Ours has caused a furore by suddenly telling the kids they have to wear black skirt/ trousers and black shoes. Parents are on strike as we can't see how they can justify making us all buy new clothes/ shoes when term has already started. We bought some shoes just two weeks ago and they're so expensive!

smee · 05/10/2011 11:23

£96 is still £96 (talent for stating the obvious!). Hope the numbness lets snacks approach asap. Smile

cakesandale · 05/10/2011 12:12

Glad you won't be away long, Smee!

Dd has just started 'watching' Dr Who (though she misses half of it because she has her hand over her face for a lot of it). I thought it might give her nightmares, but i think at the moment she is too quick with the hand so doesn't see much at all Grin.

i think the parents at your school should rebel. They should have told you before you splashed cask for the new half term, or told you that it was a new rule to be phased in as clothing is replaced. Stand firm!

I think it is a good idea to have dd be 'ill' but I have done it before Blush so don't think they'd fall for it. I don't take her out routinely for days on end, but there is a cottage we like to go to that is a Friday to friday let. The last day of half term is often a teacher day so we have got used to booking it in advance thinking we would get away with it. But once before (and now this time as well) they have moved the teacher day so I am wrong footed - and it's too late, we have paid. Also it's my hypnotherapy Happy Place so I have to go and remind myself what it's like The last day of half term is a total waste of time, so I am not a total wastrel, am I? Hmm The thing is, I hate to get into a row with the school, but I'm not missing a day of our holiday. Oh well, I expect it'll blow over when I volunteer to man the Book Fair, that's a pig of a job

smee · 05/10/2011 12:40

Am impressed by Dr Who watching. My DS is such a wimp that until not that long ago, he used to be scared of Pingu! He really isn't ready for the good Dr. Grin

We are most definitely on strike about shoes. Completely daft of the school to suddenly insist. On your DD, well what's the harm in being straight with them, so her having a day of unauthorised absence? You could even say it's connected to your health - they know about BC presumably, so that could guilt them into not giving you a hard time.

cakesandale · 05/10/2011 13:07

Ooh true

I think I will be straight with them, I have no issue with having an unauthorised absence against her name, I think it doesn't have any impact on her, just their OFSTED (or LA or something) stats. God, some of them go off for weeks on end.... (which I would not condone)

Your poor ds, being scared of Pingu Grin Was it the 'Noot-nooting'? He does not come over that way in your posts. Dd used to be scared of the clown in Josie Jump's song in Balamory Hmm and of the Tracy beaker episode when they get covered in yellow paint. Not to mention the shouty instructors at our local pool because they were loud. (Now she runs down to the pool and demands that they chuck her in fully clothed - which they do, they know I am a very 'whatever' kind of parent)

smee · 05/10/2011 13:18

That Josie and her jump song. Had quite forgotten that! tbh, I never got why Pingu was so scary. He is a funny soul. Hugely confident in some ways, but quite sensitive and shy in others. He's driving me mad atm, as everything's a battle and even things which should be cute are somehow not. This morning's a top example, as he used an entire ball of string to criss cross the bathroom. It went round the basin, the loo, across to the radiator, round the bath, door, so much string that I couldn't even get in the door, let alone use the loo. He was beside himself with fury when I said it had to come down. All a bit stressful first thing of a morning..

I do like the sound of those Instructors - bet that's something she'll always remember. Grin

SparkleRainbow · 05/10/2011 13:22

Smee if your ds goes to a state school, they can not insist he wears uniform at all. The law in this country is one of parental choice, which is why school info sheets about school uniform always say "We the Governors fully support the Headteacher's choice of school uniform, and request that parents do the same" or something similar. There are also Governing Body guidelines which say changes in uniform must be phased in and parents given ample notice, which I think has to be over a term, although don't hold me to that. I do however know absolutely that uniform at primary age is NON STATUTORY, I am very cross on your behalf.

cakes, but in the holiday request as you planned, with a note about school having changed the INSET date, copied to the Chair of Governors, the worst they can do is put an unauthorised absence against her name, which effects their stats, not your dd at all. If she had a lot of unauthorised absences then the Education Welfare Officer (Truant officer) would contact you to discuss the importance of education, this only happens when children are away for weeks.

I am embarassed to acknowledge that my profession has been overtaken by mini dictators, who are only interested in their league table results, and not the individuals they teach. I would and did authorise absences for children who went on holiday, or to see an absent parent, or away for family weddings etc, I truely believe that these events meet a child's social need, build their familial links, which help children to develop into well rounded socially improving individuals. How arrogant to assume that school is the only place children learn and develop.

Right will climb back off my soap box now.

SparkleRainbow · 05/10/2011 13:24

As an aside, ds is frightened of Wolves, witches and giants (CITV cartoon series narrated by Spike M)....so not ready for Dr. Who!

MaryAnnSingleton · 05/10/2011 13:31

ds when 8 was fine with Dr Who but he is scared of lots of other things !

OP posts:
cakesandale · 05/10/2011 13:32

Gosh sparkles, that's all useful info, thanks Grin I agree with you, I really like our little school but I do get the sense that they are just box ticking and looking to their own career choices all the time. Well, mainly the head, really. It was the way the letter put 'unauthorised absence' in bold as if it was a major stigma, when we all know they will move heaven and earth not to record it as that, for the purposes of their stats Angry. I shall do as you suggest, and hang the consequences!

Smee - your ds and his string made me Grin He is an absolute riot, isn't he? Life is never dull in your house. If i don't virtually see you before tomorrow, I am rooting for you. See you when you get back x

cakesandale · 05/10/2011 13:34

Cross post. That CITV thing IS very creepy.

Kinds are weird aren't they, MAS, even when bigger. If anyone remembers Bleep and Booster (doddery emoticon) I was terrified of that. Obviously daleks too, but they still make me cringe a bit, if I'm honest.

janemacer · 05/10/2011 13:34

Now I am remembering primary battles of 10years ago. Only boxed drinks inlunchboxes... Ds has only just gone to uni and now dd1 tells me the first open day i have to take her to is on Saturday, in Birmingham. Bournville College of Art . Which brings me nicely back to dark chocolate... sorry!
