Sorry haven't read the whole thread!!

My DS (aged 2) is now circumcised - he was born with a condition called hypospadias which meant that the hole he weed out of was underneath his penis instead of at the end.

He had to have an operation when he was 13 months old and during this operation he was circumcised and the foreskin was used to lengthen the urethral tube so that he can now wee normally.

So harpsichordcarrier, even though you said "for new borns it is basically a medically unnecessary operation that will have an effect on sexual function later." that isn't always true. In my son's case it was a medically necessary operation.

harpsichordcarrier · 28/11/2005 20:22

yes JTS I have a friend whose baby had this procedure.
obviously it is different if it is medically necessary.

It upsets me to read things like it might affect his sexual enjoyment later in life (although obviously if I have my way he'll never have sex!!! )

I do worry about it though!!!!

sorry JTS didn't mean to upset you
of course if the skin was needed to resolve a medical condition that's a different story.
fwiw I showed my ex bf the article about growing back your own foreskin and he said that he was glad it had gone because it was so much trouble at the time so it obv completely different if there are good medical reasons for it
(god I wish I hadn't looked at that link now.)

paolosgirl · 28/11/2005 20:29

If it's medically necessary, I don't think anyone would question the decision - just as if any other part of their body needed to be amputated for any awful reason.

But - crikey - can you imagine the outcry if another part of their anatomy was cut off becuase it 'looked better'. Oh, and tail docking is now illegal...perhaps we could look to that legislation for advice?

hub2dee · 28/11/2005 20:34

I have always avoided these circ threads as they usually seem to be fantastic examples of considered debate at their very worst, LOL.... but this one seems to be vaguely civilised, and I feel I can offer a reasonably interesting viewpoint considering I have a CIRCUMCISED PENIS.

(I shouted that very loud. )

Had to LOL @rhubarb's bro's Enhanced Pulling Powers, and harpsichord - sorry your ex bf felt less pleasure afterwards.

FWIW, mine was done at birth, I have no idea if anaesthetic was used but I doubt it.

I have no idea if I would circumcise a son at birth; I can see both sides of the argument and, being a procrastinating turnip, I will make that decision only when I need to.

wrt sexual pleasure, erm, I believe I'm more or less normal in that department but some may have noticed I smile readily and so does my wife, LOL.

I have read of it enhancing pleasure (glans always exposed). I have read of it reducing pleasure (glans always exposed). I can't do a before / answer comparison for you, but, erm, I am happy with things 'down there' LOL.

I have read of women who found it aesthetically nicer and physically more wonderful than an uncircumcised penis, and I have read of women who find it unappealing and less physically satisfying.

There are men who are glad they've had it done, and there are those who mourn their loss.

Erm... right, I'm off to have me dinner.

JonesTheSteam · 28/11/2005 20:34

You didn't upset me hc - it just is upsetting IYSWIM!!

I just wish he hadn't had to go through with it and worry about what the future holds for him, that's all.

(Like most mothers do about their children, I suppose!!!)

harpsichordcarrier · 28/11/2005 20:36

ooh hub2dee can we have a picture

Blandmum · 28/11/2005 20:36

I was once asked the most amazingly bonkers question by a kid in a sex ed class, 'Miss is it true that having a circumcision affects your pleasure during sex?'

I had to work very hard not to LOL. After all I am a woman and how many men can give a 'before' and 'after' comparison!???!

LOL, harpsichord, there are pictures everywhere for your delectation, please imagine the very best and most proud specimens belong to yours truly and we shall both sleep well tonight.

HMof2 - no worries, I don't get modern art most of the time.

expatinscotland · 28/11/2005 20:47

K, I'm from North America, where a lot of men are circumcised (although thankfully, this trend is changing). I have to admit, I'd never seen one that wasn't circumcised. Until I met DH.

And I have to say, IMHO, it does make a difference to sexual pleasure and I'm now a true convert to the uncircumcised way .

Of course, my mum had to go and tell me - in a drunken moment - that my dad isn't circumcised. now THAT is TMI .

gingerbear · 28/11/2005 20:50

well seeing as hub has come out as a circumsee, I will put forward my twopenneth worth. An ex BF of mine was circumsised in his 20's - for medical reasons. So he was able to compare 'before and after'.
He reckoned it that afterwards was like going out on a cold day without a jumper on. Or just walking out of the barber's shop after a crew cut.

Blandmum · 28/11/2005 20:51

Gingerbear, I'll remember that if I'm ever asked that question again!

JonesTheSteam · 28/11/2005 20:51

gingerbear - LOL!!

morningpaper · 28/11/2005 20:52

martianbishop I have a 36 year-old friend who was circumcised last year and he said it is the best thing he's ever had done for his sex lfie ... !

hub2dee · 28/11/2005 20:53

pmsl gb, erm.. I've never felt a temperature issue in my nether regions (although i don't particularly like cold, miserable winters, LOL).

I wouldn't be surprised that those who have it done as adults feel the experience (before and after IYSWIM) differently than those who know no other way.

bauble99 · 28/11/2005 20:53

I was just thinking that hub's photo would have been perfectly placed in Member Profiles.

expatinscotland · 28/11/2005 20:54

Um, for him, maybe. For the woman . . . there's something, erm, missing in an circumcised man .

Maybe not everyone's as sensitive, but I have to say, I can tell the difference.

JonesTheSteam · 28/11/2005 20:56

morningpaper · 28/11/2005 20:56

Gosh expat I don't think I could do a blind test between a man, various items of fruit, a wheelie bin...

Perhaps you're A True Princess?

expatinscotland · 28/11/2005 20:56

I'm a converted Princess .

hub2dee · 28/11/2005 20:56

It would be interesting to get the stats, from a large sample, to find out the proportion of people who prefer circs to those who prefer uncircs in their mayaans.

I imagine the results would also be different depending on which country the survey was performed in and also perhaps which religion the respondents were.
