new thread here !

OP posts:
cakesandale · 27/06/2011 14:09

I have posted a new picture of dd on my profile. I'm not sure I'd call it High Concept, Grin but she is in high dudgeon, if that counts. How very dare we want a photo? It is the right way up - and that's a first!!!!

KurriKurri · 27/06/2011 14:12

Oh how cute - she looks such a little character (and a bit cross with you Grin)

cakesandale · 27/06/2011 14:18

Definitely cross - we had had a disagreement about rowing styles.....

smee · 27/06/2011 14:22

Total git vote from me too. I wonder if he'll even reply. Be v.hard to and still say no. Hmm

Great pic, Cakes. So cute and full of attitude. She'll go far Grin

KurriKurri · 27/06/2011 15:41

DH has gone to fetch DD and all her junk today, so I have made some cheese scones , I am pondering making coffee kisses, but baking makes the house so hot I might leave it.

pig-dog is flaked out on the floor, with the fan blowing on her Grin She is making occasional yawny noises.

MaryAnnSingleton · 27/06/2011 15:48

oh she looks so determined and stubborn- love it -she'll go far.

His git-ness has responded - enclose highlights of his email :

I spent years taking this project from one publisher to another until Macmillan ? probably influenced by the success I had achieved elsewhere ? decided to commission it.
You were not involved in any of this speculative work but were brought in at a much later date and paid a fee to illustrate the book.
As I wrote before, I really don?t see why you should participate in any of the upside.
If the book sells or, in this instance, is borrowed from libraries, it will be because of the concept and/or because of my name. It will not be because of the illustrations.

He goes on to say that as a gesture of goodwill he is willing to give me a 25% share of the PLR for each book...

Am thinking of my reply..

OP posts:
amberlight · 27/06/2011 15:49

Ooo, new thread! MAS, agree with the others - utterly egotistical response from the author. Grr.
PS have you seen Dave Walker, cartoonist extraordinaire and a friend of mine of a sort, is openly advertising for people to work with him on new projects and ideas? He really is a very nice chap indeed.

Hi all, been away for our wild weekend. it was wild!! We're back!
Have a Brew

MaryAnnSingleton · 27/06/2011 15:49

oooh I love cheese scones !!

OP posts:
cakesandale · 27/06/2011 16:00

Cheese scone for me too, please. Diet or no diet.

By the way KK, my weight loss is agonisingly slow as well. Weeks go by with just ounces lost Sad

"If the book sells or, in this instance, is borrowed from libraries, it will be because of the concept and/or because of my name. It will not be because of the illustrations."

  1. This proves he truly is a pompous arse of the worst kind
  2. What he says is a total matter of opinion. My opinion is that the book would be nothing at all without the illustrations and, while i have heard of him vaguely, I have no opinion at all of him - until this point, of course Wink
  3. It's all irrelevant anyway. There are regulations about this kind of thing that he is flouting.

Bastard.

As if it isn't hot enough. Now I have steam coming out of my ears.

Amber's guy sounds so much better.

KurriKurri · 27/06/2011 16:09

Well he's offered 25% that means he knows he should be offering more - If he thought he was in the right he'd wouldn't have budged at all. What is his name btw - so I can boycott any books he has written that you haven't illustrated MAS Grin

MaryAnnSingleton · 27/06/2011 16:22

yes, amber's guy sounds lots nicer !
I feel bad about giving his name & I now feel a bit wretched- it's spoiled the books for me too- fwiw I hadn't heard of him before I was commissioned, but knew the books he had done for other publishers when my editor listed them- some of which ds has..they are all about arses, bottoms, disgusting bodily functions- all with bright covers..
I have written the following -

Thanks for your reply - have you really not been approached by illustrators for a share of PLR ? As the illustrator of a fair number of books I don't think I've ever found myself in this situation either.
I am sure that your name is what draws buyers to your books but the illustration enhances what otherwise might be just a list of facts and figures -therefore making it appealing and encouraging people to buy.

I'd like to think that if the situation was reversed I would be happy to share the small extra revenue with my illustrator. As it is,you are gracious enough to offer 25% for each book and I would like to accept that.

regards

double cheese scone for me please, hold the butter -I'll scoff them as is...

OP posts:
amberlight · 27/06/2011 16:28

Good one, MAS.
Cheese scones for me too please!

KurriKurri · 27/06/2011 16:36

How appropriate he writes books about arses Grin

Don't let it spoil the project for you. He may have money but he can't buy a new personality, so his loss really Smile

KurriKurri · 27/06/2011 16:36
MaryAnnSingleton · 27/06/2011 16:42

they're delicious KK !
Have sent a short reply saying that I'll accept -my editor has spoken to him and told him that most authors share PLR and there was no point in my pursuing it further with him -take the offer and leave it alone as it won't make any difference to what he thinks - she also suggested I do some mindfulness to restore myself Grin
God, a real scone would be just the thing now !

OP posts:
smee · 27/06/2011 17:43

Scones are mmm, Kurri..

MAS, you deserve that double scone. His reply was just as pompous - imagine being married to him. Shock

DS and I have just had a water fight in the street and I splatted a traffic warden. Don't think DS will ever stop laughing.. Grin

cakesandale · 27/06/2011 17:51

What did the traffic warden say???? Round here you'd be taking your life in your hands. Grin

MaryAnnSingleton · 27/06/2011 18:17

crikey smee- did you get clamped ?

Just back from doctors- he can't really think what's up- he thinks it unlikely for tamox. to be the cause, esp for the aches to happen nearly 2 years after starting taking them - so he has given me a prescription for ibuprofen for 2 weeks to see what happens

OP posts:
smee · 27/06/2011 18:38

Grin clamped! He was amused, fortunately..

MAS, interesting the doctor thinks it might not be Tamoxifen. I can see his logic, but wonder if maybe it builds in your system, or could it be the hormones being damped down? After all, that's the point of it. Aches and pains are really common if you're menopausal due to the lower levels of Oestrogen. Am thinking that might be what's causing mine, as I'm pretty sure it's tipped me into it - could you be similar?

MaryAnnSingleton · 27/06/2011 19:04

well yes,I think that too smee-it seems a logical thing -less oestrogen creates menopausal symptoms- ergo tamoxifen is to blame ! he didn't mention the m word though...

OP posts:
smee · 27/06/2011 19:40

Seems logical to me too. Never thought I'd say it, but I'm v.much into being menopausal, as I was so strongly hormone positive, it's pretty clear that was fuelling the tumour. My Onc, she said yes to Tamoxifen's ability to push women into menopause, yes to aches being common in menopause, but then no to Tamoxifen being the cause of aches. She refused to see cause and effect. Confused

topsyturner · 27/06/2011 20:09

cakes - your DD looks like a feisty one , I love a girl with attitude !

MAS - it truly says to me that he knows he is in the wrong , or he wouldn't offer you anything ! Arse !

kk - my pig-dog ate the last cheese scone you lobbed my way , honest ! Can I have another one ?

My pig_dog is lying full length across my living room floor , looking like a very hairy rug .
He has collapsed because he has just filled his belly with tuna , strolled over to me to say thankyou for the tuna , and burped in my face !!!!
Git Grin

KurriKurri · 27/06/2011 20:25

Topsy - I hate it when they do that, mine has perfected the 'thank-you' burp too. She has also perfected farting very loudly, then staring accusingly at DH Grin

MAS - I am convinced of the tamoxifen-> menopause-> aches and pains link too, I am very menopausal (its hot flush city here), and quite achy too.

Well done Smee on getting the traffic warden Grin

I hope everything went well for Pink today - fingers crossed for a trouble free cycle this time.

MaryAnnSingleton · 27/06/2011 21:19

whatever the cause it's not v nice !
I may need to make some cheese scones, now the idea is in my head. I made mini ones for my strawberry tea with lots of cayenne which I loved, though dh not so keen. The best ever were from Cranks -wholesomely wholemeal but still truly fab.
We ate supper outside again while Celeste frolicked in the grass.
Hope all is well with pink too
