brand new shiny thread....our tenth !

OP posts:
cakesandale · 15/06/2011 09:48

I'll have one, thanks.

Blimey amber your family is really, really interesting. I hope the end is in sight problem wise, and that ds's sight gets sorted once and for all so he can keep on living life to the full.

KK - why no car? Did it not pass the MOT? How's the fridge? What did you make for tea? So many questions....

off to see Mortimer...

KurriKurri · 15/06/2011 09:50

Holds out Brew me please Grin

gosh - what a lot you have all been through, I think you are right you have to try to put it all behind you and carry on - maybe you've had your lifetime share of troubles compacted into one year! - It can only get better Smile

You strike me as a pretty determined person who deals with things as they come along and just gets on with it.

Your DS sounds like a talented lad, he must be a very good rugby player. I hope everything works out well for him - with his eye problems and for his exams too Smile

I'm glad the Tax. is proving better for you than the FEC.

KurriKurri · 15/06/2011 09:55

Oh no Cakes - it didn't pass the MOT - according to the mechanic it 'needs a few things done' - but we haven't had a price yet (when we do I shall put my fingers in my ears and go 'la la la')

On the good side - the fridge seems to have recovered, I think it must have been a blocked drain hole - it just took it a little while to cool down properly.

For tea - well DH was home late and we couldn't really be arsed to cook in the end, so we had quorn sausages in wholemeal buns (I mention that to make it sound healthy Grin) and a bit of salad. Followed by bananas and yogurt. At least I didn't have to go down the 'cottage cheese, yogurt and bean pate surprise' route Grin

cakesandale · 15/06/2011 10:00

Mortimer is lovely. I am really quite jealous, he sounds such a character. I like birds but dh wouldn't let me have one unless there was a reason such as this. An injured birdy i could probably get away with. An injured pigeon made its home in my greenhouse once - and I had high hopes, but when i took it to the vet's it turned out to be a racer with a phone number on its wing, and it had to go home Sad

cakesandale · 15/06/2011 10:03

Glad the fridge is working again, good call on the tea front, the sausages sound my far the nicer option Grin

Shock over the car. What a total sod. I hope it is little bits and pieces, not big ones. It's always such an expense, and usually at the worst possible time cashflow wise as well.

KurriKurri · 15/06/2011 10:09

yes its a bugger - and we probably won't get it back until Friday or Saturday. Which is a pain because I've got quite a few things on that I can't cancel, - wouldn't be so bad if the buses weren't rubbish.

MaryAnnSingleton · 15/06/2011 10:11

amber you certainly have been through the mill with everything- you sound amazingly resilient -really hope things look up from now on.
How pissy about MOT - more expense- grr,but pleased to hear that fridge is behaving.
I hung on the phone from 8 this morning and got an appointment for 9.30 with nice doctor -I saw him last summer with cracked rib- he says it could be tamoxifen (!!) but odd as it had started coming up to 2 years after starting it- he said he didn't really know and has ordered a blood test. So we'll see what's what I guess. Meanwhile paracetamol regularly. Am very bad with blood tests,so will have to gird myself.
Really hope all is ok with topsy- have been sending vibes...

OP posts:
cakesandale · 15/06/2011 10:18

Oh dear, I know a blood test isn't a walk in the park for you, MAS. Time for loin girding indeed. At least he is being careful. There are a lot of viruses around at the moment, too.

Total pisser about the car KK. It's like your arm has been cut off when it's not there.

KurriKurri · 15/06/2011 10:27

oh - blood test is a bit of a pain if you are not god with these things MAS Sad - but at least it will give you some answers, and good that he's being careful. Have a Brew and one of Amber's ginger thins Smile

KurriKurri · 15/06/2011 10:28

when I say God - I mean good Grin

MaryAnnSingleton · 15/06/2011 10:35

ginger thin will be most acceptable

OP posts:
cakesandale · 15/06/2011 10:35

Apparently it's much the same thing, KK Grin

cakesandale · 15/06/2011 10:36

Munch

SparkleRainbow · 15/06/2011 10:39

It is good the dr is being thorough MAS, do you have to go to the local hospital for them, or do they do it at the gp surgery? I bet it could be a virus, cakes is right there are loads around at the mo.

Amber you certainly know how to juggle life's little dramas, and you have had a lot of them! Is you ds still able to play rugby, or has he had to take a break? I love the idea of his european tour, I bet all his friends are very Envy I am glad to hear your dh has made such a good recovery, wow what I lot you have all had to deal with, and are still dealing with. I will have a Brew with you.

Kurri - sorry about the car, they are essential but such a drain financially, I need to get the cooling system in mine fixed, and my window is broken and won't go down, so we are baking in the car with the heat on, no windows open.....I look like I have just got out of the sauna every time I get out of the car. Can't take it in though at the mo, we are a bit strapped for cash after buying all the paving, dh is away a lot and I have to have access to car incase of emergencies with ds.....no buses here at all, and a five mile walk to the nearest one. So looks like we will be enjoying the sauna for a while yet Wink

How about a couple of bantum chicks, if they turn out to be hens and not cockerels to satisfy your bird caring need Cakes....they are mighty cute, and not really enough on them meat wise to eat Wink

SparkleRainbow · 15/06/2011 10:43

Ooo are there any calories in virtual ginger thins? I had lost a tiny tiny bit of weight according to the scales this morning (probably just a fluke emoticon needed) and don't want to blow it all now, but ginger things sound good!

SparkleRainbow · 15/06/2011 10:44

thins not things......gah!

cakesandale · 15/06/2011 10:47

No calories at all! have another! Congratulations on the weight loss, am sure it is no fluke.

Dd would love chickens. She is after some of those rescue ones. We have thought about it but we go away a lot and don't want to pin responsibility for anything else on our dear neighbours. Otherwise I'd be there. In an ideal world I'd have all the Ds - ducks, dogs and donkeys.

MaryAnnSingleton · 15/06/2011 10:47

ginger thins make you thin !
cars are a horrendous drain financially but I'd be completely lost without my Charles.
Blood test is at surgery so not far to stagger home afterwards.

OP posts:
amberlight · 15/06/2011 10:51

Sparkle, yes, no calories at all in the virtual ones, although research yesterday shows that if you think a food is really bad for you, you eat less of it - so in real life if we are told foods are filled with calories and fat and really naughty, it works better than being told they're healthy and good for us. Weird but true.

Yup, ds still plays rugby. He has nifty contact lenses that restore most of his sight that side. OK, there was the incident where he tried to score a try with the Captain's boot instead of the rugby ball, but we'll gloss over that Grin

KK arrgh re car! And re yours too Sparkle.

We have a dog, cat and horse. All rescued. That keeps us busy too!

cakesandale · 15/06/2011 11:09

Rescues are the very best. Our old rescue dog was the best animal on the planet, ever. Fact - at least to dh and me Wink

Amber -Grin re the boot incident. Could happen to anyone in the heat of the moment.

MAS your car is called Charles???? What is he? I am thinking something French. Mine is called Harry (the Honda)

KurriKurri · 15/06/2011 11:16

Grin at the boot-try.

I am jealous of all these animals. In an ideal world I would have chickens, and goats (plus a selection of dogs) but it's not practical at the moment. Maybe we will move somewhere with a bit more land when we hit our sixties Grin - I've got room for chickens here and I keep dropping large hints to DH, but he's not terribly keen.

If our car had a name, it would be a rude one atm Grin

MaryAnnSingleton · 15/06/2011 11:18

ah yes, rescue critters are tops- my cat Wilfrid was wonderful in every way and my parents had a dear rescue dog too.
Charles is indeed French -a Citroen C3- so is pronounced the French way sometimes. Dh drives a Citroen Xsara Picasso called Victor.

OP posts:
amberlight · 15/06/2011 11:25

Our cars are called Flora (the (t)rusty Land Rover), and Henry, Ye Olde badly-mannered Jag. Both spend much of their lives being stared at by mechanics in an expensive way.

MaryAnnSingleton · 15/06/2011 11:29

[grin]@amber !

OP posts:
KurriKurri · 15/06/2011 11:35

DH just phoned - £213 pounds for the car. Not as bad as we thought, but not great. Nothing major wrong with it though - just bits and bobs really.

Amber - I know that mechanics' stare (sometimes accompanied by tutting, and sucking the teethGrin)
