ivykaty44 · 13/02/2011 20:07

I have been dx with Graves through an antibody test, but am a long way off having surgery or RAI.

Sorry to hear your feeling anxious and moody - have you spoken to your gp about this? Are you taking beta blockers, as they help with those type of feelings?

OP posts:
saramumof4 · 13/02/2011 20:41

Im not takin beta blockers an not spoken 2 gp yet i dont know how 2 aproach him about it i think its cuz im scared cuz i also av retinal pigmantosa that causes blindness an i av heard that graves disease can also cause sight problems like pressure an swellin at the back of the eye which i was avin mri scans for 8 months ago cuz they thought it was a brain tumour but thankfully it wasnt but they stil neva gave me a reason 4 the swellin an pain i get behind the eyes sorry if im goin on xx

eddiemccready · 14/02/2011 21:56

Sara I have graves and have been having an awful time with my eyes.As I understand it, the eye pain is a result of the antibodies which attack your thyroid also attacking your eyes. I am seeing an eye specialist that my endo arranged for me to see. You should speak to your gp about seeing someone specifically for eyes.

Just signing on... was diagnosed with hashimoto's thyroiditis in 2004 and have been on thyroxin ever since. I am on 150ucg daily at the moment, but that might change soon, as i have been having loads of hyper complaints: palpitations, feeling hot, dry skin, thirsty, weeing all the time, shaky, headaches etc. I am also being tested for diabetes, anemia and liver and kidney function. Will hear the results tomorrow.

Just wanted to get back to something Ivy mentioned about vitamin D and autoimmunity. This made me wonder if any of you -like me- feels worse in winter than in summer? I have noticed that the dose of thyroxin I need to feel well, seems to fluctuate during the year and is higher in winter than summer. During the summer months the sun takes care of synthesis of vitamin D in your skin; yes even in England Grin.

I had found this, sorry if I already linked to this one

saramumof4 · 15/02/2011 08:58

Thanx eddie i am under an eye specialist 4 my retinal pigmontosa but its just playin on my mind weather the swellin an pain at back of my eyes is linked 2 the thyroid problems. I think im in a situation where im petrified 2 spk 2 docs cuz everytime i go im bein diagnosed with somethin new which most is already in my family history if u get wot i mean lol xx

Honneybunny · 15/02/2011 19:49

thanks for the link Ivy.

i had my thyroid test results back today:
TSH:7.5 and T4:18.8
Both high! This explains why Ihave been having symptoms that seem hypo and hyper at teh same time. GP wants to test again in 6 wks. He asked me how I was feeling, and I said resonably ok. That was my brainfog talking Grin: I have been having severe migranes over the last week.

blueberryboybaitonSafari · 16/02/2011 08:21

Hi All

Went to the doc yesterday to discuss results and he asked it they had even purposely made me go hypo then topped me up with thyroxine to give my thyroid a total rest? I was a bit Hmm but this is apparently the route the new consultant wants to try. I have said I would rather stick to my existing routine of altering PTU as dictated by 8 weekly bloods. They have agreed but will see if the consultant agrees! Pharmacist questioned me today as to whether I really needed 540 tabs in a prescription - I said yes as it was for between blood tests, apparently it is a very costly way of doing it and could I change to monthly tabs as it (along with my asthma meds) are causing a blip in their costings for the week I get my meds. I politely told him to bog off!

LibraPoppyGirl · 16/02/2011 13:11

@blueberryboy this kind of attitude makes me SO angry.

Be it doctors, consultants or pharmacists, they have absolutely no idea unless they've actually been through it and if they had they wouldn't suggest such silly things.

It makes me angry because they make all these different suggestions (sometimes on a whim) but have no real understanding of what we go through with a dodgy thyroid (no matter what end of the spectrum we are suffering from). They don't seem to realise that our bodies are being seriously disrupted by these problems.

It is us who has to suffer for their 'ideas' and sometimes, they just have no appreciation of that fact.

Grrrrrr excuse the rant but I've been through years and years of this and it drives me insane Angry

ivykaty44 · 16/02/2011 22:20

Can I ask about whether this was a chain of chemist or an independent? That is truely awful Sad

Another one checking in. I am hypo, was diagnosed 3 years ago and am now on 175 mg a day.

Does anyone know anything about female hormones affecting the thyroid? Apparently an imbalance in female hormones (esp. oestrogen) can cause hypothyroidism.

I am having my hormones tested on Monday to see what is going on there, as I think I am very oestrogen sensitive and this could be a factor.

Hypothyroid, just started on 50mg today.
It has taken a year of tests with all the results just bumping along the bottom of normal.
I have tried exercise, cut out all fluoride, kept my weight under 11 stone, but still feel like crap.
I notice the mental fog a lot more than the physical.

looking forward to a bit more umph to get through half term.

eddiemccready · 19/02/2011 10:35

Blueberry boy that type of treatment is called 'block and replace'. I have read about it on some of the thryroid websites. I think it can be very effective as its easier for doctors to give you the right amount to bring you up, as opposed to trying to bring you down. Does that make sense? It was offered to me as well but on discussing it with the consultant decided against it. I am very forgetful and you have to be meticulous about taking meds on block and replace. Im happy enough also with routine bloods and continuing on a maintainence dose

ivykaty44 · 19/02/2011 12:45

I have now been taking carb 40mg for 9 weeks, but this last week am feeling like i need match sticks to keep my eyes open, starting to feel really cold and my appetite has gone to new york without me.

had my bloods taken yesterday and wondering how thye will come back...?

I know my gp and consultant are going to do titration rather than block and replace and possibly now I need to be taking less carb?

OP posts:
eddiemccready · 19/02/2011 12:58

you sound like you've went a bit hypo katy. I was like that about october so was put down to 20mg and am now at 10mg. I thankfully have been feeling great alothough just this past few days have noticed weightloss and getting very hungry again. So maybe I've went up a bit. If so I reckon 15mg will be my magic number. But thats only me self diagnosing! Although a dangerous thing, I hav become alot more adept at paying attention to my symptoms and what's happening.

eddiemccready · 19/02/2011 12:59

one good thing though since ny carb dose has been lowered. I've noticed my hair not falling out as much! HURRAH I need all the positives I can get.

ivykaty44 · 19/02/2011 13:19

well i was thinking the same eddie, it s like i took a whole packet of anyihistamine tablets a false sense of tired..

I shall go back to my gp next week and see if we can sort something out- the consultant should write to her anyway.

Eddie did they drop you straight form 40mg to 20mg?

Hi am quite late to this thread but wondered if any of you who are underactive ever had problems with your contraceptive pill.

I am underactive and was diagnosed 10 years ago.Am on 150 mcg a day.Put alot of unexplained weight on but that was all. Decided to come off the pill to try for a baby and within 6 weeks was critically ill. It appears the pill had been masking most of the symptoms, we don't know how long for.

Am suffering dreadful PMT and am thinking of revisiting the idea of the pill and wondered are any of you on the pill and does it have any effect on your Thyroid or medication.

ivykaty44 · 19/02/2011 13:43

hi fooffy - sorry hyper myself and not taken the pill.

Thanks Ivy, sorry don't meant to hijack but it's not often you get to have any conversation or comparisons on this subject is it? Smile

ivykaty44 · 19/02/2011 15:30

your not hijacking -thats why the thread is here for thyroid issues!

OP posts:
zanz1bar · 19/02/2011 15:52

Interesting fooffy, I believe thyroid is sensitive to oestrogen.
My hypo kicked in at the same time as the menopause at 40. It took a long time for me to unpick all the symptoms and work out what caused what.
I went on HRT and my thyroid symptoms did improve for about a year but have been returning in the last few months.
Just started Taking thyroxine yesterday , Fingers crossed.
