Can I join too? :)

I have an underactive thyroid. I'm on 75mg, dr wanting to up to 100mg. I was diagnosed about a year after ds was born. My neck was swollen and many other symptoms. When I look back at ds's baby photos I can see my neck gradually getting bigger, it makes me look like a size 20 when I'm a size 12 Grin thankfully the thyroxine helps but neck has never fully gone down :(

Voddy · 31/03/2011 21:27

Hi! I had blood tests last week which apparently showed I have an overactive thyroid; I am a bit confused as I am a bit of a fatty at the moment Grin and I thought that people with overactive thyroids were slim. Sorry if that sounds incredibly dim, but I just feel a bit shocked at the news.

ivykaty44 · 31/03/2011 21:38

no you can be any size you wish to start with - then the overactivity can cause many side effects - one of the side effects being weight loss, so you may have lost wieght even a few pounds. Or it is possible that that wasn't one of your side effects and you had other side effects.

I eat a lot and although i lost a little bit of weight - I wasn't carrying any extra weight to start with, but thats cause that is how I was anyway before my thyroid became overactive - I can pin point it to the year I wasn't overactive - so you may be 12 stone and lose 7ILB or you may eat a lot and just stay the same.

Do you get very hungry? I would get incredible hungry and eat and eat, but stayed the same weight

Can I ask - with underactive thyroid / Hashimoto's, do you tend to need more and more thyroxine as the years go by?

Nonicknamesleft · 31/03/2011 23:38

Took ages for my underactive to be diagnosed despite LOADS of obvious symptoms - seemingly the blood test is a bit of a blunt instrument.

Anyway. Blouseenthusiast, don't know about Hashimoto's but with plain old underactive, I think you can be stable for years once corrected. I have been on 100mcg forever, including through three pregnancies.

Voddy · 01/04/2011 12:21

Thanks IvyKaty Hmmmm, to be honest I'm always hungry anyway - I can't remember the last time I felt full and don't seem to have an 'off' switch when it comes to food. I lost 4 stone eating healthily and running but put about 3 of it back on when pregnant. So maybe it a case of 'would now be enormous if it wasn't for the thyroid issue'.

I feel a bit silly really as I noticed that I had loads of energy, feeling like I've drank 10 cups of coffee, since I had my DD in December, but I thought that was normal - like nature gave you excess energy after having a baby so you could get on with it Blush Grin - I thought it was normal to get up at 3am, do a bottle and while it cools under the tap clean the kitchen, straighten up etc!

I feel so hyped up and it's taking a huge effort to slow my speech down and sound normal. I can't sit still and I feel very anxious almost. Is this normal do you think?

nanatothree · 02/04/2011 20:23

I have hospital appointment next week as GP not happy with thyroid blood test result showing overactive. The only problem is already had subtotal thyroidectomy 11 years ago.
Anyone got any ideas as I am a bit worried now.

AccioPinotGrigio · 04/04/2011 10:47

nanatothree - sorry I don't have an answer for you, I hope that your appointment with the GP goes well and you can ease on the worrying a bit.

I have just come back from the GP where I found out I have hyperthyroidism. He has written me up for carbimazole and to be honest I am mildly freaking out.

I hate taking meds and in this case getting the dose right sounds a bit like pinning the tail on the donkey.

I need to get informed I guess and so I am pleased to have found this thread.

crumbletastic · 06/04/2011 11:02

I like the name accio I also hate taking meds and still hate it 3 years on or so but I swallow those nasty 8-12 PTU a day as I fear more going really overactive again. Did you go to the doctor specifially because of your symptoms or was your hyperthyroidism discovered by accident?

nanatothree · 08/04/2011 21:12

Just thought I would let you know went to hospital appointment yesterday. Thyroid overactive (even through had subtotal thyroidectomy) Consultant gave two choices - operation again or RAI. Have opted for RAI which is in the form of a tablet and glass of water. No stay in hospital straight home with the usual precautions for a few weeks. Blood tests every 6 weeks to check what meds needed as will be underactive. Not looking forward to it!!!

tb73 · 13/05/2011 22:01

Hyper again! Note to self, no more babies!

My DH is not going to be pleased when he returns home to see I have eaten the entire cake his mother made! I don't know why he doesn't divorce me, it must be so hard to put up with a hyperthryoid wife! He is so kind when the anxiety (and fear of heart attack due to racing heart and palpitations) kicks in at night (why ho why is it so bad at night), stroking my hair until I calm down.

I am awful in the morning, the first thing that enters my mouth is the Beta blockers to stop the tremor and the first thing that leaves my mouth is something mean to poor DH.

Well, what goes up must come down eventually. Now, has anyone got anything to eat?

sincitylover · 13/05/2011 22:44

leonie - is Nature thyroid on prescription. And do you take 4 grains?

I am on 2grains of armour a day but actually feel rather tired lately. But could be other things - should prob get ferritin checked again - a few years ago it was 6!!

Last year armour was in short supply so I was px Erfa thyroid which is canadian. Think my last tsh was 1. something and don't know my ts3 and ts4 levels

Cheburashka · 14/05/2011 21:45

Hi everyone,
another one to join the thread. My thyroid is enlarged (checked it 2 years ago as my mum's got the same). TSH is around 3 now (a bit high but within norm) and antibodies 32 (should be up to 12 I think). Docs said tyroid's function is normal so now we are just "monitoring" and I'm not taking any medicine.
Does anybody know if this condition will interfere with me having children...? (one day, you know..) And if you know whether low iron levels in your blood are connected to thyroid?
Getting a bit hypochondric there. Confused

dottyp82 · 15/05/2011 14:16

waiting on blood test results

bessie26 · 15/05/2011 15:45

Hi cheb, I know that an underactive thyroid can affect ovulation, and some people believe it increases the risk of mc (not sure that's been proven?) so is defn worth seeing your GP & getting levels checked & possibly meds increased before TTC.

There's a specific thread about TTC with thyroid probs over in conception.

Y'know you're supposed to take the meds on an empty stomach? Do you know if it matters how empty it is? I'm bf & am finding it difficult to make it through the night without a bar of chocolate cereal bar!

posadas · 14/06/2011 13:45

Hello. Just found this thread when searching for information about hypothyroidism. I was diagnosed around 9 years ago and am currently on 125mcg per day. Had a blood test a few weeks ago and the nurse phoned last week to say my tsh is high (10.5) and has been erratic over the last several years. No one else has mentioned any abnormal levels and I've consistently been on 125mcg for at least 7 years. I was somewhat relieved by her call, though, as I've been feeling unwell for a while and was starting to wonder what it could be. Saw a new GP today (usual one is on holiday) and he ordered a wide range of blood tests to check thyroid but also other factors that might affect my general health (iron level, etc). I mentioend an endocrinologist some time ago had told me I should have a blood test 12 hours after taking thyroxyn and wondered whether the fact I was taking thyroxyn in the morning and having a blood test soon after ward could account for the fact that my T4 level is "normal" while TSH is high (ie the blood test result is showing an artificially high T4 level). He thought my hypothesis was interesting and suggested I take thyroxin at night for a few days prior to my next blood test so that the test is 12ish hours after my thyroxin dose. I will have a blood test on Monday and a follow-up the next week. Will be very interested to learn the results -- hope it points to something benign with a treatment that can help me feel better! (sorry for long post).

perfumedlife · 14/06/2011 22:17

I had overactive thyroid (graves disease), had subtotal thyroidectomy and almost died. Now have no parathyroid glands and am underactive. Also have fibromyalgia as a result of having my throat cup open, awake and without drugs, to release heaomatoma in emergency. Too, too traumatic to describle. I would urge anyone thinking of surgery to do lots of research into how often the surgeon has had to re-operate within 24 hours of op. I took this as the iodine was not an option, my ds was a young baby and I couldn't be apart for a week. I also was told this would help remove the eye problems that come with graves disease (bulging, etc) but don't feel that was successful either.

I take 100mg thyroxin and feel like death some days, fab others but that could be the fibro and meds for that.

God I sound cheery Grin

GastonTheLadybird · 15/06/2011 12:15

Can anyone recommend a private doctor who is good with thyroid stuff?

My GP acknowledges that I have symptoms but with a TSH of 2.5 I am apparently bang in the middle of normal. T4 is 11. I have hair loss, pins and needles in my fingers, and I just do not feel right at all etc and would just really like a second opinion/further tests.

GastonTheLadybird · 15/06/2011 12:16

Sorry, hadn't finished post - any suggestions would be very welcome, thank you.

Jammygal · 16/06/2011 12:13

ok guys need your help TSH 10.2 doc can't see me till next week. Is it ok to wait till next week??? I noticed someone was hospitalised at 11 ????

leapyleo · 16/06/2011 14:38

Hi, underactive, diagnosed while pregnant with DS (now 12 years old). On 100 mg/day, been stable on that for several years now. Find it really difficult to lose weight!

perfumedlife · 16/06/2011 16:05

Gaston I have a wonderful endocrinolgoist but am in Glasgow. Where are you?

The results can vary week to week, would your own GP be willing to take more bloods/urine in a few weeks again? It def sounds underactive to me. The hair loss and pins and needles are very common.

perfumedlife · 16/06/2011 16:06

Jammygal I just wouldn't wait, but I trust no one. Have you access to an out of hours surgery if the GP wont see you earlier?
