Jammy - can you speak to a GP on the phone sooner?

My TSH was 10.8 when diagnosed and I didn't need hospitalising! I have heard of people (on here) with a MUCH higher reading.

bessie26 · 16/06/2011 17:16

Gaston - could you see another GP at your practice for a second opinion?

Jammygal · 16/06/2011 18:40

Thanks for your replies ladies......I have tried to speak with doc today but the dragons at the gate puffed a fiery breath at me ;)

GastonTheLadybird · 17/06/2011 21:12

Thanks for the responses ladies. I spoke to GP again today after seeing posts this morning and he is going to do a fasting blood test (diabetes check, I think) and a full screen for many different things, and another TSH reading.

I live just outside London (and am so South-centric sometimes I forget people live elsewhere Grin) - I am happy to pay but do also have private healthcare and might be able to persuade GP to refer me to someone.

It's a horrible feeling, I know something is wrong with me but I just don't feel like anyone is taking me seriously. If GP is right and it's not thyroid related I still think they should investigate my symptoms/concerns not just brushed me off and made me go back and nag them again!

perfumedlife · 17/06/2011 21:23

Gaston my Bupa covers all thyroid consultations/ops/bloods and loads more. I did consider moving to AXA PPP but there were loads of exemptions for chronic conditions. The op I had to remove thyroid would have cost 12k, so it does tot up if you pay. (they should have paid me, right enough, such was the cock up)

What other symptoms do you have? Do you ever have elbow/heel/neck pain., generally feel like a pensioner?

GastonTheLadybird · 17/06/2011 21:40

I'm with Bupa too so that's good news.

Always have neck pain, actually pain might be over egging the cake but it is always sore but doc put this down to the three (!) gland infections I've had in the last few months.

I have felt like a pensioner since I had DD (3yo) when I really shouldn't as she was one of those lovely babies that slept from 11pm - 5am when she was a few weeks old and through until 7pm after a few months - I've never been sleep deprived but I am constantly exhausted.

I think doc is going to test calcium levels too, apparently vitamin deficiency can have similar symptoms so will just wait and see what the tests come back as.

Jammygal · 20/06/2011 21:24

Now on 125 mcg for my 10.2 tsh ;) Hope it makes a difference ;)

I have just completed treatment for thyroid cancer.
Had a lump in my neck a year ago which was pressing on my throat at night. Got a biopsy done and an ultrasound which was inconclusive. Option of leaving it 6mths months and repeat or take that side out. Told chance of cancer was 8%. Devided to go with the operation. Had that in October, surgeon told me it looked fine and pathology was a formality. Then got the shock 2 weeks later that it was actually cancer ! After a muck up between hospitals with my notes eventually got the second operation to remove the remainder of the thyroid at the end of January (No cancer was found in that side.)

Went on a low iodine diet in April, and had 2 days of Thyrogen injections (Not nice had to go in my muscle in my bum) so they could do the radioiodine ablation at the end of April and my body scan. Will get a throglobulin blood test done at the end of July and if it's clear i'll be in remission.

Still getting my levothyroxine dose correct. Left hospital with 75mcgs, now on 150mcgs and still feel a bit tired especially in the afternoon, sometimes I can feel myself starting to nod of and can't stop it !

Hi there,

Long time lurker of this thread, first time poster. I've had years of trips to the GP and bloodtests all of which are in the 'normal range'. I've had hair loss for years and years, and have a fraction of the bushhair I had ten years ago. I've had palpitations, constipation and a piss poor tolerance for cold. Last winter my flatmate would sit in out flat in her pants and vest and I would be sitting on the sofa next to her in a hat and blanket. I'm back at the GP for another blood test. Can anyone tell me what demandgently encourage them to test for? The hair loss is getting me down.

freelancegirl · 17/09/2011 10:35

Hi sqweegie! Can't type much as on phone and it's a pain, but make sure you ask them to do a full thyroid function, including thyroid antibodies, TSH, t4, t3, and when you get the results make sure they give you the actual numbers and also their 'normal' ranges. Then come back here and we will also have a look at them for you. Good luck!

Anxietyone · 18/09/2011 09:14

Hi everyone...I was diagnosed with Graves about 16 years ago...had a partial thyroidectomy in 97 when I was 28...I now take 100 mcg of thyroxine.

Two of my dcs were born very low birth weight 3lb and both a month early
Anyone else had this happen? They put it down to my thyroid problems.

mrsmontano · 19/09/2011 12:02

Hiya would any of you mind giving me your opinion on my situation?
I've been feeling quite drained on and off for years now, but in the last 2-3 months have been much worse, climbing the stairs makes my leg muscles ache like I'm climbing 20flights of stairs, and brushing my teeth and things like that makes my arm ache the same way, my body is just totally exausted and aching.
I feel very weak. I also have thin hair and feel very heavy-headed and close to fainting quite often, everythings a real struggle.

I had a blood test which included Thyroid tests, and when I read this thread I really was expecting it to come back saying something was wrong with my thyroid, but NO everything is normal apparently! I don't wish to be ill, I just want a solution to how I'm feeling and not sure what to do next..

My serum free T4 level is 9.7 and serum TSH level is 1.03, is this ok?

freelancegirl · 19/09/2011 21:21

Hi Anxietyone and mrsmontano. It seems to be a bit quiet on here now! Anxietyone I am not sure about low birth weight but I have had recurrent miscarriages and no children yet something which is thought of as partially connected to autoimmune conditions such as hashimotos and graves. It's down to the NK cells (naturally killer cells) theory, whcih you might want to look up although it is a controversial area of medicine. I have chosen to have a go with it and am now under immunotherapy treatment, although last month I had a further miscarriage.

mrsmontano sorry you haven't been feeling very well. My opinion (am not a doctor of course!) is that your levels are actually normal at the moment, and by that I mean within proper normal ranges rather than the ones a lot of the docs use at the moment. I know that might be frustrating so sorry no0t to be able to help. Just keep testing for everything, including thyroid, as you never know what changes as you go along. I don't know much about it but have you looked up fibromyalgia?

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 19/09/2011 21:33

Seeing the GP in the morning for more blood results.

I'm not feeling all that great atm - I am definitely going to ask about taking / not taking my thyroxine before having the blood test.
