oh dear, one of my bookgroup friends has rung to ask for my parents number (they are neighbours) The really nice friend opposite with cancer has died and she wanted to tell my mum and dad Sad Am so sorry for them (neighbour and parents) There was some kind of mutual understanding of the situation as my parents know about end stage of cancer (in this woman's case it's been very fast) The thing that sticks with me is that dad said she'd been on Brompton mixture which is what my brother had-I remember that well -basically morphine. Sorry to add gloom.

I think people mean well when they say things like brave and inspiration band that it's more of a defence thing- because the prospect of cancer is frightening for most people -I think we know that you just get on with it really Smile

How sad. It does seem to have been quick, I remember you mentioning her before. Must bring all sorts of memories back.

You are right about other people, of course, MAS. It is just that people are sometimes so wide of the mark. Not their fault at all, but still a bit hard to swallow.

I have a candle lit today for a child in dd's class. He has many health difficulties and is in hospital having some tests. He is such a cheerful and brave little chap, and his parents are great. Some families have so much to put up with.

smee · 28/01/2011 11:08

MAS, that's sad. Will your parents be very upset? Am guessing so. Poor woman.

And you're right of course, people do mean well and are trying to be nice. Not sure why it's so irritating - think it's that rather doleful sad look that comes into their eyes.

Cakes, I fire back at you - Jammie Dodgers. Ha!

Cakesandale · 28/01/2011 11:11

Have just looked up Brompton mixture. Blimey.

Cakesandale · 28/01/2011 11:13

Ooh - low blow!

We got given the remains of dd's tandoori chicken to bring home in a doggie bag - may have that for lunch. Ha!

smee · 28/01/2011 11:19

[evil cackle] Jammie Dodgers though. mmmm....

smee · 28/01/2011 11:21

Just seen your post on the little boy, Cakes. Candle's a sound idea. Lovely thing to do. Hope his tests give some positive news.

Cakesandale · 28/01/2011 11:30

Thank you. Me too Sad

But in the meantime, I concede defeat over the Jammie Dodgers. Another sound idea....

MaryAnnSingleton · 28/01/2011 11:41

yes, candle is a very nice idea.
Mum and dad will be upset- they really liked them Sad They came to my strawberry tea and as far as I know she hadn't been diagnosed then.
We have plain choc digestives in the fridge....

'eck MAS, you're upping the stakes now. I have chocolate almonds in the kitchen, which someone gave me for my birthday. Think I can hear them calling me. I tell myself they're healthy.. Grin

MaryAnnSingleton · 28/01/2011 11:52

chocolate almonds sound divine ! I bought some Fry's chocolate cream bars on Wednesday for the nostalgia- they are so nice- ds ate one last night-he'd asked if he could have a few of them -he is eating like a horse !

Cakesandale · 28/01/2011 11:57

Growth spurt? Prepare your bank account for many new clothes purchases for ds.

MaryAnnSingleton · 28/01/2011 12:21

he is getting tall-definitely a visit to clothes shops v soon- but the Sainsbury's bill was much increased as I bought extra things for him !!

hello all.

Sorry to hear about your parents' friend MAS Sad, so many people are touched by this horrible illness, I hope it doesn't affect your Parents too badly after all they've been through recently.

Cakes I hope the little boy has good results from his tests, a candle is a nice idea.

The chocolate almonds sound good Smee, and they are obviously healthyGrin (actually I want some now, I'm quite keen on sugared almonds too even though they are teeth breakingly hard.)

I went to a healthy eating talk by a dietician yesterday. It turns out all the things I like aren't healthy - who'd have thought?
He said maximum of 14 units of alcohol a week (2 a day). Most of it was common sense stuff although he did say don't go for any diets that cut out whole groups of foods (like low carb ones)just make sure the carbs you have are wholemeal, and you don't add fat to them.

In my case it's one thing knowing what to do, but quite another doing it.

Met some friends for coffee this morning which was nice - caught up on all the gossip. Grin

Hope everything is going well for LJ today, fingers firmly crossed here.

smee · 28/01/2011 13:41

LJ's having her Bone Scan isn't she?? Hope it's okay LJ.

Kurri, I hate wholemeal pasta - do I really have to?!

SparkleRainbow · 28/01/2011 14:05

MAS I am really sorry about your news, I hope your parents are not too shaken by her death. So hard. Sad

I hope LJ is ok with her bone scan, I am thinking of you. Smile

Can I raise the stakes from jammy dodgers to birthday cake.....it is my birthday today. 39 today.....and it is sunny for the first time ever on my birthday. I am taking this as a good omen.

Smee - wholemeal pasta is armpit of the universe food, and I like wholemeal bread! Grin

SparkleRainbow · 28/01/2011 14:07

Have eaten rest of my thornton's praline melts and feel sick now.....can I temporarily commandeer the envy emoticon for a feeling sick one? Envy think I am actually green on top of very pale face have had since Monday - not a good look.

KurriKurri · 28/01/2011 14:24

Happy Birthday Sparkle,Smile hope you are having a good day - praline melts sound very yummy. I wish I was 39 Grin

Wholemeal spaghetti is quite nice, I had some yesterday with asparagus and broccoli. Some of the other kinds are a bit stodgy though. What's the consensus on brown rice? - I find that quite hard to chomp my way through.

I have started making cakes with wholemeal flour, but I tend to use half WM half white so it's not too heavy. Mind you a cake is not exactly a healthy item even if it's wholemeal Grin

Cakesandale · 28/01/2011 14:26

Happy birthday sparkles! 39. A baby, in fact! (48 here Angry )

Better to eat them all now than to have them calling to you all weekend.

Just written the cheque for the taxman. I think I need a vomit emoticon too, and also a slightly wobbly one....My bank account has gone all echoey...

So THAT'S how things get posted twice! Doh!

MaryAnnSingleton · 28/01/2011 15:49

Happy Birthday too sparkle - you are a mere child !!
wholemeal pasta- yuck..though love wholemeal bread- brown rice is a bit too wholesome for me too. And secretly I love white bread toasted and marmaladed (not bothered about butter) (though French butter, icy cold with some seasalt on top spread on fabulous warm new bread is heavenly)

Enough of this- will go and eat some fruit !
Thanks for kind words about mum and dad's friend - it's a horrid thing.
Hope Limejelly's bone scan has gone ok x

You have all made me feel very young, although body actually feels decades older than normal at the moment. Mmmm creamy french butter on fresh warm bread.....I would be in heaven especially if accompanied with a lovely bottle of French wine! >

Fingers still crossed LJ Smile

smee · 28/01/2011 17:48

Happy Birthday from me too, Sparkle, even though you are horribly young. Smile I was 45 a couple of weeks ago. Are you doing anything tonight to celebrate? I do hope so. Cake at the very least, I'd say.

Wholemeal pasta is just wrong and brown rice takes too long to cook [feeble excuse emoticon]. I do love wholemeal bread so that's something. Having said that, MAS I could join you on the toasted white, though you absolutely do have to have butter. mmm.. Smile

LJ, hope you're back and not feeling too blasted by it all. Did you get your CT Scan too?
