Is anyone else crying? Asking for a friend

Full on sobbing here. It occurred to me earlier that my DD, who was born in 2010, has only ever had a Tory government. Till now.

How does a tactical vote work though? Why don't you vote for the party you want?

In Scotand for me anyone apart from SNP. I loathe the SNP. In the unlikely event of a seat being an SNP / Reform fight I wouldn't vote Reform but I still wouldn't vote SNP.

My constituency is Lib Dem, with SNP second. Conservatives and Labour weren't in the running.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 04/07/2024 22:22

Green as a protest vote although I did also consider Plaid. It won’t make a difference anyway in my constituency but I couldn’t make myself vote for either of the 2 main parties and at least a Green vote shows that the environment is one of the most important issues to me.

I don’t agree with all of the Greens manifesto (especially on protecting women and our safe spaces) but I couldn’t find a party that agreed with all of my beliefs so I had to make do.

Imo everyone morally should stand up and be counted and I couldn’t bring myself to just spoil my ballot paper again like last time 😢 Why can’t there be a centre party that wants to prioritise women as much as men but who also doesn’t give cushy government contracts to their mates or prioritise money or the party line/ politics above what is really best for the people who are struggling ?

MermaidEyes · 04/07/2024 22:28

I'm not surprised by the Reform numbers. A lot of them have defected from conservatives. I know a few Reform voters, they all live in very quaint 'white' towns and villages and think we can go back to the 1950s if we're lucky.

YoYoBiscuits · 04/07/2024 22:29

so does this suggest more lib dem mumsnetters than in the general population? And more greens, less reform? interesting.

2littleonesx · 04/07/2024 22:31

Reform

My son is exactly the same, in fact he just said that before bed!

HereForTheFreeLunch · 04/07/2024 22:34

Tories - based on local politics and corruption. The Labour guys did here what Tories did at the centre.
I will be very happy to see Tories lose in Westminster and Labour lose locally. (But I think Labour will win locally too)

My reservation against Labour is locally because they are so shit and centrally because of their trans and anti-women policies. Lets see how the next 5 years pan out.

Bibbidybobbidyboo1 · 04/07/2024 22:38

Yay!!! Happy… just, happy!

In my area, it’s very simple: vote Lib Dem or vote Tory.

A vote for labour / green is essentially a vote for the Tories. Tactical voting is the only option.

I had to do this by voting SNP. 😟 But realistically if I voted for anyone else I’d be helping the Tories.

TeenagersAngst · 04/07/2024 22:51

Clever man on BBC in charge of exit poll saying while Labour might have landslide in terms of seats, they may not have landslide in terms of vote share.

Reform and LD have cannibalised Tory vote.

Chocolatepeanutbuttercupsandicecream · 04/07/2024 22:57

Labour (me)
Lib dem (ds)
We live in an SNP stronghold though, so I suspect our constituency will remain so

My son too, I’d just gone on maternity leave on election day, he was born 11 days later

Not quite. The first past the post system will distort how many people have actually voted for 1 party nationally.

A party could have a large proportion of the votes in an area but still not win the seat at a local level.

Ladybrrrd · 04/07/2024 23:08

Result! Happy too that Angela Raynor at least is not getting drawn in to transphobic hype masked as pro-women's rights.

Here's hoping that Labour can start to build an economy that is not based on taking from the poor and giving to the rich.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 04/07/2024 23:09

I voted Labour but I'm not excited this time, because Starmer is very much the right wing of the party. They were the best of a terrible bunch, though, and the party has some good people in it.

HungryLittleCrocodile · 04/07/2024 22:11

Thankfully, Reform didn't do as well as some people predicted! Shock

I was worried Nigel Farage may be PM tomorrow!

Think he will pop off back into oblivion?! Or stay and fight with his 13 seats?

I don't think he'll ever disappear sadly!

@YoYoBiscuits For example in my area the Lib Dems polled at 40% and Cons 25%.

The exit poll and seats won will only reflect that. Seats won. Not the number of votes or the percentage of votes that secured it.

Portakalkedi · 04/07/2024 23:20

Not sure how representative it will be though as MN is majority Labour supporters.

Crying with happiness if that exit poll is to go off. My cousin aged 48 died in hospice while the Tories partied the night away and were groping each other in hallways.

tonight is just a small justice for those that suffered during the Covid pandemic and were made a laughing stock of the tories

Same. My very good family friend died in hospital on his own from COVID while the despicable disgusting Tories partied at No 10 dancing around and groping each other, myself my family and friends would never vote Tory again because of that low behaviour plus the damage they've done this Country

Port1aCastis · 04/07/2024 23:35

I think my constituency will go LibDem although I voted Labour. but we've probably got the Tories out!
Problem is we are usually the last to declare so it's going to be a long night, possibly won't get the results until tomorrow pm
Ah well may as well open another bottle and wait I think.

Mt61 · 04/07/2024 23:38

We all voted reform, managed to persuade friends & family to vote Reform- previously all Tory supporters

My son too, I’d just gone on maternity leave on election day, he was born 11 days later

My dd was 2011 but I hadn't thought of it like this but I did have the scary realisation that if they go for a full 5 year term DD (my baby....) will be voting in the next election
