General election 2024

I don't think the Tories will do nearly as badly as predicted?

What do you think?

Never count your chickens
Remember the 92 election?
Kinnock was ahead in the polls and it seemed like a shoo in.
It wasn't. He lost to the Grey Man who likes peas 🤣

Labour were ahead by 1 to 3 percent in the polls on the eve of the 1992 GE. No comparison to the position today.

Have you not read any news today? The Tories have already conceded defeat.

Can you provide a link the the polling from that time that on the eve of the election had Kinnock's Labour party 20+ points ahead?

Your ass should be ready for what is coming unless you totally depend on welfare.

I agree that some of the mates of the Tory party who have lived off government handouts of millions/billions of pounds (Michelle Mone) need to be ready for what is coming. For everyone else what is coming is better days ahead.

I believe (and hope) that we will have a substantial Labour majority tomorrow morning, but I doubt the Tory collapse will be quite as large as the polls are suggesting. I suspect there may be a certain coyness about admitting being a Tory voter at present.

If we do see Tory losses on the scale some are predicting I think it will be largely due to Reform splitting the right wing vote.
Interesting times. Not long to wait though.

I reckon if we see a Labour victory, of whatever size then that is a huge endorsement of Starmer and all that he stands for and the changes he has made to the Labour party. It is some turnaround from losing by 80 seats to be on the verge of government.

His turnaround of his party in such a short time has been really impressive. I hope we’ll see him do the same for the country.

I think it is important to remember that included in turning around the country is firstly not working to make it worse, that would be a big turnaround from the previous government.

I fully agree regarding the turn around of Labour - but I do think that the last five years of Tory misrule have been so shockingly incompetent and corrupt, that even my cats (had they chosen to stand) would have probably polled higher than the Tories at the moment.

Westfacing · 04/07/2024 06:49

The polls are predicting a near wipe-out, so anything above say 100 will be seen as 'not as bad'!

Having had an 80 seat majority, to lose the following election is a disaster in itself Smile

Don't the effects on women's rights concern you? Stonewall have been very quiet, just wait until after the election.

They certainly do, which is why I will be voting Lib Dem today.

They're worse than Labour on this issue.

I am voting tory, not because I want them but because one party having a supermajority would be even worse

Don’t be silly.

GinForBreakfast · 04/07/2024 07:23

@NoWordForFluffy of course they are, but locally it can make sense depending on the individual candidates or the constituency profile.

But so much better than the Tories on women's rights, and so that is where my cross will fall.

As long as you include men in your definition of women, yes!

You are quite correct the Lib Dems will also be better on the rights of men than the Tories as well.

They love men. They put them ahead of women.

Boris, Truss etc - a shit show. Yes, given the extremely low approval ratings for Starmer but with polling showing a large majority, this is clearly a vote of discontent.

I don't think Sunak should necessarily be considered in the same awful camp as Boris etc - but he should have been more ruthless in getting rid of the rot in his camp. As a person, he strikes me as hardworking and with integrity. I think even his opposition leaders would describe him as such.

I think Labour will have a healthy majority but not as large as forecast. Then Conservative PR will try to spin it as a success for the Tory Party.

Kendodd · 03/07/2024 13:55

That would be great to see the LibDems or a LibDem/Green coalition for the official opposition.
Won't happen though. I reckon the Tories will win at least 200+ seats and Reform zero seats.

God help us from a party who confuse stunts with ideas, hop into bed with the Tories at the first opportunity a bunch of green consumerists, both overwhelmingly full of MC white virtue signalers who like to pose as allies but are only interested in being saviours.

The reality is that Starmer could have spent the last week live on TV shagging the late Queen's corgis and will still win a thumping majority.

The reality also is that there is no real money to spend and Labour are not prepared to borrow or raise the taxes which produce meaningful money. That limits them to policies more about noise than signal. Women's rights are already in the firing line and after the appalling treatment of Diane Abbott I'm inclined to vote "none of the above" for the first time in my adult life.

Its a depressing collective of 'options'.

Good luck with that! Wipeout can’t be spun as success without the entire country laughing at you (even more than it is already).
