I don't think the Tories will do nearly as badly as predicted?

What do you think?

I am voting tory, not because I want them but because one party having a supermajority would be even worse

What's a supermajority? What difference does it make to UK governance?

ActivePeony · 03/07/2024 18:19

Well depending on your politics I guess but yes I agree that they are too low. Lots of undecided voters out there too.

I've not seen the background data for the polls to see how they've handled the don't knows.

The Guardian's poll of women had around a quarter considering spoiling their vote. I bet there's still a large % of voters who won't decide til they have their pencil in their hand tomorrow. I think it's those people who'll decide this election, maybe with some surprises.

Between the spoilers and the don't knows, I'm wondering where we'll end up? 🤷‍♀️

You mean like the supermajority Boris Johnson won? That worked out well.

Yes I think 120 would be more like it tbh.

For the party in government to return after a GE with less than 20% of the seats in parliament is a drubbing, and don't let anyone tell you anything else.

It is important to remember that for Labour overturning the 80 seat Tory majority in 2019 is a triumph and a disaster for the Tories. A majority of any kind for Labour is amazing.

I made this point upthread.

That makes less than no sense 😂

There's no such thing as a 'supermajority' in UK politics. Stop falling for Tory lies.

I think 'super majority' has ended up in common parlance same as 'fully costed' has. ;)

Of course, a huge majority, regardless of which end of the political spectrum, is not great for democracy.

Cus the last 14 years have been so successful😂

A large majority whatever the party is never good! I'm all for proportional representation.

I think the Tory bots and supporters are smearing themselves like lubricant all over MN is what I think. You will not have my ass, no matter how much lube you’re smothering us in.

Grow up.

"I am voting tory, not because I want them but because one party having a supermajority would be even worse"

Bless ya. Rishi's little sponge just soaking it all up

Do you think being actively unpleasant makes your opinion more valid?

Why are some Left leaning posters unable to be civil?

There is no such thing as 'fully costed'. Again a term that's been bandied about much this time around. Just new terms, but essentially a huge majority whether conservative, labour etc is not good for democracy.

Perhaps the Tories should have considered what was good for democracy and the country before enriching themselves and their mates?

You're very touchy @ChardonnaysBeastlyCat hardly "actively unpleasant". And yes, I do think the fact that a supermajority isn't a thing here (much as Rishi has known him feeding it out there would convince some more naive voters), makes my point more valid. Or more factual, you could say

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 03/07/2024 21:13

Not touchy.

Just observant.

Are you going to continue with the personal attacks? After all, this seems to be your MO

lovernotfighter · 03/07/2024 21:38

@lbwagain

I think you'll find they are all claiming things are "fully costed". I've worked in govt, in an incoming minister's office, even - not in this country. I know that it's all rubbish until you actually see the real numbers yourself.

Nobody else is going on about supermajorities, and as many others have pointed out previously, it wasn't such a problem when the shoe was on the other foot in 2019.

How I wish it was illegal to knowingly lie in an election campaign. We likely wouldn't have Brexit, to start with.

Politics, post-Trump and Johnson has turned into an absolute joke. Not only do our supposed representatives lie to us every day, they don't even bother to hide it anymore. It seems the more outrageous the more support they end up with.

Someone shoot me to the moon, please.

Takoneko · 03/07/2024 21:46

“Supermajority” seems to be a way of saying “clear mandate” when you don’t like the side that might end up with that clear mandate.

TakeOnFlea · 03/07/2024 21:57

"Are you going to continue with the personal attacks? After all, this seems to be your MO"

Mate, you're the only one honing in and getting personal.

Never count your chickens
Remember the 92 election?
Kinnock was ahead in the polls and it seemed like a shoo in.
It wasn't. He lost to the Grey Man who likes peas 🤣

Polling science has gotten much better. However, I do think that the tories will do better than predicted. Mainly because I can't quite believe that it's going to be so disastrous for them.

Fightthepower · 03/07/2024 22:47

I think the Tories are tactically talking about losing disastrously so that if they don’t lose by such a huge margin they can claim it as a win 🤣

Your ass should be ready for what is coming unless you totally depend on welfare.
