To not understand why people vote Conservative

Aquarius1234 · 01/07/2024 09:23

I'm in my late 30s and don't understand my relatives pretty much all voting Conservative.
Aren't they a bunch of upper class twits, plus most are racist, homophobic etc etc
And Conservative in nature.
The ones that obv hardly know anything other than for tax reasons, are tedious.
That's the only thing I knew when I was about 13...
Labour don't male average salary people pay loads of tax right?

The IFS agrees with you

It doesn’t and repeating it ad infinitum doesn’t make it true.

cavalier · 01/07/2024 14:01

This is why
I lived through this time and can’t forget it and I don’t like Starmers stance on Women’s safe spaces and his back tracking on Corbyn … conveniently 🙄

Nonsense. Reeves has been explicit about increasing the supply of money through economic growth. Big business and most economists agree with her.

The famous magic money tree then.

If Rachel Reeves is capable of pulling that off then good luck to her.

I remain sceptical.

MIL (90) has voted conservative because she always has done. She held her nose to do it this time as she not happy with BoJo, the Lettuce etc . She’s got 4 grandchildren and 3 of them will be voting labour. The other one is 17 and would be voting labour if she could. My father (80) a life long liberal will be tactically voting labour too.

She’s worked hard and done ok but not rich. She’s not racist (not any more than many people in the shires). But she’s a lost true blue cause.

Haha you are fast

Yes it stated the Labour manifesto was a conspiracy of silence and tax rises and spending cuts would be needed over the next five years

You missed their statement but that’s not surprising

Notonthestairs · 01/07/2024 14:03

The IFS pretty sceptical about the Conservative manifesto too.

What the manifesto did not tell us was where the £10 to £20 billion of cuts to spending on unprotected public services, as implied by the March Budget, might come from. Indeed the billions of savings from cutting civil service numbers and the rest noted in the manifesto have been earmarked to fund the additional defence spending, and would come on top of those cuts. This manifesto remains silent on the wider problems facing core public services - and if you think those civil servants, management consultants and quangos were delivering anything, these plans imply an even tougher time than set out back in March.”

Yawn

Batgin · 01/07/2024 14:24

Because they have small business which they run from home, and not brick businesses. In this case they are better off under conservative rather than labour if you actually look at maifestos etc

Because they are people who work and who don't claim any benifits, and are always they people that are overlooked or who don't recieve any help.

Because they care about safe single sex spaces for women and girls

Amoung a lot of other reason, each individual.

But no, just label everyone who doesn't blindly support labour as racist, homophobic bigots...

@TheColourOutOfSpace

"That's quite a sweeping and juvenile generalisation about people who have a different political approach and mindset to you. It doesn't sound like you are genuinely interested in understanding various political outlooks, and maybe you believe there is only 'one true' political view which conveniently happens to be yours?"

^this sums up my view of labour voters tbh

Tories expected the same, that growth will fuel economy, but then Covid and Ukraine happened and we're still in aftermath.
What magic sparkle Rachel Reeves is going to apply to get said growth? and what if it's not going to happen? who's going to fund all that happiness then?

The magic money tree that big business and the finance industry are backing - BlackRock, Lloyds Banking Group, Santander, HSBC, Phoenix Group and Fidelity International, among others.

If you can't understand that other people think differently from you then you might have an issue with theory of mind. This can be a symptom of a number of conditions or neurodivergent statuses.

Or you might have issues with socialisation.

Have you explored whether you might be ND OP?

greencatbob · 01/07/2024 15:00

The answer is lots of people are upper class homophobic twits so of course they vote for their own kind.

LastTrainEast · 01/07/2024 15:01

Yes and all Conservatives eat babies too.

The tendency to think of people being one of several types is the basis of racism and all the other isms.

There was a time when the Conservatives were the landowners and Labour the street sweepers, but that has long gone. Look up your favourite Labour MPs and see their background. They will be just as interested in tax breaks and just as contemptuous of ordinary voters.

My whole family were Labour supporters, but right now Labour are seeking to remove all women's rights, end Free Speech and hand over control to special interest groups.

So I'll vote Tory until I see the old Labour come back and if that happens I'll be celebrating for a month.

LastTrainEast · 01/07/2024 15:06

Labour can't even stand the women in their own party. Laughing at Rosie Duffield getting death threats.

Not to mention supporting the rights of men to watch little girls shower. You must all have seen Starmer's statement. Women will continue to have spaces for privacy but men will be allowed in whenever they like.

Aquarius1234 · 01/07/2024 09:54

One person made out the NHS was good under Conservative about always being able to get an appointment.
I wasn't sure if that was sarcasm..

Or they live in Wales where the NHS run by Welsh Labour?

Franzkafkascat · 01/07/2024 15:17

user1492757084 · 01/07/2024 09:38

This.

And I would add in that conservative voters try to live and let live, without too much negative judgement.

😂 really ?

What men are watching little girls shower ? So all transgender people are paedos or perverts is the implication ?
Ah the vindictive post about trans gender people. I’m gender critical and don’t think anyone can change their biological sex or should gain entry to single sex spaces but that doesn’t mean it’s ok to mock people because they are different.

Actually the IFS is very clear that it does:

Denying it doesn't mean it's not true.

I will be voting Conservative, there are quite a few things I’m not happy with, but I feel they’re the best of a bad bunch

HeraSyndulla · 01/07/2024 15:32

Because the alternative is even worse.

RDMPrules · 01/07/2024 15:37

My parents, lovely people, not racist or homophobic, vote conservative. I think for them it's a belief that they've worked hard to achieve what they have in life (middle class comfortable not loaded) and they don't like the idea of too many benefits for people who they think haven't bothered. I think they're misguided and are lucky enough to not have needed extra support in life. I also think they mistakenly think they have more in common with the billionaires than those on benefits.

But I can still understand where they are coming from to an extent, all the while where I support Labour and am in favour of public services, state education and NHS and benefits for those who need them rather than survival of the richest.
