Labour hate people like me

I feel sick at the thought of how much our lives are going to change.

This is not a thread to bash or criticise people nervous about Labour. It’s a place for those of us who are feeling very anxious to have a bit of space - it’s not something we are ‘allowed’ to say in public without being called ‘scum’ ‘selfish tories’ or similar. I’m not particularly linked to any party and not sure how to vote, I may spoil my ballot.

Labour have made it very clear that they intend to make us poorer and our lives harder.
I’m a woman - Labour intend to remove women’s rights
I’m rural - Labour aren’t interested in rural areas
I work in a private school - enough said
I have teens - I expect Labour to put vat on uni fees
We both work full time and have slogged our guts out to now be in a position where we have a comfortable (but not high) income - I expect to be taxed more heavily.
We have elderly parents - I expect the cost of care and inheritance tax to increase.

Maybe it’s selfish but we’re screwed and I don’t expect that what we lose will be put to efficient or good use. It feels like we will be punished for having worked hard and being ambitious.

Xns- er, well yes in half a million a year you can afford to pay more tax!! Most of us can’t so I’m not sure of the relevance of your post (unless it’s just a stealth boast).

Most of us could afford to pay a bit more tax. Especially if it was clearly linked to better services. There’s no point in cutting people’s taxes if it results in them having to pay for private healthcare because they can’t get a GP appointment and having to pay for their child to visit the dentist.

The relevance of the post is that someone who pays a lot of tax already can see beyond the figures on their payslip. I’m a pensioner who shares that view.

It's written by Labour....

They also:
Invaded Iraq on a pretence
Invaded Afghanistan
Lost countless lives of the above.

A scientist investigating the WMD lies died in frankly suspicious circumstances.

Oversaw the largest privatisation mission in history by privatising the most public spaces ever, hospitals and creation of academy schools.

The gap between poor and rich was bigger by 2007 than it ever was under Thatcher.

We privatised air traffic control and outsourced scientific research.

Now admit they never thought China could ever be a threat and never produce as much carbon in 12 years as we have since the start of the Industrial Revolution!

Great article here which is a more nuanced view: https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2010/sep/25/labour-years-term-report?CMP=ShareiOSAppp_Other

If BoJo, Truss, and Sunak are the best we could do we are also absolutely and completely fucked. As history has proven.

Please don't for one minute think I am advocating for the Conservatives 😱

Just saying that Starmer is not a convincing leader, but that's the best Labour has to offer. Depressing.

I’m just saying i’ll be worse off (like you will) but i’m fine with it. I’m all for it. And I am waaaaay better off personally under the tories but I don’t support that because I see the bigger picture around the kind of country we want to live in.

See my point?

BIossomtoes · 30/06/2024 21:06

Oversaw the largest privatisation mission in history by privatising the most public spaces ever, hospitals and creation of academy schools.

To say that is to completely misunderstand PFI. Those spaces belong to the country, they’re being paid for with what is essentially a mortgage. PFI is excellent in principle, the problem is that the contracts were negotiated locally by people whose skills and experience were amateurish. A central team of crack contract lawyers should have represented the government.

The gap between poor and rich was bigger by 2007 than it ever was under Thatcher.

The statistics don’t support that.

Also - the reference to my salary is not a stealth boast. I’m trying to give some context to how the tories support the rich and make them richer. And I think that’s disgusting. They should take more tax from people like me who can afford it, to pay for things we all need.

I'm a middle class Jewish TERF with two kids in private school. I'm fucked.

CurlewKate · 30/06/2024 21:16

You say elsewhere that to you The Middle is 60 to 120K. Trust me-that's not The Middle.

If you’re middle class you’re really not fucked. You might be slightly less well off. You won’t die. Goodness there are grannies dying of sepsis in hospital corridors and SEN kids spending years out of education because our system is so broken and all some people can do is weep about the fact that they might have to be the ones to pay a bit more because… well who else should? If not the middle and upper classes, then who?

The tories certainly know what a woman is for:
Blow jobs in the office (Johnson)
Groping in the hallways (Hancock)
Unwanted touching (numerous)
Raping (they have effectively decriminalised this).

Their policies have meant that those who are carers (usually women), or sole parents (usually women) are left living in poor quality housing, in need of food banks should they fall on hard times.

They have allowed men to enter female only spaces with legislation they have either introduced, or failed to introduce appropriately. Under their custodianship men have been placed in female prisons where women have been raped, men have been allowed and supported in the NHS in accessing female spaces, language has been adjusted to accommodate easier acceptance. Children have been subjected to literature telling them that bondage is good and the police have allowed people in gimp masks and clothing to interact with children.

The tories have thrown women under the bus. They have encouraged organisations to embrace this shit, but somehow, they have made people believe that it is nothing to do with them, but it's all the bogeyman Starmers fault.

I'm astounded by people's refusal to look behind the curtains.

Raping (they have effectively decriminalised this).

What law did a Tory govt pass to do this?

They have allowed men to enter female only spaces with legislation they have either introduced, or failed to introduce appropriately.

Both GRA2004 and EA2010 were passed under Labour govts.

The bondage material for kids etc, that would be down to Stonewall and other lobbying groups encouraging schools and employers to "go beyond the law", not the Govt's doing. It's the Govt who issued schools guidance that countered what FWR have termed "Stonewall 'law'". As for prisons, yes, MoJ dropped the ball on that, but it was Labour who drafted EA2010 to exclude prisons in the first place.

BIossomtoes · 30/06/2024 21:39

Raping (they have effectively decriminalised this).

What law did a Tory govt pass to do this?

The number of sexual offence cases waiting to go to the Crown Court now stands at 10,141 – a new record high. This is a 21% increase compared to the number waiting at the same time the previous year. And a 196% increase from 2019 (the year before Covid-19 impacted the running of the Crown Court). The number of adult rape cases waiting to go to court stands at 2,786 – another record high.

That effectively means rape has been decriminalised because rapists aren’t being tried, let alone convicted.

Labour haven't been in government for 14 years. The Tories have had time to produce legislation and change laws to prevent men in women's spaces but failed to do it. The government are in charge of what gets taught in schools, Stonewall didn't just march into schools and the NHS and take charge.

You can't blame Labour for the failing of the Tories.

That's been the case for a long time. Corbyn, Milliband, Cameron, Johnson, Truss, Sunak, Farage, Davey, Swinson, it's hardly been a cascade of competence.

Labour really did choose the wrong Milliband brother 🤦‍♂️

Hi OP, I don't know how old you are, but when Labour were in power last time (aging parents/young relations in education/professional career & self employed) I was in a similar position to you and life and the country around us generally felt much more positive and optimistic then. I keep posting this list, but will post it again as it shows just how Labour benefitted ordinary people of all types and the environment.

Having lived through 15ish years of Labour and 15 years of the Tories, the world certainly seems much worse now in terms of infrastructure, public services that we all use e.g. A&E, roads, the environment, employment rights, education, opportunity, crime.

  13. Brought back matrons to hospital wards.
  14. Devolved power to the Scottish Parliament.
  15. Devolved power to the Welsh Assembly.
  16. Dads now get paternity leave of 2 weeks for the first time.
  17. NHS Direct offering free convenient patient advice.
  18. Gift aid was worth £828 million to charities last year.
  19. Restored city-wide government to London.
  20. Record number of students in higher education.
  21. Child benefit up 26 per cent since 1997.
  22. Delivered 2,200 Sure Start Children’s Centres.
  23. Introduced the Equality and Human Rights Commission.
  24. £200 winter fuel payment to pensioners & up to £300 for over-80s.
  25. On course to exceed our Kyoto target for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
  26. Restored devolved government to Northern Ireland.
  27. Over 36,000 more teachers in England and 274,000 more support staff and teaching assistants.
  28. All full time workers now have a right to 24 days paid holiday.
  29. A million pensioners lifted out of poverty.
  30. 600,000 children lifted out of relative poverty.
  31. Introduced child tax credit giving more money to parents.
  32. Scrapped Section 28 and introduced Civil Partnerships.
  33. Brought over 1 million social homes up to standard.
  34. Inpatient waiting lists down by over half a million since 1997.
  35. Banned fox hunting.
  36. Cleanest rivers, beaches, drinking water and air since before the industrial revolution.
  37. Free TV licences for over-75s.
  38. Banned fur farming and the testing of cosmetics on animals.
  39. Free breast cancer screening for all women aged between 50-70.
  40. Free off peak local bus travel for over-60s.
  41. New Deal – helped over 1.8 million people into work.
  42. Over 3 million child trust funds have been started.
  43. Free eye test for over 60s.
  44. More than doubled the number of apprenticeships.
  45. Free entry to national museums and galleries.
  46. Overseas aid budget more than doubled.
  47. Heart disease deaths down by 150,000 and cancer deaths down by 50,000.
  48. Cut long-term youth unemployment by 75 per cent.
  49. Free nursery places for every three and four-year-olds.
  50. Free fruit for most four to six-year-olds at school.

A list of 50 statements with no links to substantiate any of them. Please can you demonstrate fact checking.

Why is a statement of fact offensive?

Teentaxidriver · 30/06/2024 21:54

See comments from Serica Energy’s chairman last week, North Sea oil and gas companies likely to start mothballing production. I reckon black outs are a foreseeable outcome next winter. I doubt any administration could survive inflicting power cuts on its electorate.

WishfulThunking · 30/06/2024 22:00

The Tories have made being selfish an art form. Successful social democracies pay fair tax and support the vulnerable. We have been taught that we should look at a survival of the fittest model which is so cruel it beggars belief.

We’ll be worse off personally under a Labour government but looking at the big picture we’ll be so much better off.

Thanks for this. The article linked at the end is really interesting and balanced. I remember the huge disappointment when New Labour cut lone parents’ benefits not long after they came in. There are such high expectations of Labour now and I fear what will happen at the next election if people feel let down.

ActivePeony · 30/06/2024 22:11

I always thought 'third world' was a cold war term to describe countries not aligned to either the USA or USSR like 'third party'. Can't see why that is offensive but always happy to be educated

It is. Hence my refusal to have any truck with it being offensive

So when you said this Blossomtoes:

Can she - and you - afford public services deteriorating any further? Do you really want to live in a third world country?

You meant do I want to live in a country not allied to the USA or the USSR. Ok then.

BIossomtoes · 30/06/2024 22:13

I remember the huge disappointment when New Labour cut lone parents’ benefits not long after they came in.

It was the first thing they did and I remember shouting at the radio on the way to work when they did it. I was so disappointed in them.

I don’t think expectations are particularly high this time round. I think Starmer’s played a very clever game with a strategy of under promise and over deliver.

hattie43 · 30/06/2024 22:18

I'm worried too. I worked a lifetime to get some financial security for my retirement and now it's here I can see me being penalised every which way.

mynamechangemyrules · 30/06/2024 22:18

Oh wow this is mad, I have exactly the same profile as you, EXACTLY! Except I'm also a single parent and receive no maintenance at the moment, so I bear the burden of all costs.

And I think you are talking nonsense.
