I feel sick at the thought of how much our lives are going to change.

This is not a thread to bash or criticise people nervous about Labour. It’s a place for those of us who are feeling very anxious to have a bit of space - it’s not something we are ‘allowed’ to say in public without being called ‘scum’ ‘selfish tories’ or similar. I’m not particularly linked to any party and not sure how to vote, I may spoil my ballot.

Labour have made it very clear that they intend to make us poorer and our lives harder.
I’m a woman - Labour intend to remove women’s rights
I’m rural - Labour aren’t interested in rural areas
I work in a private school - enough said
I have teens - I expect Labour to put vat on uni fees
We both work full time and have slogged our guts out to now be in a position where we have a comfortable (but not high) income - I expect to be taxed more heavily.
We have elderly parents - I expect the cost of care and inheritance tax to increase.

Maybe it’s selfish but we’re screwed and I don’t expect that what we lose will be put to efficient or good use. It feels like we will be punished for having worked hard and being ambitious.

Blossom- active is trying to gently point out that ‘third world’ is no longer used because it’s pretty offensive for what should be obvious reasons to most people. ‘Low income country’ is a better term, amongst others.

I always thought 'third world' was a cold war term to describe countries not aligned to either the USA or USSR like 'third party'. Can't see why that is offensive but always happy to be educated Smile

I didn't think there was a shortage of jobs in schools?

Actually, their may be soon. Nothing to do with political policy, all to do with falling birth rates

It is. Hence my refusal to have any truck with it being offensive.

The tories certainly know what a woman is for:
Blow jobs in the office (Johnson)
Groping in the hallways (Hancock)
Unwanted touching (numerous)
Raping (they have effectively decriminalised this).

Their policies have meant that those who are carers (usually women), or sole parents (usually women) are left living in poor quality housing, in need of food banks should they fall on hard times.

They have allowed men to enter female only spaces with legislation they have either introduced, or failed to introduce appropriately. Under their custodianship men have been placed in female prisons where women have been raped, men have been allowed and supported in the NHS in accessing female spaces, language has been adjusted to accommodate easier acceptance. Children have been subjected to literature telling them that bondage is good and the police have allowed people in gimp masks and clothing to interact with children.

The tories have thrown women under the bus. They have encouraged organisations to embrace this shit, but somehow, they have made people believe that it is nothing to do with them, but it's all the bogeyman Starmers fault.

I'm astounded by people's refusal to look behind the curtains.

If Starmer is the best the UK can do for a political leader, we are absolutely and completely fucked.

If BoJo, Truss, and Sunak are the best we could do we are also absolutely and completely fucked. As history has proven.

Combination of a generation that’s never lived under a Labour government as adults and social media.

Yeah that fact struck me only yesterday, my entire adult life has been under this government, since I could first vote! It's hard to be able to sift through the 'facts' of what the country would be like with a labour government as it seems to swing between scaremongering and rose tinted glasses. I always consider myself relatively intelligent until it comes to politics when the 'read between the lines' messaging of manifestos and canvassing goes right over my head. No idea what I'm going to do on Thursday, reading as much as possible between now and then in order to attempt an informed decision.

BIossomtoes · 30/06/2024 19:35

Sometimes you have to choose between your head and your heart @Life2Short4Nonsense. My heart tells me to vote Green, my head says it has to be Labour to oust the Tories. I can’t afford to indulge my heart this time round.

labour will definitely make me poorer and guess what, I AM ALL FOR IT. Being poorer won’t ‘make my life worse’ because I don’t measure the value of my life by how much money I have. It’s also about whether the community I live in is thriving and if I live in a country I’m proud of.

I’m a high income earner (>£500k p/a) and every tory budget makes me richer whilst people down the road from me literally starve and the company I work for arranges christmas gifts for families who can’t afford them…. It makes me sick!

My kids are in private school. I’ll pay the VAT. Fine. It’s a choice, and a luxury one.

so what if inheritance tax increases. People who are counting the value of inheritances whilst their parents are still alive are the absolute worst. So what if I get less money from a house that hasn’t been sold yet.

I want to live in a country in which ALL children have the same opportunities my kids do. I want to live in a country where we are kind to people in their hour of need. I want to live in a country where the NHS works, teachers are properly paid. Those things would make ‘my’ life better.

The woman only spaces point btw is just weird as I’m never sure what these spaces are supposed to be. Having been unlucky enough to be the victim of a sexual assault a few years back, there were no female only spaces. I was treated by a wonderful male doctor. The legal team who convicted the creep were men. We live in a world with men.

Which means you were mostly educated under Labour. Receiving a better state education than kids in the 90s after 18 years of underinvestment.

CurlewKate · 30/06/2024 19:43

I've lived under both labour and Tory governments. Labour's better. Because they at least want to make things better for everyone. They may not always manage it, but at least that is their intention.

I used to be in the 1% earners. Then Brexshit happened and my work moved abroad. So I can categorically say, now that I earn nothing, that I am much worse off under the Conservative government.

@Xsnsnshsjs we are similar, though children were state educated and grown now. But I feel the same as you about my wealth and good fortune. An increasingly unequal society is bad for everyone. We want a well educated population at every income level, and we want the people who do our dirty work (carers for example) to be paid properly. We'll all benefit from that.

S0livagant · 30/06/2024 20:02

Hoppinggreen · 30/06/2024 19:53

What is the middle? Those around the median household income or something else? I was just wondering as I've seen people on high incomes described as middle on here before.

ByDreamyMintNewt · 30/06/2024 20:08

Similar position to the OP. Both teachers in a rural area - I work part time in a primary state school, husband works 6 days a week in a small secondary boarding school. Our own children go to state school and I'm pregnant with our 3rd child. We are ok financially but not super well off by any means. The school is a big employer in our local area, not just for teachers but for grounds staff, caterers, sports coaches etc. and it does do lots of outreach with the local state schools.

His school will be hard hit if the changes come through. There is not a high demand of teachers in our area as there are simply not many schools in a 40 minute radius. If he loses his job then we will not be able to afford our mortgage and will be pretty screwed.

I also can't vote conservative as they have managed the public sector so badly. But I don't think this policy from labour is the answer.

To me its people on around £60k pa to £120k pa.
I am sure its not "middle" if you analyse statistics but to me thats what i would consider a middle earner. To some thats a lot and to others its not much

ByDreamyMintNewt · 30/06/2024 20:11

I see people saying they earn £100k plus, to me that sounds super wealthy, so no wonder you are not concerned. You'll be fine regardless.

Have a look at this thread on Twitter to see what Labour did when they were last in power. I’d like to see what positive things the Conservatives achieved over their 14 years because I can’t think of anything.

I'm pretty sure even the bottom figure of £60k is above the median. I'm finding a median of £32k (2022) after income tax, NI and council tax.

Luddite26 · 30/06/2024 20:24

When Major's Government introduced VAT on fuel bills for everyone there wasn't as much outrage as there is on this proposed policy.

Meadowtrees · 30/06/2024 20:29

Xns- er, well yes in half a million a year you can afford to pay more tax!! Most of us can’t so I’m not sure of the relevance of your post (unless it’s just a stealth boast).
