Unless absolutely SHEDLOADS of people who voted Conservative in 2019 vote Labour this time.

That's right, isn't it?

Some people clearly didn't read the Ops posts properly! 😄

In what way?

Zonder · 05/07/2024 08:43

OP knew Labour would win.

OP knew Labour would win.

OP said Labour wouldn’t win “unless absolutely SHEDLOADS of people who voted Conservative in 2019 vote Labour this time”.

That didn’t really happen, did it? Labour won because lots of people voted against the Tories, not necessarily for Labour. It’s a bug/feature of our electoral system.

It was a question @SnakesAndArrows.

Intended as a discussion starter.

Seems to have worked in that regard.

It certainly did. You posted a hypothesis. Everyone got into a big fight, some of it irrelevant to your OP, but fun nonetheless.

Your hypothesis was disproved. I think you might be quite happy about that (both the result and the fact that it didn’t take the shedloads). Someone else decided that I didn’t understand your original post. Minor skirmish. Bonus pic of a sadface JRM and someone who is probably happy to have lost his deposit. What’s not to like?

I may be delirious from lack of sleep at this point though. 😁

verdantverdure · 05/07/2024 13:21

All's well that ends well.

God bless us every one

WRT the splintering electorate on the left, there was a more optimistic view in the New Statesman. If it were close, people might vote differently/actually vote.https://www.newstatesman.com/politics/labour/2024/07/labours-base-is-not-as-shallow-as-it-seems

Yes, I have heard about people not worrying too much about voting because it seemed like a "done deal"especially if an obstacle was in the way such as no voter ID or a postal vote non arrival.

And a LOT of people voted how they wanted and sod the local result because they believed Labour would win overall. Hence the surge in Green, Reform, and Independent votes.

And obviously a lot of people like me in the Blue Wall Tory Heartlands of the Home Counties voted tactically for the Lib Dems. Or Green.

Which might well be the reason for the low turnout.

It might. I also think that the last at least 5 years of Tory chaos have fed the ‘they’re all the same’ narrative and people couldn’t be bothered because ‘whoever you vote for the government gets in’. Hopefully a few years of ethical leadership will turn that around.

verdantverdure · 11/07/2024 20:08

I think I can see the difference in just a few days. So hopefully.

The reckoning is that more than 400,000 people may have been prevented from voting by the corrupt voter ID requirement.

Shock indeed. Some 445,000 voters may not have been issued with a ballot paper in the general election because they did not have the correct identification, polling has suggested.

And then there's all the missing postal votes.
