And the other EU countries shifting right

And the UK having had a government with far right tendencies for many years is shifting leftwards, which is more important to me because I live in the UK not the EU.

Really? I can’t see that at all. I lived in one of the most affluent areas of the country with some of the best schools and moved to another fairly affluent area. Both areasx have a much higher degree holding population than average. Both the Tory and Reform support in both areas are much stronger than Labour.,

Anyone I know who has seen any of the debates and has any critical analysis skills was basically flabbergasted at Starmer’s appalling performance(s). He is not a man to lead the country., To paraphrase Jane from London on Nicky Campbell’s radio show, every time Starmer opens his mouth all we get is a complete load of twaddle. He’s going to be an embarrassment on the world stage.

Embarrassment? You only look at the filming emerging after the D day commemorations to see that that is not the case. He is widely respected, whilst all the Conservatives could produce was the sheer embarrassment of having to send the Foreign Secretary to meet with world leaders because the Prime Minister had buggered off for a TV interview.

What? This is a really weird take.

Debates where you have to give basically pointless soundbites are very different to proper conversations with other leaders.

And I haven’t said that’s not the case

I still don’t think anyone can claim education and globalisation shifts countries left otherwise we wouldn’t be going against the general trend

They haven’t experienced Brexit. Young, educated people here can see very clearly the opportunities the right has robbed them of and they’re angry about it.

To be fair anyone under say 25, won't know what Brexit robbed them off. My DS is that generation and he and his friends are still going abroad for gap years, going to Uni and looking forward to getting into work. They don't seem more or less anxious about the future than any other generation.
Those I know in their early 30's have good jobs here in the U.K. but also in Canada,Australia and the States.

Zonder · 30/06/2024 08:42

While some are throwing around the idea that the rest of Europe is moving right it is important to remember that in Scandinavia and Poland there was a return left.

’Throwing around’

Yes if you google away from mn Labour threads many political commentators are talking about it

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 29/06/2024 22:40

It’s not that they won’t come out, it’s they don’t exist.

They could also be undecided on Labour 😂

Bobbotgegrinch · 29/06/2024 22:38

You think Elton John is what will win labour the election?

Labour are winning at this point no matter what. There's nothing "weak" about them right now.

Elton I love him love his music but megastars don’t live in tbe real world .. all they can see is their issues with music etc
once he has to start paying higher taxes that honeymoon with Kier will end

They are , and they too are overlooking the point made about Poland and Scandinavia.

You don't think he already pays really really high taxes??

Did you see Bill Bailey also backing Labour? I was too shocked at his lack of long hair to take notice of what he said exactly.

Eh?

If you read beyond Labour threads you’ll see many are commentating on EU shift

Oh, the irony!

Why have they gone to other countries to find these great jobs??

Lots and lots of research shows we have very anxious young people- just about the least happy in the developed wold, in fact.

No, she means deflection away from the point about Poland.

Thoughts?

GrantShappsOtherUserName · 30/06/2024 08:55

Oh, and meant to say , the young I speak to (many) are also acutely aware of the fact that they are set to be the first post war generation who are less well off than their parents.

Largely, they blame Brexit and austerity for this, not immigration - although of course some will.

Sorry, did you not understand? I'll explain simply.

Some countries in the EU elections swung left. Not all swung right. That's known as a fact.

You countering this by saying that commentators have said is actually a deflection from the fact that some countries nevertheless swung left. They may have said there was a right swing. However not all countries followed that pattern.

Hope that helps.

All research shows the pattern of those voting Conservative and Labour has changed markedly since the 1980s.

Education is a known predictor in voting patterns, visible in the US, UK and Europe. Of course it is not a fixed rule, but the patterns are not under dispute.

You are kidding?

My Dd 17 is still furious about Brexit.

It shows you are ignoring what commentators are talking about.

If you have a look you’ll see more on France and other EU countries shifting right than focusing on Poland

Oh wow, has he cut his hair? Goodness.

It seems to come as a revelation to some posters that there are people, even the mega rich like Elton John, whose sole aim in life isn’t to pay as little tax as possible. Some of us would prefer to be taxed more and have public services that work.

SeriaMau · 30/06/2024 09:10

I will not be voting Labour and none of my friends are.

I’m guessing that you don’t have many friends then.

Zonder · 30/06/2024 09:11

I'm not ignoring that many countries swung right. I am correcting the view that all of Europe swung right.
