Unless absolutely SHEDLOADS of people who voted Conservative in 2019 vote Labour this time.

That's right, isn't it?

I can only imagine this rumour was put out by Labour HQ.

It doesn't though, does it. One person v the broader well documented trend.

And she hasn’t won the seat yet. Who knows who will until the early hours of Friday morning.

this was the total votes for each party in the 2019 election

This time if labour remove their candidates from strong Lib Dem constitutes - then the Labour Lib Dem vote isn't split as the likelyhood is the labour vote will go to the LIB dem and then they get in instead of tory. Same for Lib Dem - they can remove their candidates from places to give labour a better chance of getting a seat rather than split the vote.

The whole election is both highly depressing and intriguing.

You can’t call Mumsnet Londoners leaches. London is mainly Labour as shown by the mayoral elections.
Some of the poorest people in the UK live in London. The richest are noticeable but few in number.

No the Tory government are the leaches!

Sorry my post is a bit unclear, too late to edit now unfortunately.

So far as I can see, the only question is how much they will win by. Will they win with a majority or a super majority? If they win with a super majority, god help us. We’d have a socialist government free to do as it likes. Starmer supported Corbyn ffs and has been filmed actually describing himself as a socialist. I don’t know what people think they’re going to get on July 4th. It isn’t going to be a sensible, middle of the road government, that’s for sure. Immigration will spiral out of control, and what’s left of the countryside will be covered in disgusting rabbit hutch houses all jammed on top of one another. Taxes will go up, but the rich will just move abroad or hire clever accountants to squirrel their money away. So the burden will fall on the hard-working chumps in the middle. It wouldn’t be so bad if we could trust Labour to spend that money wisely. But we all know they’ll blow it on ‘diversity and inclusion managers’ and welfare cheats (like my lazy, selfish cousin). And some people are actually excited!

I do think there'll be an increasing right wing following with younger generation of white kids.

I think you're right. Their prospects are worse that what they were for generations above them. We hear loads about millennials being worse off (lower wealth at the same age than previous generations, property issues) - which is true. But the younger generation has it even worse. They're angry (rightly). The danger is that will be pointed at the wrong targets.

It does seem that both Right and Left have failed to address immigration as an issue (even if you just believe it's a non-issue, it's not perceived as that by many voters so like it or not, it's on the political agenda). Screaming stop the boats on one side, and calling it racist to discuss it on the other (a generalisation I know) has not helped imo.

indeed.

MikeRafone · 29/06/2024 21:39

I am glad you were against it at the time, it has caused untold issues for the ME and the West ever since.

there has been terrible meddling by the British and American gov. for the last 100 odd years - with regard to Blair it was woeful, but he is certainly not the only leader of gov. to do so and the history was already made

CharlieBoo · 29/06/2024 21:39

1992 labour were well ahead in the polls under Neil Kinnock.. Tories still went on to win despite the recession.

Wasn’t there a headline by The Sun newspaper about turning the light off if labour get in?

I won’t vote Labour but if you think they won’t win you must have been walking around with your eyes closed. I absolutely do think it will be a landslide as well .

MikeRafone · 29/06/2024 21:42

considering only 8.5% of the entire country is already built upon, this is a tad dramatic....

you can't really be serious that 92% of the country is going to be built upon in the next 5 years - get real

And she hasn’t won the seat yet. Who knows who will until the early hours of Friday morning.

It’s a Labour safe seat. All she has to do is post a video now and then saying Labour have no plan or whatever slogan is on the grid this week. She’s in no danger of winning.

At the moment. In politics there always seems to be a lot of swings and roundabouts imo.

What seems to be different this time from 1997 - I don't remember the 70s elections - is Reform. I can see them attracting the young right wing vote in future, as is happening across Europe. And if so, the Conservative Party will have to make a choice. Do they move further right and risk alienating their more centrist members, or stay put and risk their supporters aging out. Moving to try to engage UKIP supporters doesn't seem to have won them long term support.

cavalier · 29/06/2024 21:43

theappp · 29/06/2024 18:52

They will win. Unfortunately. Because the torie vote will be split between torie, labour and Reform.
Also a lot of the previous SNP voters will be voting labor.

I agree … but reform just don’t see that they are diluting the votes .. many just don’t get it

thats not his concern though - he wants to be an MP so he will sit in parliament and then can divide the tory party or cross the floor - he wants to be PM and the rest of his ltd company is not a concern to him

We need them to win by enough to form a majority government. The last thing we need after the current shower is a split parliament who can’t get anything done

That’s my worry.

In the UK you only need a majority of 1. It doesn't really matter after that. It might make logistics easier but it doesn't give any more power. The benefit would be a bigger pool of people to select ministers from.

A few weeks ago in my town, a woman in her 80s fell and (we suspect) broke her hip. She was in a lot of pain. People stayed with her and covered her in coats while she lay on the pavement. The ambulance took six hours to come to her. Six hours as she lay on the pavement whimpering. But she was conscious and not bleeding so it wasn't a priority.

We can't keep going like this. That's why I (and many other) are voting Labour.

There was this in 1992. It’s not beyond the realms of possibility that The Sun will do the same this week.

Haven't the Tories destroyed the economy enough?

A lot of people won't forget how they failed to cap the energy companies during the winter of 2022 and how the following year those companies published their record breaking billions in profit.

https://www.endfuelpoverty.org.uk/energy-profits-hit-420bn-in-recent-years-as-standing-charges-rise/

I will never forget my 78 year old neighbour in floods of tears when confronted with an exorbitant bill and her pleading, "I was only trying to keep warm."

Energy profits hit £420bn in recent years as standing charges rise

Energy giants have pocketed over £420 billion in profits since the energy crisis started according to a new analysis of company reports.
