General election 2024

Voting if you’re classed as high earning

time2changeCharlieBrown · 18/06/2024 12:17

just wondering if you earn high or wealthy who will you vote for?
I’m not wealthy but we both do have a higher than average income, however 7 dependents and a large mortgage takes everything!! So on paper we may look it
but realistically we budget for everything

anyway we live in a wealthy area with a lot of rich people (a lot lot better off than us, as far as I can tell anyway )
and they all said not voting labour as would be bad for them and all now detest the tories so all going Lib Dem or reform they keep asking me but I said I don’t know and I still don’t

got to say I’m not as clued up on politics as them and I struggle with understanding it all and what to believe
(maybe none) any one help me get a better understanding, everything I read I find overwhelming

Lib Dem. Live in an area where a donkey wearing a blue rosette would get in, there is no point voting Labour (and we haven't even had leaflets through the door so I think they agree!) but I can't vote for the idiots currently in Westminster.

Our MP is actually very good and everything you would want in an MP, other than his voting record 😁

Gassylady · 18/06/2024 16:13

Labour here unless the independent comes canvassing and is convincing. Boundaries have been redrawn and I know the female labour candidate/incumbent is strikingly pro women’s rights

Newnamesameoldlurker · 18/06/2024 16:14

Our household income is about 400k. DH is voting Labour but we're both a bit irritated that Starmer hasn't ruled out taxing high earners more, as opposed to taxing wealth (increasing capital gains or inheritance tax). Despite v high household income we haven't built any wealth as our outgoings are massive and we are supporting family members (neither of us are from families that have wealth to pass down). So it's a bit of a slap in the face to potentially be taxed even more as half our income already goes on tax.
Nonetheless we recognise that we're extremely well off and we do care about others so would never vote tory. I would like to vote green as I care a lot about the environment, but they seem totally distracted by gender identity nonsense which is demoralising. None of the options appeal to me, really.

Labour. My voting isn’t based solely on self interest (ie costing me more), unless that self interest aLeo extends to not wanting to live in a country being ruined by successive Conservative governments.

Well said.

HappiestSleeping · 18/06/2024 16:23

I was a 1% earner until the Conservative Party buggered the economy with Brexshit and the Trussterfuck.

Have to vote strategically to get them out in my area. I am politically homeless these days though.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 18/06/2024 16:24

DH will vote reform.

I hate labour, but having done a blind survey based on my answers I apparently align more with the labour manifesto so I suppose labour. I just can't stand Starmer.

Labour, always have. Although dh is the high earner, not me but also votes Labour. He is happy to pay tax to increase the standards for everyone in society. We have in the past had periods where we have really struggled so appreciate how important a functioning welfare system is.

cryinglaughing · 18/06/2024 16:32

BIWI · 18/06/2024 15:53

@cryinglaughing what do you mean? Labour isn't reforming council tax.

Have I mixed up who is doing what? 🤔

I thought they were revaluing all properties, rebanding and changing the costs (I'm guessing not downwards 🤣)

Happy to be corrected.

It is beyond comprehension that anyone with even half a brain could even contemplate voting for a party containing Nigel Farage.

Although they should probably be tebanded at some point as people living in stately homes don’t pay a lot more than people in a large modern detached.

Sue152 · 18/06/2024 16:55

I'm not rich but all the very wealthy land owners round here have up their signs saying vote Tory.

StopInhalingRevels · 18/06/2024 16:58

Could someone explain to me why people are saying labour are anti "women and children" please?

angelcake20 · 18/06/2024 16:59

I'm not keen on any of them, and would usually plump for Lib Dem as the best of the lot, but, tactically, Labour are the best bet to get the Tories out here, so that's who I'll go for.

Euromonkey · 18/06/2024 17:00

I would urge anyone thinking of voting Reform to watch this

Remind yourselves of the company Farage keeps & the views he holds. You may not like the current lot but really do you identify with what Farage stands for??

Who is Nigel Farage?

Whatever the rights and wrongs of Nigel Farage having his elite bank account cancelled, let’s remember who he actually is

GameOfJones · 18/06/2024 17:07

DH will be voting Conservative.

I can't bring myself to vote Conservative after the partying during lockdown and I'm not convinced Rishi actually wants to win the election to be honest. But I refuse to vote for Labour, Lib Dems or Greens because of their stance on women's rights.

So I'll be voting for the Social Democratic Party. They're gender critical and my local candidate seems a decent sort.

sweatband · 18/06/2024 17:10

Labour here, earn over £150k jointly - time for change

CurlewKate · 18/06/2024 17:10

Labour. Because I am voting for the society I hope to live in, not simply for my own personal benefit.

JennyForeigner · 18/06/2024 17:10

Labour. I'm a natural labour voter anyway but just so relentlessly fucked off with pouring money into the pockets of the private sector and pretending that'll fix anything. Water companies and trains and house builders.

I have no problem with higher taxes - that's down the road anyway, but there is only one of the two parties that could form a government that isn't going to spunk it straight into dividends for their mates.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 18/06/2024 17:14

Icanwalkintheroom · 18/06/2024 12:25

Labour. I have the money to cushion me - I ought to make choices that are best for those who don’t.

This.

I'll be voting Labour. DH will vote either LibDem or Labour, depending in who he thinks is the best bet to beat ourTory MP (Therese Coffey)

Upallnight2 · 18/06/2024 17:18

Reform

AnxiousTwitterati · 18/06/2024 17:27

If we lived in a more equal society, rich and poor would benefit.

jackstini · 18/06/2024 17:27

In top 5% of earners - going Labour

I cannot vote for the current shit show who have screwed up our country for the last decade plus

Reform would be best for us financially - personally and business wise - but I have a conscience and refuse to give a vote to a party led by a man who has spouted so much racist, xenophobic, sexist bollocks
