Voting if you’re classed as high earning

time2changeCharlieBrown · 18/06/2024 12:17

just wondering if you earn high or wealthy who will you vote for?
I’m not wealthy but we both do have a higher than average income, however 7 dependents and a large mortgage takes everything!! So on paper we may look it
but realistically we budget for everything

anyway we live in a wealthy area with a lot of rich people (a lot lot better off than us, as far as I can tell anyway )
and they all said not voting labour as would be bad for them and all now detest the tories so all going Lib Dem or reform they keep asking me but I said I don’t know and I still don’t

got to say I’m not as clued up on politics as them and I struggle with understanding it all and what to believe
(maybe none) any one help me get a better understanding, everything I read I find overwhelming

Was a Labour voter in my youth. Then Tory after it went to shit with the previous Labour government. Now I'm reading the policies carefully of all the parties to see what best aligns with what I want to happen to this country. Looking like Reform at the moment.

itsjustGin · 18/06/2024 13:59

I've got as far as not conservative

TheSixQuarks · 18/06/2024 14:00

@BeRealOrca out of curiosity what parties are involved in your tactical Reform vote? Is it less a vote for Reform and more an anti-Tory vote?

TheSixQuarks · 18/06/2024 14:04

We're both high earners and I am voting Labour (although wish they would say more on Brexit while understanding they can't.)

KevinDeBrioche · 18/06/2024 14:05

Labour. We are in a Labour/ Green marginal seat, Green are not good for women and our Labour candidate is.

hairbearbunches · 18/06/2024 15:39

@behindthemall what are the additional cohabiting rights? I haven't come across this, but haven't read the manifesto yet.

GingerPirate · 18/06/2024 15:44

Reform.
My lifestyle won't be much different
voting for anyone.

Echobelly · 18/06/2024 15:45

I guess we're high earners these days - voting Labour. I couldn't give a toss about the possibility of higher taxes - this is not a high tax country and I could absolutely afford to pay more. It makes infinitely more sense to tax me than to try to claw back money by removing or cutting benefits for the worst off. As well as being cruel it's ultimately expensive because it creates costs from dealing with poverty and the physical and mental ill health that results. Whereas people like me can pay more tax and still clothe, feed and house our families and frankly not even have it affect our lifestyles.

keylimedog · 18/06/2024 15:46

Conservative - our local Conservative candidate is actually really good and has done so much for the local area in previous roles, he also has policies based on local things we think are really important, so that swings it for us.

YaWeeFurryBastard · 18/06/2024 15:46

Both of us probably Labour, although I’m not thrilled about it as they seem best of a bad bunch. Have voted Tory previously but won’t be this time. I’m surprised at the number of reform votes!

shrodingersvaccine · 18/06/2024 15:46

Green, to try to signal the importance of green policies to the parties that get into power. But I'm in a seat predicted to be safely LibDem. Will never forgive Lib Dem for the tuition fees and backing the Tories in coalition, so won't vote for them. Labour aren't SD enough for me at the moment, though I have voted for them previously.

Couldn't care less if my taxes go up, if the roads are fixed, schools are educating children, hospitals are running, I can get a dentist, we can have libraries, swimming pools and community centers, and if the worst happens to me and I can't work for some reason, I'm not plunged into immediate, grinding poverty because there's a social care system in place. I've lived in high tax rate EU countries. It works better.

I don't know how anyone can look at... everything and vote Tory. After 14 years of this, and the mess they've caused how can anyone be like 'Yes, they have promised not to raise taxes (more) so let's do more of this'. Reform are openly racist, rightwing idealogues and they are dangerous.

cryinglaughing · 18/06/2024 15:47

Not Labour on their council tax reform alone.
That will screw many people over who can ill afford it.

Chickatease · 18/06/2024 15:49

I would vote labour but they have no chance in this area so am going lib Dems as they have a good chance. I don't vote purely based on my own interests

BIWI · 18/06/2024 15:53

@cryinglaughing what do you mean? Labour isn't reforming council tax.

behindthemall · 18/06/2024 15:55

hairbearbunches · 18/06/2024 15:39

@behindthemall what are the additional cohabiting rights? I haven't come across this, but haven't read the manifesto yet.

There was a thread on here about it, and the manifesto doesn’t actually say much more than I said on my last post - but the point was akin to giving marriage-like rights over the house (and maybe other assets) to co-habiting unmarried couples under the guise of “protecting women”…

But actually it’s treating women and sub-intelligent women with no agency who are unable to choose whether or not they want to marry the person they are living with, so instead foisting a legal position on people passively.

The shadow general attorney has made comments about men being able to leave women they live with without any rights to a home, and this not being right and women shouldn’t be forced to marry. With no concept that there may be wealthy women who don’t want to share their property with the cocklodger when they break up with him.

I will add that I still have some doubts given the behaviour of some Labour voters previously. Having spent years being told by quite a few party members I’m a thick, soulless racist does make it more difficult to be sure that’s where my vote belongs.

TheaBrandt · 18/06/2024 15:59

Two horse race here Tory v Lib Dem Labour a wasted vote. So will vote LD though strongly disagree with their anti women’s rights agenda. Their local mp is very responsive and helpful so she deserves to win to be fair. Also even if I was a former Tory which I’m not everything in such a mess you just couldn’t vote for them. Its embarrassing.

NomenNudum · 18/06/2024 16:02

not heard about the cohabitation policy but it sounds eminently sensible to me in keeping a roof over the heads of women and children when men walk out which is surely statistically much commoner

Shannith · 18/06/2024 16:03

Labour. Always have always will. Like many other people I vote in what's best for other people, not me.

I live however in probably the most Tory area in the UK.

I'm pretty sure I'm the only Labour voter in the village.

YorkNew · 18/06/2024 16:04

Green Party.

minipie · 18/06/2024 16:05

Labour - I don’t agree with all their policies but in my seat they are the best chance of ousting the Tories and right now that’s my priority.

Summerhillsquare · 18/06/2024 16:10

Labour or green. What use are tax cuts to me, when what would improve my quality of life is good primary care and functioning public transport. No amount of holidays or stuff can compensate me for my health or time.

I was going to vote Tory as absolutely can't vote Labour, but didn't really want to as the Tories are awful. So have now changed to Reform - some excellent ideas coming from that team I must say. Hopefully Reform will hoover up the Tory vote in our area. We are high earners in the SW.
