General election 2024

What will Labour do early?

Davidchecksall · 14/06/2024 17:03

We can safely assume that Labour will form the next Government. Many of their proposed policies will take a long time to show a difference. They want to appoint many more teachers, but it will take time to develop ways of retaining the ones we have and enticing back those who recently resigned. etc. Recruiting new teachers will take years.
They can impose the VAT on some schools quickly,
Making it easier to change 'gender' or 'sex' can happen quite quickly.
What do you think they will do to show they mean to make changes?

Any mind readers on here?

Ah well, I guess we will have to wait and see which of the Tory made fires they will manage to put out first.

SlowerMovingVehicle · 14/06/2024 17:36

What will Labour do early? Fuck off out of my local council, hopefully.

Realistically, they'll continue to get their contractor mates to build stuff, fail to reinstate proper supervision of local authorities, close a few more leisure centres, fail to scrap Ofsted and keep telling us how fabulous they are.

Euromonkey · 14/06/2024 17:41

Stop the Rwanda deportations. That will be the most immediate policy change.

The rest will be an uphill struggle. There is so much to sort out!

Hopefully they will sort out the brexitbtangle of paperwork so businesses can cut costs that were imposed due to brexit by negotiating new trade deals definitely not join the sm so will call it something entirety different

StripedPiggy · 14/06/2024 17:52

The first thing the New Labour government did after taking over in 1997 was give independence to the Bank of England to set interest rates. This wasn’t in their manifesto or publicised before the election because it would have been market sensitive but it had been worked up with the Treasury & BOE beforehand.
We may see something similar this year, a big announcement immediately after taking office to signify real change, but for obvious reasons we won’t know until 05 July. If I were a betting person I might put a few quid on some sort of new trade and / or border agreement with the EU, but that’s speculation.

Euromonkey · 14/06/2024 18:33

I don’t think they will pull any gimmicks or unplanned announcements, just don’t think that’s Starmer’s way. This is why people call him boring or predictable but after the chaos I think it will be good to have a Government that have set out what they want to do & stick to it.

We’ll have to wait & see…

the vat is the thing that’s got people’s backs up on this site - as most have kids - but it wasn’t mentioned in that debate rayner was in. I’m not sure it’s going to be quick

Do you mean the vat on private schools?

Most people don't bs e kids in private schools.

Settle with the junior doctors and reorganise the NHS.?

Euromonkey · 14/06/2024 18:46

@paasll the VAT has got the back up mostly of people with children being privately educated. Plenty of state school parents also on here that will be happy to see it implemented as the sooner it is the sooner breakfast clubs will start running in state schools

Yes and get round the table with the rail unions and get a deal done to end strikes after the years of disruption

It will not happen.

They have not got the money to do this - the Drs are not going to just roll over for Starmer.

I hope that they do tackle reorganising the NHS though - it needs re-thinking and it could be brilliant.

Araminta1003 · 14/06/2024 19:38

I thought they might announce a deal with the French on handing the boats better to stick it to Sunak and his lot. But the French now have too much on their own plate so that won’t happen.
For me, the best outcome would be no power from any right wingers whatsoever - then the EU will be happy to reengage with us in a constructive way. There has to be a better arrangement for all parties there at this point. If we want to actually grow and be safe that will be the best outcome.

Agreed and no plans whatsoever to do with the ones who are refused asylum

Why can't most parents pay for their own breakfast clubs? Presumably if breakfast club is needed, 2 parents are going to work at that time.

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 14/06/2024 19:44

Put up taxes by stating they were very igorant and did not realise the state bank balance was so bad and they have no option but to tax those on above avg wages ie more than 33k

They will also intiaite a review of the council tax bindings and that only means one things - massive rises in council tax if you live in a house you have looked after and improved/extended or labour thinks it should be in higher band. The will also create new, higher tiers of banding

The will offer the docs around 22%, thus opening the floodgates to hyperinflation as all other public sector inc NHS workers want their bit of rise

Euromonkey · 14/06/2024 19:45

If they are refused asylum then they will have been legally through the refugee status determination process and therefore will be deported (unless successfully appealed) this is otherwise known as a functioning asylum system.

Really? Really? I know it’s inconceivable to most parents to not feed their children but through circumstances plenty don’t. Either through neglect or because they can’t afford to. Not all children have 2 parents involved in their upbringing.

Do you not recall Marcus Rashford explaining how he went hungry during his impoverished childhood (as his single working mother couldn’t afford to feed the family despite working) and how intervention was needed during Covid to ensure these children were fed (which the Tories were reluctant to do & voted against 🤦‍♀️)

As a society we need to look out for these children.

Araminta1003 · 14/06/2024 19:59

“Really? Really? I know it’s inconceivable to most parents to not feed their children but through circumstances plenty don’t. Either through neglect or because they can’t afford to. Not all children have 2 parents involved in their upbringing.”

Most kids who do not eat breakfast get up too late. And get to school too late as well. So how exactly are these kids going to get to school for 7.30am? They are the same kids whose clothes are not washed either. Should we add some washing machines to the breakfast club area too so the teachers can start a laundry service as well?

Araminta1003 · 14/06/2024 20:01

More urgent than breakfast club is NHS dentists in schools in vans. They just need to fund the dental vans. NHS dentist can make a lot of money if they can get through loads of kids at once.
The problem at the moment is that I have to book a dental appointment for my kids like 5 months in advance and I have to pay my dentist privately so that they can even stay on the NHS list! And they are meant to have the fluoride applied or their teeth decay.

Euromonkey · 14/06/2024 20:03

This is why I think the state system is important so people aren’t closed off in a bubble and believe that deprivation is not having a sky subscription.

Starmer sats NHS dentistry for children is a key area they want to address, he mentioned visiting a hospital recently & the main reason children were admitted was dental decay.

@Euromonkey - whatever the proposals are for state schools, they should actually speak to teachers and teacher unions about it first. We cannot increase their work load further, that is an absolute no no! And last time I checked the “brushing school kids” teeth campaign went down like a lead balloon.
If there is breakfast club, do they have to brush their teeth there too? It is all connected.
