What will Labour do early?

Davidchecksall · 14/06/2024 17:03

We can safely assume that Labour will form the next Government. Many of their proposed policies will take a long time to show a difference. They want to appoint many more teachers, but it will take time to develop ways of retaining the ones we have and enticing back those who recently resigned. etc. Recruiting new teachers will take years.
They can impose the VAT on some schools quickly,
Making it easier to change 'gender' or 'sex' can happen quite quickly.
What do you think they will do to show they mean to make changes?

@BIossomtoes Not all landlords own slums and like to evict honest, decent tenants on a whim. Most landlords are also honest, decent people.

However, the title of this thread is 'What will Labour do early?'. Banning S21 is something they've said they'll do on day 1 which was the purpose of my post.

You and others think this is great which is your prerogative.

I think it's a rushed, ill thought out idea that will cause more problems that it solves unless a robust framework to replace S21 is put in place first.

Great post!!

No LL wants to lose a good T and that is fact. Unless they want to move in, sell up or have other important needs, ie help family, and or selling their home and easier to sell if chain free

Every LL we know has long-term T's as it cost effective for both sides. ie often LL's charge less than market rates in these cases

Most LL's won't don't have a problem with changes to Sec21 - but most fear the dreaded awful T's and then talking even longer to get rid of them

There needs to be a sensible balance as I said, no LL wants to evict a good T. A "good T" is a T that psys their rent, reportson time any problems and communicates early if they cant pay the months rent etc

I fear LL will again lose out and I guess some went under during the covid !!

Thinking about public transport again one good thing this Government have done is introduce the £2 capped bus fare to help with cost of living.

I hope whoever runs the next Gov also think about public transport subsidies & improving services. I was recently on a train midweek during the day with no seats available for an 40mkn journey. Instead of wasting money on HS2 they should be ensuring trains run with enough carriages to meet demand.

I do wonder what on earth visitors to this country think when they turn up to find hugely expensive train tickets don’t necessarily mean you will get a seat and there’s no space for luggage!

Privatising the trains definitely did not create an improved service.

I think very early on they shall be looking to build better proposals with the EU our economy depends on it

It's bad news for any landlord that wants a tenant to move out for whatever reason. Eg you've rented out your house for a couple of years while you work abroad, you want to sell the property etc
At the moment Section 21 gives the landlord a framework to end the tenancy with notice and work with the tenant. Abolishing S21 pushes everything to the courts which will make it much more painful and costly for everyone involved.

You don;t need section 21 to evict a tenant if you want to move in yourself or sell the property!

Davidchecksall · 18/06/2024 12:10

@BIossomtoes So they might have to raise a tax to cover the problem?

They’ve quite categorically said they won’t do that.

izimbra · 18/06/2024 18:31

They've said they 'won't raise tax on ordinary people'.

Startingagainandagain · 18/06/2024 18:42

@Katypp

I have a house and was privately educated.

I do base my vote on what is best for the country and the majority of people, not just my own interest...

I think they said working people.

Yes you do if you want to do it properly.

BloodyHellKenAgain · 18/06/2024 19:20

Yes you do if you want to do it properly.

My point is that there are alternative legal routes in those circumstances!

croydon15 · 18/06/2024 22:15

Rebrand Council tax,.abolish 25% discount for single occupancy and raise all other taxes apart from IT National insurance and VAT for a while.
Anyone working hard and earning a reasonable amount will be hit.

Paul2023 · 18/06/2024 23:54

I work for the Prison service. Under the conservatives, they closed around 15 - 20 prisons and built about five, but mainly awarded them to the private sector.
Are Labour less likely to close prisons?

Paul2023 · 18/06/2024 23:58

They have said that they won’t change the council tax rules , which is disappointing.

I think that the way council tax is done in this country is so unfair.

For example we base council tax on property prices from 1991.

Yet a single person in a property only gets a 25% discount, when they could live next door to a family of 6. The family of 6 obviously uses more of the council services.

How is this fair ?

Paying per person was tried before, it was called the poll tax, it caused riots and alot of people went to prison.

Council tax isn’t even consistent across the country. In Wandsworth and Westminster a band d property with two adults is less than £1000 a year. In Nottingham and Rutland it is more than £2500. Rutland also happens to be the lowest funded county in the country from the government so it’s residents are having to make up the shortfall.

I read in labours manifesto they are reforming business rates so that’s an area being looked at

Triestre · 19/06/2024 06:44

SlowerMovingVehicle · 14/06/2024 17:36

What will Labour do early? Fuck off out of my local council, hopefully.

Realistically, they'll continue to get their contractor mates to build stuff, fail to reinstate proper supervision of local authorities, close a few more leisure centres, fail to scrap Ofsted and keep telling us how fabulous they are.

Ha, they give work to their mates. Pretty sure they do whilst going on about the emergency PPE decisions.

Triestre · 19/06/2024 06:48

I wonder if the right gets in France. How would that affect our immigration? Everywhere in Europe turning right and here….

Davidchecksall · 19/06/2024 10:45

To Re calculate Council tax and have a fair result that is widely accepted is a huge task, I have been told. Many of the Left would like a tax on value.
I think they will quietly work on it ready for their second term. Which will come.
When Tony Blair won he altered the status of the Bank of England pretty quickly, it wasn't in the Manifesto at all.

I thought they might announce a deal with the French on handing the boats better to stick it to Sunak and his lot. But the French now have too much on their own plate so that won’t happen.
For me, the best outcome would be no power from any right wingers whatsoever - then the EU will be happy to reengage with us in a constructive way. There has to be a better arrangement for all parties there at this point. If we want to actually grow and be safe that will be the best outcome.

Have you completely missed the fact that most of the EU members have swung massively to the ‘right’ * in the past two years? Holland, Italy, Portugal…the Belgian central -left bloke has had to resign because his party was given a resounding kicking, Macron has ‘ gone to the country’ for similar reasons, the German ‘ central left’’ are in serious trouble. We are the only large economy who are embracing the same old centrist globalist ‘ socialism’ in Europe.

  • right = paying some attention to the local and national concerns of the existing electorate.
Tracker1234 · 19/06/2024 10:55

VAT on private schools is only the start. They will come in and then claim its worse than they thought and this and that will need to happen.

There is a veiw amongst many on MN that regardless of what the fees are they will be paid. What will happen is that some of our most famous schools will be full of Russian money, Middle Eastern Princes and bursaries will be cut. If the remaining parents see that bursaries are still being given out there will be uproar.

NOT MANY OF US HAVE UNLIMITED FUNDS!

The new teachers will take years to come through and from what I can see a lot are leaving so where are these people coming from.

What is a working person in terms of earnings? Someone who earns £100K, £50K??

If they put CGT on primary house it will stop the market DEAD. No one will move so there will be no Stamp Duty paid either. All those older people in large houses will stay where they are.

FriedGold · 19/06/2024 10:59

I think everyone has really high hopes for this new government. And I think most of those people are going to feel really let down in a year or two when the sunshine and rainbows they’re expecting don’t materialise.

Nobody’s expecting sunshine and rainbows. Anyone with half a brain can see this country’s in deep shit that will take a long time to clear up. Starmer’s been absolutely explicit that this is a two term job.

BIossomtoes · 19/06/2024 11:06

All those older people in large houses will stay where they are.

We do anyway. 🤷‍♀️

Tracker1234 · 19/06/2024 11:19

I agree Blossom. Until some crisis occurs. Been there with both parents until they couldnt live on their own but the bar is very high regarding whether they have capacity or not and the elderly persons wants and needs will always come first regardless.

The Non Doms will move to another country and they will take all their spending in fancy restaurants and the West End Shops with them They really arent people who live round the corner from their Mum who they cannot leave.

I met a councillor recently and she told me that the biggest issue for our large council is adult social care. They can model all they want but someone needs care they need moving quickly. Not when the money is there.

They will increase council tax and offer less. My general waste is collected every three weeks now and I brought an extra recyling bin. I go once a week to the tip. Its not the end of the world but its another reduction in the services.

I am not clear about VAT on school fees for people who reside in another country. Can they claim this back in some way?

Well that's as may be, but the items I highlighted won't affect you directly.
YOU are not paying school fees - the fact you were privately educated is irrelevant in this context.
And you might live in a house, but do you own a buy to let, AirBnB or business?
That was the question.
So it's all very lovely saying you think of others not yourself, but that's not really being tested, is it?

They actually said "working people". Oh the irony!
