General election 2024

If you're an undecided voter, what are the issues that are stopping you from deciding?

As an 'undecided voter', I was watching the Sky News interviews last night and felt myself warming more toward KS. When he started talking honestly about the possible impact on his kids...he suddenly seemed really human, a dad who wanted to pursue this opportunity but wanted to protect his children from the worst of it. However, I'm still undecided.

My politics are usually centre/middle and over the years I've voted Tory and Labour...basically whichever party I felt most aligned with my values.

All I know for sure is that I don't want more of the same and while I am definitely warming to Labour (as well as my local candidate who seems nice) I'm not keen on some others within the party.

I worry that by voting in the seemingly nice people, that it's a door opened to something I can't get on board with. You could equally say the same of the Tories though!!

So I'm wondering if there's any other 'undecided voters' out there (from any side of politics) and what are the issues/policies that are preventing you from being able to make a decision?

I would be more concerned where the Tories are going to find £Billions of savings in welfare budget from.

It is 100% clear that if the Tories get back in our NHS, Dentistry & all public services will be cut to the bone and we will be getting a 3rd world service.

We should learn from our European neighbours such as Scandanavian countries and places like Austria & Germany. They pay relatively big taxes but they have amazing public services, can see a Doctor/ Dentist at drop of a hat and their roads and infrastructure are superb.

You cannot squeeze blood out a stone despite what the Tories may tell you. If you want world class public services and infrastructure you have to all be willing to pay that bit extra or else borrow £Billions.

The Tories have destroyed our public services, NHS and wrecked the economy thanks to Liz Truss.

Just to add that in these countries, certainly Scandinavia, you are charged each time you see the doctor. There is a ceiling to what you pay, if you have chronic diseases, but it's quite good as it stops people going for minor ailments, clogging up A&E and missed appointments. We should try it here.
So it's not just paid for by the higher taxes.

I can't find one party that represents the majority of my views:

Conservatives - don't want to vote for National Service, cuts to university courses, Rwanda policy, increase on tax brackets for pensioners but not for working people.
Labour - not convinced by their fudge on the Cass Review and their treatment of Rosie Duffield. Plus their flagship policy will have a huge negative impact on my family (school fees vat).
LibDem/Greens - no way due to their views on gender ideology, but some of their individual policies are interesting.

Still no closer to deciding and time is running out! Although tbh it'll make no difference as I am in an extremely safe labour seat (will definitely vote though).

So hard isn't it?
I have no idea!
But, just to add re the national service - this is something lots of countries (including France, Germany, etc etc) are discussing bringing in due to the Russia threat. I suspect this is not a UK-centric issue put forward just for the sake of it by Rishi but it's a general trend. Several countries who did stop national service a few years ago have recently reinstated it.

Given that you don’t even live in this country that possibly is vanishingly small, isn’t it? MN isn’t the whole country, it’s a very small, self selecting sample.

There are over a million active users of Mumsnet.

twistyizzy · 22/06/2024 19:38

Lifelong Labour voter now politically homeless. VAT on independent fees which will have a major impact on us and the fact that Starmer, Raynor etc flat out refuse to engage with us means I can't vote for them. They just don't value the electorate and I believe that they will come after the middle classes hard.

A 60th of the population, most of whom won’t have been canvassed at all because seats are being carefully targeted by all the parties and a couple of dozen of whom have raised this on the doorstep. Not compelling figures, are they?

If a million isn't a compelling figure I don't know what is. Most YouGov polls survey a couple of thousand people at most.

Everyone on MN hasn’t been canvassed. Nor does it matter to all one million of them either. It’s all right to admit you’re clutching at wisps of straw.

Not sure what point you think you're making here.

Clearly this issue does come up on the doorstep, which is what you were denying.

I don’t suppose for a moment anyone much mentioned it on the doorstep until J K Rowling’s denunciation of Labour hit the news. Give it a few weeks and it will be forgotten again.

That’s the point I was making.

I want to vote labour, I’m sick of the conservatives and feel ready for a change. However, we have a DD at private school and VAT on school fees will really hit us hard (coupled with cost of living).

So I want Labour in, but the additional cost for us makes it hard to vote that way.

Yes this for me too.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 22/06/2024 21:35

BIossomtoes · 22/06/2024 20:53

And it has been pointed out that you are wrong. You are free to believe that no one ever raised this on the doorstep until JKR said she isn't voting Labour. But you are still wrong.

I doubt that's true. I brought it up with one of the Labour candidates before the local London elections whenever they were - last year or the year before - and he said he'd been hearing about it a lot.

That may well be the case. The majority of the country isn’t London and it’s not even on most people’s radar here in the commuter belt, let alone in rural areas.

wellerhugs5 · 22/06/2024 22:05

I'm a lifelong Tory voter however I'm so disgusted with their lack of action over everything i cannot vote for them again.
Labour will get in. I hate KS.
I'm voting Reform. I want them to at least hear my voice.

It's a bit strange to claim to have knowledge of what is on most people's radar in the whole commuter belt and the UK's rural areas simply because you live in one town/village outside London - unless you have some kind of superpower.

No, I didn't. I said that I doubted that your assertion that this was a subject that didn't come up much on doorsteps was true because a local candidate told me he'd heard it a lot on the doorstep. I expressed doubt and gave an anecdote. You made a sweeping statement that you can't possibly back up.

Which is just as valid as your anecdote. Let’s face it neither of us have anything other than instinct and we’re both biased.

You don't seem to understand the difference between the two things so I'll leave it there.
