General election 2024

If you're an undecided voter, what are the issues that are stopping you from deciding?

As an 'undecided voter', I was watching the Sky News interviews last night and felt myself warming more toward KS. When he started talking honestly about the possible impact on his kids...he suddenly seemed really human, a dad who wanted to pursue this opportunity but wanted to protect his children from the worst of it. However, I'm still undecided.

My politics are usually centre/middle and over the years I've voted Tory and Labour...basically whichever party I felt most aligned with my values.

All I know for sure is that I don't want more of the same and while I am definitely warming to Labour (as well as my local candidate who seems nice) I'm not keen on some others within the party.

I worry that by voting in the seemingly nice people, that it's a door opened to something I can't get on board with. You could equally say the same of the Tories though!!

So I'm wondering if there's any other 'undecided voters' out there (from any side of politics) and what are the issues/policies that are preventing you from being able to make a decision?

I find it amazing the reasons people find to vote or not vote for a certain party. I always have and always will vote on a belief system.
If you believe in a hierarchical society where the better off flourish and keep their wealth then vote Tory.
If you believe in a more socialist system whereby the poor and more vulnerable in society are looked after by those that can afford it contributing more then you vote Labour.
It really is that simple.

The Tories have trashed the country.

Labour, LibDems and Greens are willing to give away women's rights to males. The man canvassing for Labour was unable to give a sensible definition of a woman when I asked for one. He blustered and spluttered for a bit until I shut the door in his face

Not at all sure what I will do on 4 July. I don't believe a word of any of their manifestos.

I agree with all of this. I just don’t think I can vote at all because all the parties have such huge flaws.

RufustheFactualReindeer · 15/06/2024 09:03

I like a lot of labours policies, but i think the VAT on school fees is too harsh a cliff edge (don’t know enough about the subject to say whether the whole VAT thing should happen or not)

the pension bit and future tax rises would be a concern but not enough tostop me voting for them

my tipping point is the womens rights/gender issue

and before anyone gets over excited just because i might not vote labour does not mean i will be voting tory

Springwatch123 · 15/06/2024 09:06

Does anyone else worry that Labour could have too much power with a large majority?

As a teacher I vote Labour.

As the owner of daughter I do not vote Labour.

if that is your only concern re the socials led labour party, I strongly suggest you have a good at their "no plans to raise taxes," IE if you work and own you own place, have a private pension you pay towards and savings

I'm just a little undecided but it wont by labour, tory, reform, libs, green lot

Singleandproud · 15/06/2024 09:09

My tipping point is the women's and girls issue.
Even without that there's no benefit in voting Labour after COVID there's no money in the pot to spend.

I'll be wasting my vote again as I can't bring myself to vote Conservative either.

crew2022 · 15/06/2024 09:24

I cannot accept Labour's views about trans women and how they are prepared to disadvantage biological women.
This is a serious issue for me and means I can't vote for them. Although I like some of their proposals about nationalising energy company and public transport.
Conservatives can't be trusted either but they are clearer on women's rights.
I might vote Lib Dem but that will be a waste as they won't get in

caringcarer · 15/06/2024 09:24

I'm not financially stable with no money worries, we are trying to save for a deposit and I'm on minimum wage, my husband not on much more

That's interesting that where you live it's the left behind people voting Reform. Maybe Reform will take those votes from Labour. Where I live it's the comfortable people pissed off with Sunak voting for Reform. Those votes will be taken from the Conservatives. I think if Reform gets the 6 million votes predicted other politicians will start to notice.

caringcarer · 15/06/2024 09:35

I had a Labour man canvassing yesterday I asked him why many Labour politicians didn't know what a woman was. He said it stumps him too, because he was well aware. He tried to laugh it off. I told him many people find it off-putting. I asked him about the personal tax allowance being frozen for many years and asked if Labour would remove the freeze. He said RR was keeping tax freezes that Conservatives had put in place until 2028-2029. Then spouted she wouldn't be putting up VAT, income tax or reversing the NI cuts. I asked about other taxes but all he'd say was that RR had no plans at this time for any other taxes except on independent school fees, Non Dom's and foreign people living overseas paying more stamp duty. I think he realised I was going to grill him on a few more areas because he said he had lots of leaflets to deliver so really had to go.

CharSiu · 15/06/2024 09:36

I am undecided and also in a bit of a marginal seat that has had two terms of a Conservative MP and one of a Labour MP since I have lived here. Apart from policies what on earth are some parties thinking with the candidates they field. I met the Labour candidate and I know it’s just a feeling but there was something really off with him, I got that awful gut feeling when you feel under threat. Labour also put forward a woman candidate from London a few years back who was so unbelievably wrong for this area. It’s an ex mining area and a London barrister turns up with a plummy accent , talk about get it wrong. I’m actually from down south but have been here for a long time, they are really funny about Southern accents where I live, mine is commented on all the time. She cried on National TV when the results came in and was viewed as pathetic round here.

All politicians lie and really deep down the vast majority of any colour are in it for themselves.

stargirl1701 · 15/06/2024 09:37

My issue in deciding is my constituency. The choice is SNP or Con. A rock and a hard place!

whiteroseredrose · 15/06/2024 09:51

My priority is generally the environment - river quality, rewilding, changing farming practices in the hope that our natural flora and fauna can start to recover.

But I'm also scared that we will lose the progress that we have made here with respect to keeping women's spaces safe.

The only party I agree with with respect to women's spaces is the Conservative Party; but I don't agree with anything else.

The Greens, my usual party, have a good environmental section in their manifesto, but would put myself and my daughter at risk wrt sex based rights. Same with Labour. It's there in black and white in their manifestos. And the Lib Dems.

Rumour has it that the even the Lords won't oppose if it's in the manifesto which is scary.

I'm actually considering not voting for the first time in my life.

Dancingontheedge · 15/06/2024 09:52

Animal Farm. It’s hard to tell the humans from the pigs.
Women’s rights and protected areas.
That the Green Party has strayed a long way from their original values and into areas I disagree with. I used to vote Green whenever I had the option.
That my previous confidence in Labour since I was a student in the 80s is increasingly harder to find reasons for. Their policies are nebulous and their leader is a weathercock, spinning in the wind. Like nailing a jelly to the wall.
That the Conservatives are indifferent and ineffective with solving the problems the majority of the population are facing.
There is no one I admire, respect or think might do a decent job.
And that the only politics I’ve ever seen work has been local, grassroots protests and campaigns. Not mainstream politics.
I’m voting in a safe, Tory area and I still haven’t made up my mind..

I want a massive shake up as I can see the shitshow heading for us economically. I want less posturing and more action.

I want massive investment in schools. I want a European style health system.

I want fewer bespoke criminal laws and more enforcement of the basic ones on the books. I want the police to police the streets, not social media. Hell, I want police that actually show up.

I want a focus on self sufficiency as a country and a drive to protect our ability to hear, feed and clothe ourselves. I want our armed forces to be able to handle the new world.

I want excellent libraries and clean parks/public spaces.

I don’t want politicians to be ‘human’. I want them to be logical, grounded thinkers who aren’t pushed off track by the slightest breeze of dissent or criticism.

I have a lot of wants and I doubt they will be offered.

I’m going have to read all the manifestos, see what they away, then assess whether the authors have any likelihood of keeping promises (ha!)

Please can I vote for you @Validus?

whiteroseredrose · 15/06/2024 09:59

@paolo2145 'I don't watch what leaders/parties say, i watch what they do'.

The problem is, Kier Starmer claimed to be left wing when he was appointed by Jeremy Corbyn, now he reckons he's a moderate, so he isn't consistent. Nor are any of them. So watching what they do is tricky. Which bit of recent history do you chose to evaluate?

krystalweedon · 15/06/2024 10:00

After dithering a bit I am voting Labour. There was one GE when my constituency went Tory by less that 200 votes, so I don't want to risk it.

Appalonia · 15/06/2024 10:08

I've been a lifelong Labour voter but after the dangerous rubbish they have spouted about what a WOMAN is, I really don't think I can...

If you're an undecided voter, what are the issues that are stopping you from deciding?
Pourmeanotherwine · 15/06/2024 10:18

Dithering between labour and green. Very safe labour seat ( been continuously labour since 1935).
I'd like labour to form the next government, but would love there to be some green voices in parliament to try and keep climate change high on the agenda.
I work for the NHS and desperately want to get rid of the Tories.

This summarises my position too, except that I can't vote for the LibDems as they are worse than Labour on women's rights.

I’d vote for you! That’s exactly what I want to see.

Im a floating voter too. Like Labour but put off by the women thing and being called Tory scum. Don’t like how the tories have lied over the last few years. Lib Dems don’t seem to do or say anything of meaning

DecafFox · 15/06/2024 10:25

I feel no party will offer progressive, authoritative sweeping reform needed, that are grounded in the right values vs pandering to populism. Don't see anything i like across: healthcare, education, green infrastructure, immigration, asylum seekers, national security, social security for my generation and younger (anyone under 50), inequality/cronyism/quiet corruption, competent fiscal and economic management, funded policies and managing debt etc.

So, still undecided.

1dayatatime · 15/06/2024 10:28

I am definitely on the fence or more accurately in complete despair at what is on offer.

The intellectual ability and real life experience especially on economics is shockingly inadequate across the majority of political figures across all parties.

Whilst KS and RS both appear to have good intentions neither have the strength of character to be up to the job of PM.

The Conservative policy seems to be "OK we screwed up the last 14 years but please give us another 5 years because we think we can get it right this time" but have no real plan on how to do so.

The opposition parties approach is simply that the Conservatives have really screwed up the last 14 years and we're not the Conservatives. But equally we have no real plan on how to do things better.

It really is quite depressing and doesn't bode well for the next 5 years.

1dayatatime · 15/06/2024 10:31

Now that's an approach and set of policies that I could definitely support and give my vote to.

It's fairly straightforward and I can't see why nobody can offer this.

SwordToFlamethrower · 15/06/2024 10:34

Womens rights, child safe guarding.

ScribblingPixie · 15/06/2024 10:37

I'm in Labour/Lib Dem constituency. My Labour MP is hard working and conscientious but always toes the party line. Whatever the leader thinks she agrees, whether that's Jeremy Corbyn or Keir Starmer, so I don't really trust her. If it's tight between her and the Lib Dems I'll throw her my vote as their gender policies horrify me*, so waiting to see.
Edit: * even more than Labour's
