General election 2024

If you're an undecided voter, what are the issues that are stopping you from deciding?

As an 'undecided voter', I was watching the Sky News interviews last night and felt myself warming more toward KS. When he started talking honestly about the possible impact on his kids...he suddenly seemed really human, a dad who wanted to pursue this opportunity but wanted to protect his children from the worst of it. However, I'm still undecided.

My politics are usually centre/middle and over the years I've voted Tory and Labour...basically whichever party I felt most aligned with my values.

All I know for sure is that I don't want more of the same and while I am definitely warming to Labour (as well as my local candidate who seems nice) I'm not keen on some others within the party.

I worry that by voting in the seemingly nice people, that it's a door opened to something I can't get on board with. You could equally say the same of the Tories though!!

So I'm wondering if there's any other 'undecided voters' out there (from any side of politics) and what are the issues/policies that are preventing you from being able to make a decision?

Oh interesting, I didn't actually expect this thread to get busy. I'm a frequent name changer (but MN regular) and I checked a few times and saw no responses. However I swing by a few weeks later and here we are. I'm very relieved I'm not the only undecided voter.

**days, not weeks.

I'm still undecided. I think it'll be a vote for the 'least worst' but that's still a pretty bad position to be in.

Labour's lack of support for women's rights/gender twaddle.

I've never voted Tory and I won't this time but I'm struggling to vote labour.

@DBD1975

"If you believe in a hierarchical society where the better off flourish and keep their wealth then vote Tory.
If you believe in a more socialist system whereby the poor and more vulnerable in society are looked after by those that can afford it contributing more then you vote Labour.
It really is that simple"

The right believes in ambition and personal responsibility which the left criticises as greed and selfishness.

The left believes in equality and fairness which the right criticises as envy and expecting hand outs from others.

Same for me

For me Labour is a nope. We would not have room for more taxes of any sort and the ideologist members of the Labour Party fill me with fear. There is nothing else that is not extreme aside from conservatives and labour. I have a feeling that floater voters would get disillusioned with Labour very soon. Farage will then have a very big change in 2029. For this elections I would go better the Devil you know I think 🤔

Owner of a daughter? I have two daughters and I certainly don't own them!

🤣🤣🤣

The Tories have trashed the country.

Labour, LibDems and Greens are willing to give away women's rights to males. The man canvassing for Labour was unable to give a sensible definition of a woman when I asked for one. He blustered and spluttered for a bit until I shut the door in his face

Not at all sure what I will do on 4 July. I don't believe a word of any of their manifestos.

This is how I feel. I am so sad about it, as I am usually quite politically enagaged. But for the first time in my lifetime I don't think I'll be voting...

Nigel Farage seems to agree with you:

The man who believes in fairies? 😂

ScribblingPixie · 17/06/2024 18:07

This Michael Cashman business has made my mind up. Labour removing the whip without supporting Rosie Duffield is just two different shades of misogyny. I'm now going to be looking at the female Conservative candidate.

Scruffily · 17/06/2024 18:10

It's a real tragedy that women are disenfranchising themselves over the gender issue.

It’s their choice. I have no time for single issue voters. The trouble is that the world of pain that results from their obsession never seems to affect them.

Scruffily · 17/06/2024 18:15

I may end up spoiling my ballot, and frankly, I imagine quite a few people will, and this will show. Low turnout can be attributed to many reasons, large amounts of spoiled ballots show that people are not happy overall with any politicians.

I really don't think it will "show", because I don't think there will be large amounts of spoiled votes. People seem to be quite energised by the prospect of getting the Conservatives out, and a few people here and there spoiling their ballots over diverse single issues tells no-one anything. Contrary to popular beliefs, no-one actually looks at spoiled ballots unless the votes in an individual constituency are very close, and even then they are only looking to see whether they really are spoilt and are not interested in what essays the voters might have written on their ballot papers. It certainly won't result in politicians suddenly beating their breasts and vowing to reform because they perceive that voters aren't happy with them.

DaffydownClock · 17/06/2024 18:27

Living in a Tory stronghold with a useless MP who’s been in for around 40 years, I can’t see that anyone I vote for will make any difference 🤷🏼‍♀️

Donteventhinkofcallingmecis · 17/06/2024 18:27

The Conservatives (and probably Reform) are the only parties who appear to know what a woman is. I simply will not vote for any party that has such contempt for the rights of girls and women. HOWEVER - can't bring myself to vote Tory. Which leaves me pretty stuck, frankly.

SilverBirch99 · 17/06/2024 18:37

Not Tory , not Labour , I'm stuffed.

MajesticWhine · 17/06/2024 20:10

I am undecided. I would mostly support Labour and have done in the past but I don’t want to vote for a party that will put VAT on my child’s school fees. I would be like a turkey voting for Xmas. Even if morally they are right, I think should introduce it gradually to mitigate the impact on children’s education and allow the educational system to rebalance.
I support many Lib Dem policies but they are weak and dangerous on gender issues.
The Tories have been a shambles in recent years, and do not deserve power on that basis. The only local candidate I warm to though (and the only woman on the ballot paper) is the Tory one.

Lovesstaggbeetle · 17/06/2024 21:30

@ScribblingPixie what is this about Micheal cashman and removing the whip please.

Lovesstaggbeetle · 17/06/2024 21:35

@ScribblingPixie I've googled 😂.

So Michael actually founded stonewall itself, is a large labour doner and made those remarks about a woman who has spent 2 grand on security and it's worried about campaigning.

ScribblingPixie · 17/06/2024 21:49

He's a Labour Lord, @Lovesstaggbeetle

The SDP are gender critical if there is a candidate in your area.

Michael described Rosie Duffield as "feart" when she described her enhanced security needs meant she could not always go to planned hustings because of the danger of attack for being gender critical.

He did this on the anniversary of Jo Cox's murder and in the wake of the targeting of other MPs.

He apologised but did not tag her and the response led to Starmer quietly removing the whip.

Seymour5 · 18/06/2024 19:32

I would vote Reform this year if I could, but there isn’t a candidate in our constituency. I don’t expect (or even want) Reform to win, but I want the big two to get a kick up the backside! I live in a Labour stronghold, the Greens came second last time, but I can’t vote Green.

First past the post isn’t doing it for me.

tsmainsqueeze · 18/06/2024 19:40

Labour are who i lean towards but i can't stand Angela Raynor or Wes Streeting and i dread the thought of yet higher council tax which i think will happen with them.
I have no faith in any of them really but absolutely no way would i ever vote tory.
I have a dilemma this time and i can't see myself making a final choice til i am actually in the poll booth.
