General election 2024

Seeing as it’s anonymous… where is your vote going?

My views -

Conservative - Potentially had a tough ride with Covid & brexit aftermath to navigate. However, looking at the state of the NHS & the ever increasing price rises in almost everything… how could I vote them in again?

Labour - Almost feels like the only likely alternative. Change is as good as any? But Keir starmer does precisely 0 for me. I cannot get passionate about him.

Greens - Won our constituency a while ago, whilst I appreciate what they stand for the changes they made locally have had a negative impact on the average citizen IMO.

Reform - Nigel Farage is DIFFERENT, I don’t think that can be denied. Part of me thinks bold and controversial is what we need and the other thinks he is a brilliant campaigner and is just playing up to the people trying to act like ‘one of the working class’ to garner votes.

Where is your vote going?

I live in a very very marginal seat. I dislike Labour because I am not prepared to vote for a party whose leader thinks some women have penises. Labour is not guaranteed to win as a popular ex-Labour independent is standing. I was tempted to vote for her but we have a Party of Women candidate so that’s where my vote is going.

TemporalMechanic · 13/06/2024 15:52

I'll spoil my ballot if I bother at all.

My constituency has had a large Labour majority for many years so my vote is pretty much worthless anyway. It's not a place where a tactical choice to keep a disliked party from winning could be relevant. None of the parties appeal to me and none of them deserve my vote.

Conservative. I'd like to keep our business.

Like to keep our business what? Failing? Declining? With a smaller market to sell to?

Or, do you mean you have your own business and want to keep it going? Do you make PPE or something?

We will have to let staff go with some of the employment policies. I think we will go to all subcontractors tbh.,

AddersAtDawn · 13/06/2024 16:02

I'm guessing it's the promise that the minimum wage will take into account the cost of living so that it can be a living wage - or the application of it to everyone over 18? Or maybe getting ride of zero hour contracts?

Yes, I think it depends on how long the policies take to come in. We are on contracts to GOVERNMENT clients for 2 more years at a fixed rate so will have to let people gif we cant afford it but after the 2 years and a contract renewal, we can then happily hike the wages up :) I'm sure it will work out.

Interesting. Do you mean proposed employment policies from Labour should they win? If so, I'm interested to hear how please?

Contentiously, I think the minimum wage is challenging as employers will need to put the price up of their goods and services in order to pay it. This in turn puts the price of everything up meaning that the people on the minimum wage need to earn more to afford things etc etc. Couple this with competition from other countries and we end up with companies that cannot afford to operate here.

There will be other aspects that are similar, but in general, I can't see how anything could be as bad as leaving the EU, and the Trussterfuck.

sleepyscientist · 13/06/2024 16:10

As much as a change would be good it will be conservative for me. I don't think labour can raise enough to pay for the promises so will borrow the money and I don't want my son paying it off. I really wish there was a party standing for minimal government spending and maximum growth as they would get my vote.

I don't see where the actual working vote can go, not rich enough for the conservatives and not poor enough to fall for labours lies

Labour. I don't want to be passionate about my prime minister. I want him capable and competent and efficient. He's a chief executive.

My prediction is Angela Rayner will be PM within the year.

paolo2145 · 13/06/2024 16:31

Labour for me as the UK is on its knees at moment and we simply cannot afford another 5 yrs of this sham of a Tory Govt, who are more interested in power plays and saving their own necks than anything else.

Just look at what 14 yrs (especially last 5 yrs) have done to UK. The NHS is on its deathbed and morale amongst nurses/Doctors at all time low, Policing is a shambles, public services on their knees, roads a disgrace, cost of living crisis made ten times worst by Tory policies, a complete mess made of the few genuine opportunities of Brexit, highest tax burden sine WW2 and a Govt that partied & celebrated (and gave away £Billions in PPE contracts to friends) whilst we all suffered during lockdown.

They have lied time & time again and nothing they say can be taken at face value.

I am not expecting massive things from Labour or indeed any new Govt but even just to have a party in charge who does not have the morale's of a sewer rat would be a genuine improvement on its own.

We need a Govt who can at least have a grown up relationship with the EU and make the best of Brexit, instead of constantly making threats and alienating our closest trading partners.

Labour & Keir Starmer may not be exciting and their policies not earth shaking but to me it would be madness to vote the Tories back in after everything we have seen in last 14 years.

This line is being trotted out by Tories all over the place. It is nonsense. Why and how would this happen to a PM who is predicted to deliver a large majority?

CurlewKate · 13/06/2024 16:43

I think it's very unlikely that Rayner will be PM any time soon. I think she and Starmer will make an excellent team. They have complementary skills and personalities. I'm looking forward to it.

StormsAreNeverNamedAfterMe · 13/06/2024 16:49

I’m tactically voting

used to vote Conservative until Cameron called the Brexit referendum. Now the current party bears no relation to anyone I would consider voting for again.

Greens haven’t a chance of power. And suggesting losing our nuclear deterrent is daft.

Reform ditto no chance if power(than goodness), and are a far right joke/protest, and not a democratic party but a limited company

I want Labour

But in my constituency Lib Dem is the only with a chance of ousting the utterly useless incumbent Tory

so Lib Dem it is

plus I think Ed Davey has had the nicest campaign, really showing how awful the media focus on the big 2 parties & sadly on Reform, whilst ignoring the smaller/less radical/gobby ones. I genuinely hope the Lib Dem’s become the opposition and Conservatives are relegated to third.

It's very lame scaremongering isn't it? Seems to be all they've got. 🤷‍♀️

I assume you think it is since your original post about AR was in response to someone saying they want a PM who's capable, competent and efficient (ie Starmer)?

Stungbyabee · 13/06/2024 16:56

I would like to vote greens but will probably vote labour.

TheFairyCaravan · 13/06/2024 16:58

Labour for me.

The country can’t take another 5 minutes of the Tories let alone another 5yrs. The sooner they’re gone the better.

Farage promised to leave if (when) Brexit failed so why he’s still here is beyond me.

I honestly don’t care that Keir Starmer is allegedly boring and lacks charisma. Does that change how he can do the job? We had the “lovable buffoon” unfortunately and look where that got us. Who wants that again?

CurlewKate · 13/06/2024 17:19

@VinnieVanDog "I assume you think it is since your original post about AR was in response to someone saying they want a PM who's capable, competent and efficient (ie Starmer)?"

I think that was me. Yes, I want Starmer's competence and efficiency. And I think Rayner is competent and efficient too, but her sparkiness will balance Starmer's calm solidity. Good combo.

IClaudine · 13/06/2024 17:37

flyingvisit · 13/06/2024 16:52

Why is it a bad thing?

It isn't to me. Angela Rayner would be great as a PM. She has backbone and resilience. But the inference that there is an evil left wing plot to hijack Starmer's centrist agenda and turn the UK into a communist hell-hole is designed to frighten the gullible into voting Tory.
