Rishi thinks we've turned a corner. Does it feel like we have

Rishi keeps saying we've turned a corner, but does it really feel like we have. Do people feel better off, or less worse off.

A case in point from my very small world view. I know a mum of a 4 month old and a 3 yo who has today lost her home. The rent was put up from £600 pcm to £875. She's had to move in with her parents until temporary accommodation becomes available.

Housing is just one of the things that absolutely do not feel lime they are improving and have only got much worse under 14 years of the conservatives. So how can we trust that the next 5 years will be any better.

He's talking the words he thinks we want to hear, but why not have delivered it before if that's what they could do?

I don't see elaborate agreeing to increase the tax free threshold so pensioners aren't taxed on their state pension....

Pensioners aren't taxed on their state pension. In the hypothetical future world where they might be it will take a £2000pa uplift on their pension (compared to today) for them to pay the princely sum of £15pa. And that's likely to take at least 2 years to get to that point (so, 2026).

Now, I think it's a bit daft to spend admin resources giving the money with one hand to then spend admin resources to take it back with another but cannot see how £1.25 out of £1125 per month is going to make a difference to anyone.

My guess would be that there will be pressure by then to uplift the personal allowance for everyone as it will have been frozen for 7 years by that point, despite high inflation in that period (making it a significant cut for workers in real terms). So, even if it happens, it's likely only to be for a year or so while the allowance freeze for workers comes to an end (2028).

Taxation of the state pension is £1k away. Different taxation criteria for pensioners is a terrible policy and would just exacerbate generational friction. The simple answer is to increase the personal allowance for everyone each year. The entire taxation system is ripe for review, it’s grossly unfair and ridiculously convoluted as a result of numerous tweaks that have produced unintended consequences.

Is Labour going to tax pensions?

Pensions are already taxable.

Yes but economies go through cycles and it's been tough but like I said imo it's easing off we seem to be turning a corner and having tax cuts or reducing tax back after it was risen is to me a sign we have. It might be tiny but at least it's not going up anymore. Hence why I feel we have turned a corner.

But tax is increasing - personal allowances are frozen so fiscal drag increases tax for anyone who gets a pay rise. The only people not paying more tax are the super rich like the Prime Minister.

Alot of what you want is more socialist values which is more labour and the conservative values are more about less state intervention

For 'less state intervention' read:
Less state responsibility for provision of public services
Lower taxation for the most wealthy
Private healthcare, education, care for the elderly accessed by the very wealthy
Rapidly falling standards in state education, NHS and adult social care for those who can't afford private
Result: Welcome back Victorian Britain where there was no NHS, very basic state education and workhouses for the poor who could not look after themselves.
The gap between the wealthy and the poor will widen even more.

It's exactly what they have do e to Water companies and energy companies and public transport- sold it all off, the investment has been appalling, standards have plummeted, prices have risen dramatically and owners have stripped billions of profit from the services.

As a parent, this is hugely concerning. The Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS), the UK’s leading independent economics research institute, has done a deep dive on the Tory manifesto and says total school spending could fall by £3.5bn a year the way it's being costed. This, from the Guardian:

@LuluBlakey1 and today's Tory manifesto says they are going to save 12billion by cutting welfare.

I dip in and out of threads on here that talk about how long disability benefits take to be assessed. What do you think that might be impacted. Sorry, rhetorical question.

And for all those slating immigration. The fact is we have an aging population. Currently for every 3 working adults there is 1 pensioner. Very soon that will slip to one pensioner for every 2 working adults. The maths don't add up. We need to increase the number of working adults or decrease how much support is given to pensioners. It's really is as simple as that. And that is the issue that all politicians from all parties have to wrangle with. An aging population is incredibly expensive, and there are not enough economically productive adults to support them.

We don’t necessarily need more people working - we need more people earning higher wages, ideally top tax rate level. You could double the number of workers, with low paid immigrants doing the 1m+ jobs that no-one wants to do, and it would add very little to the revenue generated, where a 10% increase in higher rate earners would generate more tax revenue. We need high quality, high paid immigrants - doctors, dentists, scientists, or even self-employed plumbers and plasterers can earn a damn good income.

Might stay up on Election night just to see his privileges face when he (hopefully) loses his seat

He'll be on his way to the airport to his nice house in California.

No things are shit. I am one of those quitting work before my state pension age and living on lowish savings. Everything is getting worse, including work. I have had enough and am living for today instead.

user1984778379202 · 12/06/2024 07:26

This is so, so damning and should finish Sunak off. He just about manages to suppress an eye roll as he lies that the D-Day celebrations 'went over' and that's why he was late for the ITV interview.

He then massively offends parents saying that because his cared about his education, he wasn't allowed Sky TV. So anyone who does have a subscription and lets their kids watch doesn't care? He's so out of touch he might as well be conducting his campaign from Pluto.

I do agree so many things have declined since 2010 and can understand wanting to live for today btw but I’m curious why are you leaving before you get your pension? Is it an issue with your workplace?

It seemed also to be in relation to having to ‘go without something’ as well, which is even worse!

I honestly don’t think he has any awareness of what everyday life looks like for most people.

Meetingofminds · 12/06/2024 11:45

It was expected and hardly breaking news. It will be better in the next quarter.

That doesn’t help Sunak and if he thought it would, why call a snap election?

Yep, if predicted why on earth call a snap election and risk losing and it seeming like the next guys made the difference?

No issue with my workplace. I think things are going to get worse, so I want to enjoy things while I can.

Because it’s a harder sell in mid winter as you well know, people hate going out to vote, especially the elderly - and who knows what’s going to happen with Putin.
