Not a good look, was it?

Obviously a diplomatic error, but I do think there are a lot of hypocrits in the UK pretending to care about D Day.

Many thanks, just what I was thinking but did not post for fear of being attacked.

Importantly, this fiasco and I hold equally to blame Sunak, his advosoris and even the great Mr Cameron for not reminding him how the media would see this as all politicians care about their image

Sunak was wrong on all eavels, he has apologised, not sure what else he could other than to resign which he wont

Nothing wrong with the deleted post, except that it was factually incorrect.

Since when was that a reason for deletion? Political threads would be like colanders if that was the case.

Posters quoting my comment and reminding me about Indians contributions to the WAR. I'm well aware of thay - but remember back then India was under British colonial occupation and I doubt their citizens had any choice. Ask them today to contribute to any of your wars, and they'll tell you where to stick it.

These events are about remembering those who never returned. No a lot of them didnt agree with being there, but they gave their life and that should be respected. Even more so surely. And actually conscription across the board meant that most had very little choice in whether they were there or not.

pointythings · 07/06/2024 13:53

I'm not sure that actually staying away from a posh and tasty lunch in order to spend extra time with real veterans can be described as 'antics'. I would describe that as 'decent, human, prioritising what really matters'.

But you do you.

The poster is deliberately trying to divert and place blame on Labour, its just another version of "they are all the same, might as well stick with the Tories"

bombastix · 07/06/2024 14:00

Cameron has just posted a defence of Sunak which is nothing of the kind! Drafted carefully to make it sound even worse.

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 07/06/2024 14:03

May be his mind was somehwere else
The media is lacking a story but Sunaks misadventure has stoked up many from the hard, right wing as it gives them an excuse to rear their heads

The vast vast majority of the criticism isn't from the far right, its from the centre.

This is the point. The events are for peace. They are not a glorification. The tradition of a leader bowing in commemoration in Britain has a long history, to show that the leader (who has the power to conduct wars and may control the lives of many) understands the responsibility and the sacrifice of those who bear out his or her decisions. This process has happened across Europe for over a century. Rishi Sunak should read a few history books

Other than resign (which as you say he won't) there isn't anything more he can do now. I don't expect to live for another 43 years (although it is possible in theory) but I will keep your memory alive by reminding people of Sunak's poor behaviour for as long as I can, just as you are so keen to recall events from 43 years ago.

Indeed - MN refused to remove actual lies when I reported them on various threads.

National service requires our PM - whoever they are - to stand with international leaders to commemorate D-Day.

It is a privilege and honour to have the chance to be involved in those commemorations.

I expected the Prime Minister to attend.

Not to prioritise an interview with ITV - scheduled for next week.

It's tawdry however much you dress it up.

100% this. Its a privilege and an honour. And as PM, his duty to represent the UK in paying respects to all those who gave their lives. End of.

bombastix · 07/06/2024 14:08

DildoHarding · 07/06/2024 14:04

Where?

I think it is a tribute to the way he is that he thought on reflection he wished he had stayed in France and instead of digging in and defending himself he just came straight out and said on reflection I wish I had stayed longer.
But to be fair, he was at the Portsmouth event with all the veterans., gave a brilliant speech, he was at the British event at our brand new built commemorative centre above Gold Beach in Normandy where he was with the veterans, gave a fantastic speech.
He always represents our country very well abroad and he had a longstanding plan to return after that and we are in the middle of an election campaign so that is not surprising.

That is your prerogative, friend!!!

Sunak did wrong and just shows he is not a good politician nor does he have good advisors, otherwise they would have done what was needed just like many politicians do, EG, show up for the sake of their image and that is a fact but one that is hard to prove

We all know where some politicians stand on our nuclear defence and what some think of Putin and a few think of the situation in Israel/West Bank/Gaza etc

The bottom line, this event has manged to wake up the right wing again, and that worries me

Piggywaspushed · 07/06/2024 14:13

A propos of not much I have seen the 'donkey jacket' IRL. It's in the wonderful People's History Museum in Manchester : if anyone is after a day trip, I recommend it.

Ooops sorry I got caught out - he's now the biggest lost cause in a history of lost causes and he was to be the final straw that broke the Tory's party back maybe for ever. Some legacy for our Prime Miniature.

It’s a statement that makes Sunak look very small.

Would that make him Gill sized ?

I wish it would destroy him but I fear not he will up sticks and circulate in the mansions and yatchs and private planes of the super rich of which he is one and will no doubt get even richer in the process. He will never face the mighty wrath of the man or woman in the street, but he will have finally destroyed the Tory party I would thank him for that.

Hit the nail on the head.

The issue with Rishi is that he sees himself as part of the international global super rich elite as much as he sees himself as a Brit. SO its OK for his wife to benefit from non dom tax status because lots of the others do and those that can't claim it (like Philip Green) send their wives off to live in a tax haven to avoid the taxes the "little people" have to pay. Its OK to build a swimming pool in his back garden whilst cutting LA budgets so public swimming pools have to close because all his rich mates have swimming pools in their back gardens too and public swimming pools are only for the "little people" to use as they can't afford their own (the fact that many can't afford a house and live in the insecurity of the private rental market or in over crowded social housing is probably beyond his imagination). Come the autumn he'll probably be spending even more time with his wealthy mates.

He's not the first PM to come from great wealth (given that at one time most came from the House of Lords) but times have changed. The Camerons (OK nothing like so wealthy) got this with Sam buying clothes at M&S to wear at party conference (and even that back fired on her) and holidaying in Cornwall and Spain. It was one of the rather charming idiosyncracies of the late Queen that despite her great wealth there was an element of war time frugality in her private life - cereal in tupperware boxes etc and one of the things the Style & Beauty crowd love about the Princess Royal's ever reworn wardrobe.

RIshi didn't stay because he thought a token showing his face was all that mattered and then he could get on with what his priorities were because he thinks that he's more important than the ordinary men and women who worked on and fought in the D Day landings. If anyone needs a dose of modern history lessons its Rishi but he wouldn't see that because he thinks that STEM is all important as it will lead to making more money than humanities and arts.

So what is your sentence for Sunak in that case

Do Michale Foot change his ways, did he apologise???

Michael Foot is not our incumbent PM seeking election. Michael Foot died in 2010 at the age of 96 and so is not relevant to what is being discussed here.

If you want to chat about fashion choices of party leaders in the past, MNet has a History topic you can take it to. Or maybe S&B. This is the General Election topic.

GogAndMagog · 07/06/2024 14:56

I think the interview was to deal with his Labour tax lies from the debate.

He really isn't of this world is he,

Has one of his kids got a school place in California? He's said it's not true that they will move there but he has shown he can lie with the best of them

TooBigForMyBoots · 07/06/2024 14:58

I cannot get my head around how this happened?😵‍💫

What made Sunak think his presence at the International D-day commemoration was optional? Who told him it would be OK to do a half day or not go at all? Did no one around him see it was an awful idea? No one?

WTAF?🤯🤯🤯
