Sunak has definitely just lost his own seat, hasn't he? His opponent in Richmond must be absolutely delighted.

That is not certain, but it may not help him. There were some veterans interviewed from his constituency who did give the impression that he had taken an interest previously.

Unless this is the point. He wants to bugger off to the US to continue his hedge fund/ shorting currency/ betting career to make himself even more money, but has said he will still be a constituency MP and feels he cant backtrack, so is trying to get himself sacked. Someone however said that the Americans are hugely patriotic, and he may well have shot himself in the foot with the hedge funds too.

I think if Boris Johnson tried to start a career over there, it would last as long as it could until someone remembered he had renounced his US citizenship.

I notice the sneaking in of "...and his aides".

Media sharks assemble. Looks like there's gonna be some blood in the water soon. Presumably in time to flood the Sunday headlines and try for a great rest next Monday.

The reason Sunak didn't attend from the Times

I wonder if Brexit is so literal in the minds of Sunak and his aides that anything that is not British in the most reductive way is not worth it.

The whole thing reveals an unpleasant mindset

The reason Sunak didn't attend from the Times

Dear lord. Is he really trying to say that he needed to be told that the D Day event that happened on the actual beaches wasn't a "French event" just because those beaches happen to be in France?!

Apologies if I'm repeating stuff as I haven't read the whole thread, but I can't help but think about when JC was annihilated in the press and by the Tories for wearing a dark navy waterproof coat in the pissing rain during the Remembrance Sunday ceremony. There were a lot of people on MN who were horrified. The reaction was ridiculous at the time. I'd love to see how the Tories horrified by that are squaring this circle...

I think that makes a lot of sense. The Tory Party have become so insular that they think an ' international ' event for world leaders is not as important as just the British one. The PM of the UK is meant to be representing the country on an International stage, yet the PM, snd the party don't consider the rest of the world as important. On the plus side for him, his Brexity Reform Voter base don't care about our standing in the world either. Jingoism and isolationism disguised as patriotism. The worst thing is, that it wasn't as if he ( and his aides) didn't see it as as important as some pressing Parliamentary business, but they didn't see it as as important as a pre recorded electioneering interview justifying his lies, ir as important as sticking to agreements made between all parties to leave two days free of campaigning. He thought it was more important to sneak an interview early when KS was in France.

Scruffily · 08/06/2024 10:41

Just as well we didn't decide that what was going on in Europe in 1939 was optional and "not a British event", really.

Scruffily · 08/06/2024 10:44

I'm amazed that he somehow think it is mitigation that his leaving early was pre-planned. Surely if anything that makes it worse? If he had to leave unexpectedly because of something pressing he had to deal with, that would be much more forgivable. Making a considered decision to leave early just for a TV interview is inexcusable on any basis.

BIossomtoes · 08/06/2024 10:54

According to The Times ITV offered him slots on Friday and Sunday and were keen to record later so the interview would be more current. I wonder if they’ll even bother using it now because events have completely overtaken it and nobody will believe a word Sunak says.

bombastix · 08/06/2024 11:16

The more I see of Sunak the more confused I am about his motivation. Why did he want to be PM so much? I also start to wonder why he lost to Liz Truss - did members see this real person as we are starting to see him? There is some story here we have no idea of. He is horrible at politics but his personality is also quite grating and tetchy.

It's like when Liz Truss wouldn't say if President Macron was a friend or foe. The small minded insularity is shameful.

The UK is fast turning into one of those brain dead people who go into court insisting they are "freemen of the land" and therefore not subject to any laws.

One should be careful with the phrase D-Day dodgers.
The 8th Army were known as the D-Day dodgers during the war, a name they loved with ironic pride, they were at the time engaged in fighting in Italy.
