Tonight's TV debate Sunak v Starmer - any predictions?

CallingOccupantsOfInterplanetaryCraft · 04/06/2024 16:44

Anyone up for a watch thread? Maybe even debate bingo. I know I know, don't threaten me with a good time. (Bingo suggestions: natural party of business, Labour has no plan, end the chaos, Rayner will take over, assorted references to Starmer's time as DPP probably blaming for Jimmy Saville again, inflation is down etc etc.)

At this point I seriously doubt anything like this will remotely change the game Nick Clegg style. I read somewhere the only way Sunak could come out of this ahead in the polls is if Starmer pulled off a mask scooby-doo style to reveal he's Jeremy Corbyn, which admittedly would be great telly.

I'm so fed up with the endless rhetoric but will definitely watch later anyway.

They should give them their allotted time and then turn off their mics.

That would be amazing tv Grin

Sunak is coming across like an entitled prick who doesn't like to be questioned

Oh come on he’s a Barrister, what is stopping him versus Sunak?

You certainly can't speak over people at court. It just isn't done.

I'd quite like to pay more taxes . . .

Yes me too, if it was promised it would go to NHS, education, social care I would happily pay more tax.

And me. And I’m a pensioner.

Me too.

Happy to pay more tax to ensure properly funded public services and I am far from
rich.

What an embarrassment on both parts. Is this really the best choice we can have? And the disingenuous way they keep repeating the audience members names…horrible. So faux.

Absolutely. It’s awful. 🙈

This is the real man. He does not like questions. It is a huge flaw in a PM

SuePreemly · 04/06/2024 21:34

Rishi is very ungentlemanly. I didn't think he was a typical private school boy, but he really is showing all the traits.

allowstatistical · 04/06/2024 21:34

ThatCrackIsReallyMoreish · 04/06/2024 21:31

Rishi is rude, arrogant and full of bluster. Starmer appears to have much more integrity despite his less charismatic personality.

Totally agree with this. Starmer isn't the most charismatic or traditionally smarmy and political but he has more integrity than I've seen in a long time.

You might until you need care - at which point you’ll be needing every penny. I don’t begrudge the elderly having concessions. Getting old is shit - and they have paid many years into the system.

If you can’t afford care the state will provide it.

Working people are struggling to afford to pay their housing costs, their childcare bills, afford the basics of life.

A pensioner with a private pension may have a higer income than your average worker - they shouldn’t have a reduced tax rate.

? He’s changed jobs. Quite some time ago 👀

Hate to say it but Kier seems weak and like he’s about to cry

I disagree I think I think it's more the other way round at the minute. Rishi seems desperate.

MaryMaryVeryContrary · 04/06/2024 21:35

I think you’re all underwhelmed by Starmer so want to blame Sunak

I am as well 🙁 I’ll still be voting Labour but Kier, for a barrister, is not doing well here.

LumiB · 04/06/2024 21:35

Appalling I'd pensioners pay tax, they already did when they worked. Essentially a double tax!

Fizzadora · 04/06/2024 21:35

Libra19752 · 04/06/2024 21:31

Why shouldn't pensioners pay tax on their pension?

Pensioners pay exactly the same tax as everyone else apart from the NI element. They have the same personal allowance as those working. I'm not claiming my state pension yet but I'm still paying plenty of tax on my private pension.

Anxiousheartbeat · 04/06/2024 21:35

It’s not credible how many people are acting like Starmer is not equally as bad at speaking over Sunak and Sunak is over Starmer.

they both look like twats

He seems more confident and happy to ‘take up space’ but unfortunately it’s a dog eat dog thing so he’s being heard and Kier isn’t

Totally!!!

He seems to think the way to win a debate is just to shout lies over and over and ask someone to answer a question without letting them answer.

He's like a stroppy teen

JigMap · 04/06/2024 21:36

I’d happily pay more tax. If I knew it was going on better state education and healthcare I’d pay it gladly. It worries me in fact when they say they aren’t going to raise taxes or NI because I’d like to be reassured that I won’t be forking out for private healthcare in future, and that my state pension is safe.

People just blindly believing he’s not also being a twat for some reason

Nowanextraone · 04/06/2024 21:36

Starmer really isn't coming across well. He doesn't answer anything.

Sungai is arguing for a higher personal allowance for pensioners.

MatterhornMartini · 04/06/2024 21:36

Ohhh immigration.

Justbetweenus · 04/06/2024 21:36

The pensioners paying tax is a projection of what might happen (to inflation/triple lock and tax bands) over the next 4 years. It’s not even a given and certainly a bridge that can be crossed later if there’s money to fund it 🙄
