Would this be such a bad idea? I hate labour and tories. But I don't know enough about Reform.

If Le Pen form a government, they might solve our problem by reinstating France's borders to tackle their own illegal immigration problem.

You’re more likely to find people leaving France to U.K.

In the same way us nearly getting tougher moved people from U.K. to Ireland

I don’t think so. The far right loonies are bad news. If anything they’ll want just the French nationals in France and everyone else out. The UK is a great place because of the no ID cards and free healthcare. Get ready for more of the people you don’t want. I support immigration to be clear.

EasternStandard · 25/06/2024 08:14

What’s to stop Le Pen resolving their camp issue by reducing drones, police and security around that border?

It’s an easy win electorally and realistically what could U.K. / Labour do about it?

As if they're currently making any attempts to stop people leaving France...

Every illegal immigrant that leaves France will save them €1+ million over the illegal migrant’s lifetime when you factor in housing, healthcare, benefits, pensions, old age care, etc.

It really is a case of pass the parcel.

DuncinToffee · 25/06/2024 08:24

Seeking asylum is not illegal

They do make a fair bit of effort if you read up. And they stop half

‘55% of small boats being intercepted by the French authorities in 2022’

Can’t find 2023 figures easily. You’re right though it is easier to just pass the issue along, I think a far right party will have the mandate to do more of that.

People don’t stay in camps for fun they are awful places. If a far right gov wanted to clear them out enabling Channel crossings would be a quick fix

We also grant about double the many at 60% to their one third. No idea what’s going on there but 60% ish percent in U.K. is a pretty high chance

Fawful · 25/06/2024 09:15

Where do you get that figure of each "illegal immigrant" costing France 1 million euro, @ThisOldThang?

Wasting your time, posting facts. Not, something Reform voters are interested in.

DogsDinner · 25/06/2024 09:20

@Alexandra2001

People coming across the channel make up about 5% of immigrants. They’re pretty irrelevant in terms of numbers. The government has control over the other 95%.

Correcting terminology isn’t really resolving the issue though and the shifting political landscape could make it very difficult for the UK

We would have no way to counter Le Pen using the U.K. to solve France’s issues with migration

MrsSkylerWhite · 25/06/2024 09:25

I don’t see migration as an “issue”. I see it as a necessity. The UK has been built on/by migrants.

Is there a number crossing the channel where you might find it uncomfortable? Or are you fine if U.K. becomes top end point for traffickers and it’s ok to keep going up

I suppose some will feel ok with it but we might find it difficult as other countries become more hardline

Fawful · 25/06/2024 09:32

Correcting terminology may not resolve issues, but talking shit is a non-starter, surely?

Immigration and trafficking are two different things.

would you care so much if they came by plane instead?

I’m aware hence the question to pp

MrsSkylerWhite · 25/06/2024 09:39

A tiny proportion arrive via traffickers. Problem is easily solved by opening up safe and legal routes. Dog whistle politicians have no interest in those, though.

No country is doing this for obvious reason. Did you think Starmer would resolve it this way?

It’s not feasible, you cannot meet demand. France, Italy can’t either hence why you won’t see this at any point

You’re certainly entitled to your opinion, and can vote accordingly. I think your assertion that the U.K. has been built by immigrants is a bit wild. Our infrastructure has been built up over centuries. It’s really only in the last 25 years that we have had mass immigration.

MrsSkylerWhite · 25/06/2024 09:51

” It’s really only in the last 25 years that we have had mass immigration.“

Romans, Vikings, Saxons, Normans, Plantagenets, Huguenots, Irish, Russian Jews, Poles, Africans/West Indians, Ugandan Asians, amongst others.

But hey, what did the Romans ever do for us? 😁

Actually it's only in the past two years that it has skyrocketed:

I’m pretty sure my great, great grandparents were part of a huge wave of immigrants from Ireland in the 1840s.

DuncinToffee · 25/06/2024 10:13

You can thank Brexit for the increase.

Remind us again who championed Brexit 🤔

I am sure you will be using the correct terminology from now on.

Refugees, Asylum seekers, not illegal immigrants
