General election 2024

Farage has announced that he'll be making an announcement...

Westfacing · 03/06/2024 12:16

... an 'emergency' announcement, no less.

Presumably to announce he's finally plucked up courage to put his money were his big mouth is and stand for Parliament, after bottling it!

Apparently half of Britain class themselves as working class - nowt wrong with that - imagine if every single one of them voted for Reform

I can see it. The biggest 'Turkey Christmas' ever, gridlocked street parties of utter futility.

A bit like Brexit.

Why do people say this when they have different views? It's really sad. As other pp said, insults do nothing, discussion does

Edited

It's true, and I apologise for it. I thought the post I was responding to was tongue in cheek, so I thought I would be too.

I haven't actually seen anything on this thread that states what he's said that's been so awe inspiring, merely that he had said some awe inspiring stuff. It would be nice to have a quote or two so that we can discuss the merits (or lack thereof). I don't think I've ever heard him say anything sensible, although I concede that his delivery is charismatic.

Let’s not bang the drum for right wing government in Europe. It’s a poor history.

Labour will be compelled to be tough on legal migration not just because of numbers but also their union backers. The Tories have backed cheap immigration for work into the country for a long time. It’s not a secret that Labour would like better working conditions and salaries. I don’t actually think they will have much incentive to be as liberal as the Conservatives have been, they will probably restrict some migration quite quickly. It’s always assumed that Labour want to keep migration up or as it was under the EU (lower and less likely to stay than now). Will they be tougher on visas? Yes. It is in their interest to do so. And they are prepared to recruit a state workforce to deliver it apparently.

New Labour opened the immigration floodgates to 'rub the right's nose in diversity'*.

They are ideologically married to mass unskilled immigration. There's no way they're going to 'get tough'.

* Andrew Neather, a former government adviser and speech writer for Tony Blair, Jack Straw and David Blunkett, said the aim of Labour’s immigration strategy was to ‘rub the Right’s nose in diversity and render their arguments out of date’.

bombastix · 03/06/2024 22:24

That was 25 years ago. New Labour are old. There is an element within Labour that is illiberal on immigration. This isn’t about boat people. It’s about numbers in,numbers out. And to a lesser extent, who comes in.

Mrsdyna · 03/06/2024 22:27

He is essentially old Tory. The conservative party is totally lost.

noblegiraffe · 03/06/2024 22:37

Charlie2121 · 03/06/2024 21:56

Starmer isn’t very popular now in the face of virtually no opposition so his days are already numbered.

Labour as a whole haven’t really attracted any voters because of what they are offering. People are gravitating to them because they don’t want the current Conservatives.

If all the right of centre voters can once again be brought together under one banner they will likely oust Labour. How long it takes for that to happen is anyone’s guess however in many ways the bigger the defeat in July the quicker it is likely to happen.

You only have to look to the rest of western Europe to see that left wing governments are living on borrowed time.

People are gravitating towards Labour and not Reform.

What makes you think the right of centre would coalesce around Farage?? His speciality is dividing not uniting and plenty on the right don't want what he's selling either.

MsJinks · 03/06/2024 22:38

Farage wouldn’t be allowed to stand for any other party with his history of racism being so public. It is of course this that appeals to some people - they know he’s genuine in wanting to reduce immigration, and would choose to be ultra harsh (which wouldn’t be allowed but it is always good to talk without needing to walk!). This must make the supporters overlook the rest of the many issues with Farage/Reform. Of course though, even if he gets to be an Mp he will have little to no affect on Labour’s policy and legislative choices as such, but he can agitate and be obnoxious in the Houses of Parliament much as he was in the EU parliament. I dread the thought raised on here that such a party could be in power by the 2030s.
No party will (or hopefully would want to) address immigration to the extent that Farage and followers would say was required. It would be impossible to run the country - so Farage will endlessly have a platform to make his cash and feel important until people wake up to the fake and grifter he is with no care for anyone but self - it did happen with Boris I guess.
I find it frightening and sad the way we and Europe, the west, appear to be going - I read it goes in cycles and this often happens in the 20s of a century before circling around back to more tolerant views - I just hope we don’t drift on to last century’s 30s.

They are already panicking and announcing new visa restrictions if they win. It will not be enough to make the Conservatives win. Farage will just take the opportunity to discuss migration more.

That's OK then as he never turned up there. His attendance record was the second lowest, only bettered by a less able MEP who couldn't physically travel. In the interests of balance, I concede the point that Westminster is a bit nearer and has pubs nearby.

OK.
I don't understand what positives Reform bring to the country. It's all negatives and scaremongering. How will they make my and my neighbours lives better. Most of my friends and colleagues are immigrants or children of immigrants so that doesn't interest me. I like green energy. I know a lot about it (to degree level and working in the field) and don't like their anti environment stance so what else is there for me?

TheFairyCaravan · 03/06/2024 23:18

I despair at people, I really do.

Nigel Farage brings absolutely nothing to this country. Last week he wasn’t even bothered enough to stand because he was going to help Trump, but since his conviction he’s changed his mind. Apparently it’s ok for Farage to change his mind, but not ok for the electorate to change their’s about Brexit which was sold to them on a whopping great lie and sent the country to hell in a handcart.

Apparently according to someone up thread he appeals to the working classes because they just want an NHS dentist, a doctor’s appointment and a few beers down the pub. Well don’t vote for Farage then, because he doesn’t believe in the NHS, he hasn’t for many, many years and repeats his stance on it time and time again.

He’s a nasty, lying racist who tries to put fear into people. He says a lot of words, but not a lot of sense comes out. He promised to leave the country if Brexit failed so I really don’t understand why he’s still here. Well, I do, it was just another one of his lies.

And on top of this he has to buy his way into any position because he can't actually manage to get voted in.

How did he become leader of Reform? Oh yes, by owning 53pc of this private company which isn't a democratic political party

Going back to your quote...

Diane Abbots constituents think she's brilliant. Hence her threat of standing as an Independent and them wanting her to.

I guess that you don't really get it, do you?

...They have a point though.

You essentially wished you would have been able to secretly kill a politician you don't like.

It's a repulsive thing to do or joke about, given that some politicians have lost their lives due to this in the past.

That you think that is ok to say that, just because it is a politician you don't like, says more about you than the posters calling you out on it.

🤣 Okay.

And your other point is?
Oh nothing.

Name the crash, the year and tell me which constituency he was an MP for. I can't recollect one at the time.
